John Terry classy

My thoughts for the evening are Elliot can be a first team regular if he keeps his head down and puts the work in that will be required of him.

Apart from that the rest didn't really stand out as anything special. Hoever, Berg and Kane looked ok and the rest of the team coped admirably with the demands of a quarter final.

Chirivella is going to have to leave, at 22 he doesn't fit into the central midfield that Klopp deploys and he won't be getting first team squad opportunities with the current options at the managers disposal. He wasn't bad tonight but I think he lacks the physicality to thrive under Klopp.

Did you see the Cruyff turn Hoever did in his own penalty area?

Kane was the odd one out for me, but still did decent. I think they had a look of a team, which is better for us than having 4-5 players only standing out. Shows the system we play is all the way through.

My concern for Hoever is that he is never going to replace Alexander Arnold on the right, so unless Alexander Arnold is redeployed as a central midfielder Hoever will be looking at central defence only and he'll need time and patience to gain experience playing in that position at the elite level.

It's a nice problem to have.

Minamino having his medical today in preparation for a January 1st move. That is an excellent signing, for the cost he is basically a free hit and should be able to deputise for Mane or Salah, maybe playing in the three behind a central Salah, which Klopp seems to use more frequently now.

I'm much more comfortable with the club's transfer dealings as they are now compared with the recent past.

Yeah, is a very shrewd signing. Allows us to rest and rotate more in the front three and give Salah and Mane much needed time off. He also gets time to get used to the league being used sparingly and start to provide much needed continuity between the real young players (Elliot) and those who will come to their end of their best years (Salah), within the next 3-5 years.

I fully expect to see a similar signing at some point for other positions (LB being one) as we build the squad up to last.

We've got the core now and just need to build around it. We have shown we can not only do the marquee signing (Alisson, Van Dijk) but can pick up the players who aren't instantly seen as world class options (Salah, Firmino, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Robertson) but do become vital to the team.

We have an identity again and we are getting players who fit that. We aren't buying potential talent (Le Tallec, Cheyrou, etc) who fail to take the next step. Instead we buy those with the right ethic first and create a unit that works. Then their talent comes through.

That was seen in spades with the performance last night with the kids. They played in the way I expect a Klopp team to play and whilst they were well beaten, there wasn't a single player our there that couldn't come in and fit into the first team when the time is right.

The future (as well as the present for once) looks so bright!

I'm making a point of not watching it due to it being in Qatar, but it looks like I'm not missing much. Are they actually playing that bad, or is it just one of those games where the heat is killing them?

It’s 19C, which is practically coat weather in the region

Ah, I had visions of them spontaneously combusting in 50° heat.

:)

Thankfully ‘winter’ is pretty clement. They’ve had rain too!

Relief not to have extra time I ‘spose. Strange game, felt like a mid-season friendly that just happened to be on TV.
