From the highlights lots of chances but very poor choices or finishing in the last third.

Coutinho going through a poor patch but Lallana looks lively & Can/Sakho both playing their socks off.

It's early days. An entirely new way of doing things. Work to be done - well obviously.

It's almost like we've started badly and just got a new manager in!

Is not an entirely new way of doing things though, is it? The team pressed high under Rodgers (at times at least) so that concept isn't like a radical change, like going from long-ball to a passing game.

Of course it's going to take time, there are a number of issues to resolve. But that doesn't mean you can't say something was poor. Last night was very poor finishing/choices in the final third. That's nothing to do with a new manager (who isn't being criticised anyway.)

That was a really interesting read, even if the penultimate paragraph distilled everything to "United had better players, durr!"

Hard to believe that was 20 years ago though. 20 years! What a different world that was...

kinell that is a bit tldr. I skimmed some.

This is not to say Redknapp would definitely have made it; we simply don’t know. But with a fairer wind and a different course of events, he might have become a top, top player.

Cheeky!

Still too painful. I was only a wee nipper back then and it was the likes of Rush and Fowler that attracted me to Liverpool as a kid. But how did we not win anything with that core group of players? It simply boils down to Fergie buying better players and getting more support from the board. Roy Evans had to scrape around and purchase the likes of Heggem and Sean Dundee, although whoever bought Collymore should have been shown the door.

20 years on and the same problems remain, managers not being fully supported with transfer targets and too much money being wasted on failed marquee signings.

What I'd give for a 20yr old Fowler in the current team...

Heggem was rated very highly before we got him, if I recall there were a number of top clubs after him (including United, I think). He had some bad injuries though which killed his career. The point is valid though, we bought poorly.

@Oh Danny Boy, Collymore was excellent playing for us, he was a twat (but I like him now on the radio) him and Fowler were amazing striker partnership and he scored plenty himself, he got sold purely because as I say he was a twat but great player for us

Collymore could've been the best English striker not called Alan Shearer but his attitude was awful. Technique, pace and power, what did he lack?

The most amazing thing though is we only lost £1.5m on him. Thank you, Villa.

I loved Collymore when he came to Liverpool and playing alongside a young Robbie Fowler. As you say he had power and pace and was even two footed, it's shame after 18 months it all fell apart.

He also spent (I think) about £7m on Babb and Scales in 1994 which was serious money at the time for a pair of centre-backs. £4.5m on McAteer, £3.5m on Berger and £8.5m on Collymore as well off the top of my head. I doubt Leonhardsen or Ince were cheap. I don't really think he had to scrape around at all.

And yeah, Collymore was pretty much unplayable when he first went to you. I saw Liverpool a fair bit around that time and it's not something you tend to hear with him but his crossing with either foot was fantastic, he could really whip them in and Fowler would generally be waiting. That season they scored 50-odd between them you couldn't stop them.

I think the main thing that held you back was not having any steel in midfield (obviously Ince was supposed to address that but I think it was a year or two too late for that team really). An upgrade on Bjornebye probably would've helped too.

Yeah Collymore is one of the best England strikers of all time potential wise (as in natural ability etc if he hadn't been a bit of a twat). Back then we reminded me a bit of Spurs or something, we didn't have that extra mile to take us over the edge, Evans is no Fergie and as mentioned Utd had a better squad.

Collymore was such a huge talent, he had the sweetest of feet and could do whatever he wanted with the ball and for a short while his partnership with Fowler was pure joy to watch. But he's not the first, nor the last, player who has problems because he won't move to where his new club is based and, as Fowler commented, that created some initial divisions within the squad. Has Collymore ever said why he didn't move? Did he move when he went to Villa?

I think Chelsea's struggles this season has increased the pressure on both Liverpool and Southampton tomorrow. Chelsea are still the bookies favourite for fourth but I think the points total needed to secure has probably dropped from 72+ to mid to high 60s. The race for fourth has been opened up to a handful of teams who probably didn't really think it was an achievable goal this season and Southampton and Liverpool are in that group.
