Very happy with Milner signing, now on to buying a proven quality goalscorer.

Oh and although Gerrard took all the limelight in the last few games because he was leaving, and rightly so, but I'd like to mention that I've never been a big fan of Glen Johnson but over the last 6 years he's provided us with some excellent attacking play down the right and left so good luck to him in the future!

Happy with the Milner signing. He can be the new Dirk Kuyt.

I hope we don't lose Skrtel.

I was disappointed that we didn't play him in the last couple of games to give him a send off, was he injured? Or Can really seen as a better option?

GlenJo has been a frustrating player but I've always quite liked him.

In Skrtel's time at Liverpool it's rare we've ever looked solid at the back when he's in the team. He's undoubtedly our best defender but that's not saying much.

He's had a couple of patches of poorer form but I'd say that our lack of solidity has rarely been down to him but rather either his partner or our general setup. Also I don't think we have anywhere near enough players in the team with his level of determination (though at least we've just added another one in Milner).

I completely disagree (surprise, surprise!) with the rest of you. I think Sakho is our best defender by a stretch and I don't think it makes sense to renew Skrtel's contract at his age and ability level. I'd be looking to phase Lovren in at RCB properly this season (nope; still haven't written him off), and let Skrtel act as cover until his contract's up.

I agree with that. Although if we can get money for him and sign an experienced replacement, I'd do that. Toure will only be here for another season, and Sakho and Lovren will need that guidance.

This is Lovren who has looked even worse at RCB than his preferred LCB?

I'd love him to prove me wrong but the idea of him playing alongside Sakho scares me.

What's made no sense to me is renewing Toures contract.

Toure is a veteran player who is important to the squad. He will be fourth choice at the very most but he can help youngsters and also be an important voice within the changing room, maybe even be a leader.

Yeah. He needs an extended run there and we need to manage the space in front of both CBs better. I think half his problem is he's a front-foot defender playing with no protection. His instinct is to step out and try to stop the threat head-on, and because our midfield is nowhere to be seen defensively, he's left exposed and makes rash decisions. Skrtel, however, just drops off towards his own goal and tries to get a block in eventually. It's a bit like the way Shay Given stole a living as a 'top keeper' for years by staying devotedly attached to his line, whereas Reina got a reputation for making mistakes because he'd fly out to sweep up behind his defence. For a possession-based style of play, with a high line, I think Lovren has the better attributes.

I'm not expecting to be proved right on this one. I think it's much more likely that Brendan will completely ignore the problems in midfield in terms of tactical adjustments and will instead try to address the issues through team selection. So two from Milner, Henderson and Can going box-to-box, behind one of Coutinho or Lallana (with the other foisted in on the wing), or some other dopey idea.

Sorry, my point was that it was fairly obvious our defence needed recruitment this year, which to me meant that we'd need to shift out some players that don't play much to bring in new. As I expected Skrtel (highly experienced), Lovren, Sakho to stay, I thought Toure would go. As he has now been given a new contract, it looks as though there is no chance that in central defence anything will be changing.

I think he just makes rash decisions with no thought of the consequences. That's not right about Skrtel either IMO, the amount of times I've screamed at the TV for him not to go in too early and just hold of a little is unreal. The thing with him though, is he can do both and over the years his judgement has got better. At the moment, Lovren looks like he has no ability to handle a player that runs at him, doesn't know when to drop off or attack the ball and generally doesn't look like a £20m defender. 2 maybe 3 games last season I thought, yeah Lovren did pretty well that game, but in comparison time and time again I thought, thank fuck we have Skrtel in the team.

Colin Pascoe has also left. Hopefully we'll bring in some experienced coaches now.

Apparently Rodgers has more of a say in transfers now, which worries me...

Where is that being reported? Haven't seen anything yet on the usual places.

edit : Just did a quick search and it is being widely reported. Surprised Rodgers has actually agreed to his number two being sacked, I wonder who they are going to get in his place. Surely they have someone in mind.

Apparently, he recognises that the coaching wasn't up to the standard required - although why have they been there for 3 years then...

Still unsure about Achterberg too, but it sounds like he's staying.
