Poor game in terms of chances created, Can was very shaky at the back and made at least 3 bad mistakes, Sturridge too selfish in good positions, very quiet crowd.

Ibe was excellent throughout, Balotelli took a great penalty and ran around a bit when he came on and actually looked ok, Sakho was assured and solid.

As for the penalty, it's easy to see both sides of the argument. I thought Rod Stewart Gordon Strachan (it's the ridiculous beard) was going to lamp Reid, which was the best bit of punditry ITV have ever screened. How come Townsend was commentating? I thought his contract had been terminated immediately? Anyway, Henderson should have been stronger, though he's right that of those on the pitch, I'm not sure anybody has more pressure penalty experience than Balotelli. And Stevie was right, it never looks great to see the team having a little tiff on the pitch.

That said, I agree with Reid that I'm not sure it was necessarily done to disrespect Hendo, but he just felt supremely confident in the moment. Thankfully he scored so it doesn't become a bigger issue than it needs to be.

So, an advantage in the tie and another clean sheet. Roll on Southampton!

Glad we got the one goal lead, did not have that many clear cut chances maybe Lallana could have done better with his or if Hendo's free kick just crept in.

Balotelli played well when he came on & Ibe was great (another promising youngster).

Sturridge missed the decisive penalty in the Olympics that saw GB eliminated, so out of the few he has taken over the last few years he's not got a good track record. Whereas Balotelli has only ever missed 1 in the last 30 or so he's taken.

To be fair to Sturridge, it looked as if he was standing up for Henderson's right to take the penalty, not arguing for himself. Having said that, Balotelli is the best penalty taker (aside from Gerrard) in our squad so the right decision was made. I agree about the Strachan and Reid exchange - Gerrard was just sat smiling to himself throughout the whole thing. I'm not sure I like the idea of him being in the pundit box whilst still a key player and club captain though. He handled the discussion of Henderson and Balotelli pretty well but it just seemed as if him being there was asking for some kind of stirring from the media side. Anyway, a good result and here's hoping Sturridge and Balotelli can make up before the next game.

Southampton should have had at least one penalty. (The second one; think he went down too easily for the first personally.)

Yep, definite penalty for the second, Allen was nowhere near the ball (as usual...wink), self-inflicted though with Skrtel and Can both going for the same ball and leaving a massive gap in the middle. Terrible defending.

Great strike from Phil though, lovely control over the ball. Already this feels like it's going to be a tense 90 minutes!

Sheesh, our defending has been absolutely shocking today. I don't think it's a complete coincidence that it comes with Lovren's return.

Southampton should easily have had a penalty - the handball and the hip-to-hip challenges weren't legitimate in my opinion. Don't think ours was a penalty either, but some refs would give it I'm sure. Outside of Coutinho's shot we've created pretty much nothing and look far too easy to get through the middle of. The front 3 haven't clicked at all today.

Ibe has been great again though, to me he's Sterling with better dribbling and real strength on the ball. It'll be exciting to see him develop further.
