Hopefully Rodgers will drop Gerrard more often now, no need to keep him happy at the expense of the team. Pushing Henderson out of position to play Gerrard really hurt us today.

I wonder if he's looking for a last big pay check in the USA or a move to a Chelsea/City. I can see him doing well at either of the latter, they'll play him in the right position and sparingly. I think he has too much influence at the club to ever be able to willingly take a step back and become a bit part player without hurting his ego. This decision is probably best for both player and club.

This first part is spot on- plus- Gerrard should have been subbed instead of Lucas- the last 10 minutes he was trying to do everything to get the win and while the head and heart are there his legs just aren't anymore unfortunately.

Liverpool Football Club can confirm Steven Gerrard is to leave the club at the end of the 2014-15 season.

The Reds captain will bring the curtain down on a glittering Anfield career that has spanned nearly 17 years and included 10 trophies, as well as 695 appearances and 180 goals to date since joining the club's youth system aged eight.

Gerrard will not retire from professional football at the conclusion of the 2014-15 season. No decision on his new club has been made yet, but he will continue his career outside the United Kingdom and at a side that will not bring him into direct competition with Liverpool.

The 34-year-old admits it is with a heavy heart he will depart Liverpool, describing the decision as the 'toughest of his life', but has chosen to make it now to avoid speculation about his future.

Until then, the No.8 insists he will continue to concentrate all his efforts on helping Brendan Rodgers' side achieve both domestic and European success.

Explaining his decision, Gerrard said: "This has been the toughest decision of my life and one which both me and my family have agonised over for a good deal of time.

"I am making the announcement now so that the manager and the team are not distracted by stories or speculation about my future.

"Liverpool Football Club has been such a huge part of all our lives for so long and saying goodbye is going to be difficult, but I feel it's something that's in the best interests of all involved, including my family and the club itself.

"I'm going to carry on playing and although I can't confirm at this stage where that will be, I can say it will be somewhere that means I won't be playing for a competing club and will not therefore be lining up against Liverpool - that is something I could never contemplate.

"My decision is completely based on my wish to experience something different in my career and life and I also want to make sure that I have no regrets when my playing career is eventually over.

"I can't thank Brendan, the owners and everyone at the club enough for how they've handled this and I am leaving on great terms. Also, I would like to thank my teammates and all the staff for their help and continued support.

"It is a very special place to be part of. It is my sincere hope and wish that one day I can return to serve Liverpool again, in whatever capacity best helps the club.

"One point that is important to make is that from now until the last kick of the last game of the season, I will be as fully committed to the team as I ever have been and giving everything I have to help Liverpool win games.

"My final message is for the people who make Liverpool Football Club the greatest in the world - the supporters.

"It has been a privilege to represent you, as a player and as captain. I have cherished every second of it and it is my sincere wish to finish this season and my Liverpool career on a high."

Sticking Gerrard into the back three would be a big mistake, even at the peak of his powers he never possessed the tactical nous or perhaps self control to play in a role that demanded positional awareness.

He played best for the club under Benitez in that roaming role behind the striker. I even recall Benitez publicly calling Gerrard out on it.

It's also the reason the defensive midfield role doesn't work for him.

It's about the right time and it makes it a much easier job for Rodgers to move the team on.

That's been said about so many Liverpool players over the years. We've been lucky.

One club players will become rarer due to player power though. It's fairly easy to imagine Rooney still being at Everton if he'd started in 1992 rather than 2002.

I'm gutted. It's not going to feel right seeing him playing for another team. I think the team could be better off without him but not the squad overall. They'll miss the experience from him and he'd be great to have available on the bench.

If he signs for a US team then at least loan him back to us during their off season.

On a side note isn't he pumping Caroline Wozniacki? Blates the real reason he wants to get away.

So I imagine we have to be buying a striker and at least one defender this January?

If Gerrard isn't being used much who exactly is his replacement - I'd say we need to get them in now.

Origi will be coming to us early I expect & if Borini is sold then I'd expect we might be in for Berahino or Bony.

We do need a keeper & agree an experienced CB, Vlaar from Villa?

We've been linked with Shaqri again, not sure if we need him to be honest unless he can fill our striker void also?

Then we should give them £25m. Never going to happen, well maybe the sale will but definitely not us stumping up the money to remain competitive.

I've now convinced myself that Gerrard will play 90 minutes of every remaining cup game, not play any more league games, except maybe the last ten minutes in our last home game, and go on and do a Gary Mac and win us a cup treble.

Is Rodgers again just playing one proper striker up top? Is he on drugs. It doesn't work much.

I guess if it doesn't vs Wimbledon then it will against better opposition.

Or if it does work then it will work against better opposition.

Ah yes, he's a genius. He cannot lose!
