Its a combination of selling Suarez, Gerrard being marked out of games and injury to Sturridge.

When you then add disappointing signings and loss of form for most of the team, its no wonder that our rubbish defense is breached every week.

Perhaps playing United at the weekend isn't the worst thing, because it might give the players the motivation they need to pick themselves up.

I went to the game last night, first time in forever. I noticed:

-Hendo and Sterling ran like bastards, really showed some determination. Was a shame for Henderson to not reap anything, he deserves better.

-Gerrard really looked like he couldn't do it for most of the game, and some of his misplaced passes were just bizarre.

-I don't think Lovren had the worst game ever.

-Seeing Mignolet do the same abject goal kicks a few feet away (pass it to a player to the side who has no option but to pass it back) elicits deserved moans from nearly everyone. It's bizarre. I reckon he's short-sighted or something. He did do that decent save late on, so I'll give him that.

-Dead angry at the red card, though maybe it's because it seems to happen all the time at my five-a-side games, which aren't tempestuous. It looked to me like Markovic and other player were tussling, Markovic anticipated the other player to be moving with him and he threw an arm out to keep him at length, but clearly didn't realise he'd already stopped moving. I guess I need to see it again.

Fuck!

Gerrards regression is rapid and he should hang up his boots. No disrespect to him, he is for me probably our greatest ever player but he looks sorely out of place.

Kelthink, at least you got to see Gerrard's final Champion's League goal. Oh okay, we might qualify for next season, same as I might convince Emily Blunt shacking up with a freckly strawberry blonde bloke who likes Lego and cheeseburgers is in her future.

Anything other than a defeat at Old Trafford will be a very welcome surprise. They're not exactly the all-conquering United of old but we just look so flat. Flatter than a steamrollered pancake. Flatter than a dieting flatfish. Flatter than... oh whatever, we're fucking terrible.

Isn't watching Gerrard in situations like last night quite frustrating for you guys? Not only is not the player he once was (and bear in mind I was a fan, of sorts; I adored that FA Cup final against West Ham as a neutral, for instance, and he was an absolute beast in that game), but his insistence to try and play the hero increasingly looks detrimental to the team to me.

We were sat in the pub last night watching both the English teams play, and as soon as you needed the two goals and were down to ten men I told my friends to look for it, just as I had after the poor sod slipped against Chelsea last season; for the rest of the game, give him even quarter of a chance to shoot and he will absolutely take it. Sometimes it'll work, of course (and that was a cracking free kick last night, and I did start to wonder...), but as his powers continue to fade surely it becomes more and more of an issue. I don't know that I could see him relinquish the responsibility he's put upon himself to play that hero role while he's still at Liverpool, either.

Of course, I don't watch as much Liverpool as you all do though; am I being unfair?

That is true :) It was a special goal! Just...if only, eh? Henderson's shot near the end was a corker too.

I'm guessing you meant 'encapsulated' but capitulated is an amusing substitution.

Yeah that's what I meant.

Either way he's been very poor. Maybe that's because everyone was expecting him to be our main man and potentially a new talisman and he just can't handle it yet.

I understand what you are saying but yes I think you are being unfair. We didn't lose last night because Gerrard got desperate with his shooting, it's what we needed from other players such as Lambert or Sterling who failed to shoot when they should have, we lost because we have absolutely fuck all upfront. Our defence has looked much better recently, but without a decent strike force and attacking midfield we'll continue to win 1-0 or draw 0-0 against less opponents but fail to beat anyone with any reasonable amount of potency in attack or decent organised defences.

Torres' decline has been quite painful and drawn-out.

Still, the guy scored the winner in the European Championships, has a World Cup winner's medal, domestic European medals, FA Cup...he's done alright in that respect.

Can't see him coming-back to us, nor getting any better support than Lambert/Borini or Balotelli have if he did. Pure paper-talk.

Yeah, I'm dreaming. Imagine we got him back on a free transfer and he instantly returned to the former glorious goalscoring beautiful bastard he once was. Bringing the best back out of Gerrard (and vice versa) as we go on a winning streak that lifts us to the top of the table and winning the league. Just like every career mode I play in FIFA.

Is less likely than this:

Heskey returned to the club. He was playing CB partnering Kolo.

We're not even going to talk about the shit I crossed out up there.
