As critical as I was about the selection... That was a very good European away performance in all fairness and hopefully a few players have shown they can get an extended run in the team.

I actually think Gerrard should have been left on the bench. Coutinho on for Lucas, then bring on Ballotelli to play up with Borini as the third sub, but overall that wasn't too bad and a bit of pride restored.

Well that went better than expected. Shame we couldn't get anything from the game but it was a respectable defeat. Highlights from the game:

- Mig mugging off Ronaldo and Benzema

- Lucas pushing the Madrid wall during Borini's free kick (and his cheeky smile afterwards)

- Moreno taking out Bale with that tactical foul

- Kolo nearly chipping Mignolet then high-fiving Skrtel afterwards

Allen is completely out of his depth. He was the player who frustrated me most tonight.

The rest of the starting line up comes out of the game with a positive experience I think. Markovic is clearly lacking confidence and he needs more time to get used to the club and the change, but I think he will be a good player.

Toure was excellent and Lucas rolled back the years and looked excellent in the role he was asked play to in.

Shame they had no conviction to try earlier in the game who they broke because they could have troubled Real Madrid a lot more.

I think maybe he was saving Can for the weekend against Chelsea. I'd go with a Henderson, Gerrard and Lucas midfield 3, even though Gerrard has been poor for the last few weeks he still has the quality that will be required against Chelsea on Saturday.

Sterling, Borini and Markovic front 3, the pace and mobility of a front three like that could make a few problems for the Chelsea defence.

Having said all that though Coutinho needs to start, don't know where he would fit in though.

Well there's no denying that was a much more solid performance from front to back, though it came at the cost of being completely non-existent up front. Plus we still lost, so that's still a downer.

I think Can could be a very good player, I like the way he goes about things. Markovic at least tried to run with the ball tonight, which was good, and Skrtel looked better with Toure beside him than he has with Lovren. Thought Ronaldo was contained pretty well throughout. Mignolet - distribution aside, which was about as good as it usually is - was fairly solid too.

Still concerned about the lack of punch up front though, it's all very well being solid defensively but we still didn't keep a clean sheet, nor did we break with pace or purpose. At the moment it's hard to see goals coming whatever 11 Rodgers' puts out.

Anyway, how close to a return is Sturridge now?

I'm a bit confused as to where Sterling is playing and how. The last few times I've seen him he is no longer the outlay down the wings or playing in behind the strikers, he seems to have turned into a Rooney, picking the ball up from very deep and either trying to take on the whole team or passing it sideways and then making little effort to provide space.

Has he been asked to do this? Is he doing it because he thinks he is the only decent player on the pitch? Or maybe he is lacking confidence in some way. It's just worrying to see this guy not receiving the ball where he would be most dangerous.

I thought the boys in general last night gave a good account of themselves, and if we don't see many of them playing Saturday it would be a great shame. As Gabe said though, we are somewhat lacking up front.

Man City lose at home to CSKA and have 2 players sent off.

Arsenal lose their 3-0 lead

Chelsea scrape a draw against Maribor

Makes the Liverpool reserves 1-0 loss to the best team in Europe the best result from the UK teams in my book...

Ignoring the fact Chelsea and Arsenal still get points from their results

I'd rather see Touré and Lovren together, I have some confidence in Lovren coming good with a decent partner. Question is, can Touré be realistically relied upon to be decent.

I suppose he can't be much worse than the crap we've watched this season.

I'd like to see a similar team (to Tuesday) go up against Chelsea to be honest. I wanna see what a midfield with Can, Henderson and Coutinho can do, feeding Markovic, Sterling and Borini. Snow joke! I think Gerrard's lack of mobility stifles us to be honest. Cracking accuracy and vision, but yeah.

The position he has played can clearly be effective when the team performs like it did last season.

The problem this year is the complete lack of effective pressing throughout the team. That will inevitably cause the holding midfielder lots of problems.

It all starts from the top, the strikers don't press and then it all falls apart. Balotelli is a square peg in a round hole, that is exacerbated by the lack of Sturridge.

I think as part of a pair Balotelli would be much better at pressing his part of the pitch, because he wouldn't be covering the entire width. I was pleasantly surprised by his work ethic against Newcastle

Sorry for 2 replies at once but this deserves its own post.

I'm happy for most of Tuesdays team to play against Chelsea but there should be no place for Joe Allen, he was terrible against Real. Probably just about the only negative performance of the match.

He works like a dog but he just doesn't seem to have the quality, at least I've not seen it.
