I knew we would get pumped, but I hoped it could have been a respectable pumping. The goals we're conceding is just embarrassing, shambolic defending all around.

Gary Neville figuratively sucking off Ronaldo after his goal was some awful commentary, try to hide the bias a bit at least.

I was being sarcastic.

Unfortunately.

Ah right, should have realised.

What a twat Mario !! Swapping shirts

Knew he wouldn't be on to do so in the 2nd half.

Why's Borini not in the squad? Would have preferred him playing tonight instead (or even alongside) Mario.

The only saving grace, then, would seem that Basel are only drawing currently so hopefully it will stay that way and we won't be too far off the pace. But given we won't get anything in Madrid either, things are looking dicey for qualifying for the knockout stages.

i wonder if he had a kick off with the manager and that was why he was taken off?

The problem with him is it'll probably be another on of those season loans and then sold for about 6m because nobody wants him

Balotelli and Lambert wont work because both aren't mobile enough. I think Balotelli could definitely look much better with a partner up top, but he needs to be mobile and able to get behind the opposition defence. In the current squad only Sturridge is capable of that at any consistently good level, Sterling could be another candidate for it and Borini if you're very desperate but he is simply not good enough.

Balotelli looked ok in the first half, in a team who were clearly not up to the standards of the opposition. He still made some stupid mistakes but I thought his initial starting position on the right actually worked because it meant he could drift into the box when Sterling was playing through the centre.

The reality is, though, he just simply isn't good enough and its clear he is a stop gap. Origi needs to hit the ground running next season and I think the main goal for this season is to get the bloody defence to actually defend. Confidence seems really low amongst the defenders but at the same time Johnson is finished, he seemingly cant even concentrate for a full 90 minutes during a massive Champions League game.

All well, theres always next season. Right?

I expected us to ship more than that.

The damming thing for me - the first goal. Gerarrd doesn't track Ronaldo. He just stops running outside the box and ball watches.

Lead by example.

I still feel we can get the best out of Balotelli if we start with two upfront. BR needs to start with Balotelli & Lambert.

He doesn't suit being the loan striker, saw it a few times tonight where he played the ball to where a strike partner should be, or was holding it waiting for someone.

His best performance was when he and Sturridge played against Spurs. Not sure if he and Lambert would work together - be interested to see. But surely its worth pairing him with Borini while Sturridge is out.

That's an incredibly big ask for a young kid who hasn't got a great deal of experience (nor has he set Ligue 1 alight). As we saw in the World Cup, he took up some good positions and was certainly mobile, but his finishing was not good. I'd be very surprised if he was to be a regular starter next season - assuming, that is, that he isn't sent elsewhere on loan.

I can't remember where I saw it, but the stats (and a few years of watching him) clearly show that Balotelli scores more goals and wins more points when he's played up front on his own rather than with a partner. I can't see him and Lambert working.

Simply, we have gone from Suarez and Sturridge last season to so far neither of them this. Thats 50 goals you have to replace, the most potent front line in the league last season. Any team would suffer that loss and currently Mario isn't filling that gap. Add the non improvement of our defence and it's not a surprise we aren't winning many games.

We were out classed last night by the Champions of Europe, it's no big surprise. I'd like to have seen last year's Liverpool against them though.

BR Press conference at the moment

On Balotelli-gate...
"Any action would be kept within ourselves.
"We've had a conversation. Case closed."
Rodgers confirms there's been no reaction from within the squad.
"It's a part of the game and you have to accept it.
"I think the boy is trying very, very hard and long-term we will see how that works out for him.
"He is working hard to improve to score goals and boost his chances.
"As long as he is doing his best, I can't ask for anymore.
"Whether that best is good enough long-term who knows. But that's the same for any player."

Sorry for wading in here, but I just wanted to tip my hat to Rodgers. He's obviously been studying how Ferguson, Dalglish and the old school guys speak to the press. Little things like calling Lallana 'Young Adam' and referring to players as 'the boy', he's trying to come off statesman-like. I quite like the guy.

Edit - having said that, it's also the kind of talk Harry Redknapp is known for...
