Yes/no. People will say "Look at Lucas/Henderson we called him useless, what were we thinking" and then minutes later say "Sakho/Downing was always going to be awful you could tell, especially for £18m/£20m. I told you so!"

That's football and opinions for you.

The real difference is that last season we always had that Suarez element. And because with him we felt anything was possible. Early on, even when we weren't playing our best, there was always hope. There was a belief among some we could win the title. And we could have.

We simply do not have that now and to my mind it also reverberates around the players too. They don't believe anymore. And why would you? Your best player is gone. Because the club aren't good enough for him.

It's a harsh line. It's also true.

We were shit aswell with Suarez for a good 2 years

I do think that last season could well be the best season Suarez ever has in his career (obviously scoring 40-odd goals in a season in Dutch football was impressive, but I don't think too many would claim it is at the standard or the Premier League). I think that's due to a number of factors, not least Gerrard having a great season, him linking well with Sturridge, Sterling becoming a real threat, Henderson stepping-up and possibly most importantly, he found his shooting boots. Last season everything he hit went in, when prior to that his shooting was much more erratic/wayward and he made poorer decisions.

Anyway, it's been said in here before (not least by me) but defensively we're no better than 2/3/4 years ago and no longer look like outscoring the opposition. I think we have a squad with some good players, some potential stars and some guys only above-average that should be replaced. Certainly on paper I don't think you'd say it was a top-4 squad when you look those around us - Man U may also be pretty shocking defensively, but with their attack you'd pretty much guarantee they'll outscore us over the season; City and Chelsea are miles ahead of us and Arsenal look more solid overall; once (if?) their attack clicks you'd expect them to score quite freely too.

I don't say that because I'm being overly-negative, more that I'm realistic about where we are. As much as I hate Rodgers saying we're in transition by way of excuse/tempering expectations (as he did again the other day, despite saying we should be viewed as contenders at the start of the season), if I sit and look at it in the cold light of day he's right.

Not only the belief of Suarez as a team mate but the fear factor of him as a opponent is gone. It's a double blow.

He was exceptional. You just can't replace it.

We could have got Torres back! ;)

So, thoughts on the game against the mighty QPR?

I'm anticipating a win, but we'll make hard work of it. Maybe Mario might actually score, who knows. I'm sadly not expecting any kind of spectacle, given the way we've been playing this season.

This is horrendous. Really, really dire. We haven't had 2 minutes sustained possession all game. The Madrid match is going to be horrible.

Nah. We'll lose to QPR and beat Real Madrid (albeit a result that will have little-to-no long-term consequence). It's the Liverpool way.

I'd take Balotelli off for Coutinho. Play him as a false 9 with Lallana and Sterling ahead. Get Gerrard in between Can and Henderson to take a grip on things.

This has been an absolute shambles though. It's as inept a performance as you could ever imagine.
