How did Toure not get sent off there anyway? Him being suspended would at least be one positive to come out of the game.

What?! He looked our most composed defender and better than the other muppets have looked all season. Kolo The Klown is what we call him, but tonight, he looked great.

Mignolet is terrible when facing penalties, especially when you had years of Reina

And the joke is he was meant to be a penalty stopper! Rodgers has fucked up and should have swallowed his pride about Reina.

It certainly wasn't his worst game, and he put in one great blocking tackle, but the challenge for the penalty was comically misjudged. Even after Sterling's clanger and with too many players upfield, the situation was totally recoverable.

But more generally he was a complete liability last season. It's a shame because he seemed an astute signing and started well but even with the mistakes our other defenders have been liberally sprinkling around I'd rather he wasn't in the team.

No no no, forget about last season, cause I certainly wrote him off as never playing this season, he was good tonight, Sterling fucked up, it wasn't his fault. Sakho, Lovren and Skrtel have all looked worse.

No, it was shit by Sterling, full stop!

Yeah it was a bad pass, i'm not saying it wasn't, but i'm pretty sure it wasn't deliberate. Whereas the fullbacks and midfielders decision to be so far up the field in the 92nd minute definitely was.

We can't keep blaming bad passes and slips, we need to show bit more tactical discipline instead of being so gung-ho all the damn time.

Ok, I'll definitely judge him solely on last night's game, and ignore both his horrendous error then and also an entire preceding season full of them...

Anyway, it seems last night was the joint highest penalty shoot out in English history. Highest in either the League Cup or the FA Cup but equalled by a game in the Football League Trophy.

But you said him being suspended would be a positive, when he just played well in his first game of the season. Like I said, I'd rather he had gone in the summer but if it turns out he'll be useful for us, that's great we still have him. None of our centre backs have done enough to justify a permanent place as yet.

I was joking, obviously. (Well, not obviously enough judging by how appealing the red button seems to have been.) I don't really want the guy on the pitch but I'm hardly seriously going to wish suspension or injury on our own players.

That challenge would have been a red most of the time though.

last night was like one of those Football Manager penalty shootout that you think is stupid, I thought Kolo would miss and was convinced Sterling would miss twice! dissapointed with Mignolet, 14 penalties is what maybe 3 or 4 years worth of penalties against in the league and he only saved 1

It's easier, you get everyone taking one in penalties and like cricket the penalty taker usually gets worse, in normal games it's the best penalty taker every one

"In a shootout that no one cares about". I mean because it's the league cup so there's no pressure on the taker. No pressure on the taker means a better penalty.

It was a decent game, and we were lucky to eke through but it's hardly inspiring stuff from a performance POV is it. Lallana, Lucas and maybe Sterling were decent, the rest - hmm.

Been disappointed with what I've seen (which is everything, game-wise!) of Markovic and Balo.
