Villa have done a solid job, but the sad thing is that they haven't had to do any more than that. We have been atrocious, not one part of the team has clicked today. There was a lethargy and lack of ideas about how to break down a compact defence, something that we'll come up against a fair bit.

To be fair, we did the stuff we usually do just about as well as we do every other week, it just wasn't working. People at the game were questioning why seem to have a hoodoo over us at the minute, but it's no surprise really - they're perfectly suited to playing us. They're a big bunch of lads, and with players like Agbonlahor they can break extremely quickly. It's all well and good trying to keep possession and waiting for an opening, but Villa don't need to attack in numbers, which means those gaps just don't appear like they would against other teams.

The only way we were going to break through them was by playing more directly, but sadly by the time we figured that out, the game had gone. We didn't really see anyone try to take their man on until the second half either, so there wasn't even a chance of something special bailing us out.

There were a couple of positives to take away, however. Sakho, aside from his error that led to the corner for their goal, was absolutely immense. Lallana showed some good signs as well, particularly in the second half. It was a shame to see him subbed, but it was understandable given his lack of match fitness.

Wow, I only managed to watch MOTD and read reports but god we looked bad. Playing like that on Tuesday might get us a draw if we are lucky!

Shows how much we miss Sterling and Sturridge though, without them if Suarez was around it would have been a different scoreline but Mario needs a bit more game time before we can rely on him to dig us out of a hole.

The Lovren and Sakho partnership, how do people think that is working out at the moment?

We were very bad. About 12,000 passes, yet never threatening. Lallana looked decent and started the second half brightly and with purpose, so it was a shame he was off after an hour, though no doubt due to building-up fitness. Sterling looked bright for 10 minutes or so but then seemed to be dragged down by those around him and fizzled out. Balotelli never got going. Markovic huffed and puffed without either a product or target to aim at and Phil has looked a bit off the pace all season so far.

From the bench, did Borini even touch the ball? Lambert didn't have any service at all to do anything, and he's not really going to be dropping deep and doing amazing things, that isn't his forte. Gerrard and Henderson seemed to both drop very deep in order to accommodate Phil, Markoviz, Lallana and Balotelli, but it curtailed Henderson's runs forward a bit too much and left Gerrard pinging long balls forward (some came off, some didn't) even more than normal.

Defensively we looked pretty open all the time and vulnerable to pace and at any ball into the box. Moreno got caught out a few times where he slid in and missed the ball completely, Manquillo was caught upfield a bit too much - but they are both very young and I think have potential. I don't know about Lovren and Sakho, though.

Sakho's style of play always looks jittery, even when he's doing ok. Lovren I thought was a bit sloppy positionally yesterday and neither of them really impose themselves when defending corners/free-kicks. We lack a Hyppia or even a Carragher - somebody who will organise those around them and show some authority. The problem - which wasn't just yesterday, it was also evident in all of our games, is that they haven't had anywhere near enough time to become a solid unit. It's a tough ask to have 4 defenders all try to gel when 3 of them have only been at the club a few weeks. It'll take a bit of time, the hope is that we don't suffer too many performances like yesterday whilst that happens, because I think it'll be easy to lose sight of the top-4 very quickly this season.
