I know we did a lot of our business early (which is good) and I know we've bought some players with potential but, Balotelli aside, does anybody else feel a little sad that we haven't made a marquee signing? Not even because we necessarily need one, but let's be honest, seeing the excitement around Falcao/Di Maria over the last few days (hours) has made me a little jealous...

Nope, not at all. I looked at our side on sunday, who comprehensively beat Spurs at home, looked at the bench with Coutinho, Lambert, Markovic and Can, then only this morning remembered we have Lallana to come back and thought how much of a better, well rounded and skillful squad we have this year.

Falcao is a panic buy, with the club playing way over for wages, Di Maria we don't need.

We've strengthened where we needed, with Moreno in particular and Balotelli is a marque signing and one that reinforces our already impressive side.

Also, Wellbeck to Arsenal, sounds as bad as Carroll to Liverpool with Torres going to Chelsea.

No way. It feels to me like we've built a hungry, young squad. Man Utd seem to have no blueprint, logic, or cohesive plan of what they are doing. We will make our stars, not throw insane money at players that may not even suit us.

Falcao's signing feels like an overreaction to the Fellaini signing this time last year and the flak that Woodward got for that. If you had put Falcao in the Man U side against Burnley, would he have done much better than RvP, Mata, Di Maria or Rooney did? If Man U fixed the supply line to the forwards (by sorting out their defence and midfield), then you might have seen more from their forwards on Saturday.

He's a quality signing, but not the signing they need right now.

Sorry, I phrased that badly. What I meant was the having the joy of a really exciting marquee signing in general - not that we needed one right now. Just to have that little thrill of buying a real massive world star (Balotelli is good, but not the calibre of the real top stars - yet.) It's been a while since we've gone into a window with the real potential of buying a big name.

As I said, we've done our business early and bought a number of players with potential, and that's all good, it's not a criticism of that approach at all.

I wish we'd signed another keeper. Jones doesn't provide any competition and I feel Mignolet has enough mistakes in him to cost us points this season.

I've been hearing about Valdes, which could be great, currently injured but could possibly be signed later on since he's not with any club.

United's desperation signings aren't something to admire. They just seem to be throwing bucket loads of shit at the wall and praying for something to stick. Falcao's wages are insane too. You can spend millions on attackers but if you can't create a chance against Burnley then maybe something else is going wrong.

If that's in relation to my post, it's not the point I was making. I'm not saying I wanted us to get Di Maria/Falcao/Welbeck (;)), just that I miss that feeling of thinking we might be signing a massive star. It's a nice little buzz to have on transfer deadline day, that's all.

The club already identified the positions which need strengthening, and brought in the players they needed. That the club aren't frantically rushing about in the final hours of the transfer window is testament to how the club is being run. These days its United who are running around making panic signings instead of us, that makes me happy :) . I'd say that the club has made big signings; Balotelli, Lallana and Markovic

Think Borini is being a bit of an arse personally. The QPR deal seems to have fallen through because of his absurd wage demands. (The Guardian actually phrased it as being him wanting a raise to move to London. Yeah, you poor fucking lamb, pretty hard to scrape by there on only £60k a week.)

Our system only requires one out and out striker and we have three others that will very obviously be preferred.

I dunno mate, if you'd signed for Liverpool would you want to go to QPR without a pay rise?!

I notice you say 'signed for Liverpool', not 'played' :)

I suspect / hope that I'd recognise that I'm paid absurdly well anyway and that perhaps I should go somewhere where I could play football rather than train occasionally and otherwise probably remain largely invisible. I don't even know what practical difference £90k/w vs £60k/w can make anyway. You can get a Veyron instead of a mere Ferrari?

Let's not go overboard; he did ok for Sunderland but hardly proved that he was the quality we need or that he warrants anything other than fourth place in our current pecking order. If he's not happy with the selection of clubs that are in for him then maybe he contemplate the reason for that.

Burnley was abject, no doubt, but what the media haven't really been giving credence to is the fact we have had 10 injuries and new players yet to make their debut.

With a full quota at our disposal in a 4-3-3 our team "looks" a potentially strong side.

De Gea

Rafael

Jones

Rojo

Shaw

Blind

Herrera

Rooney/Mata

Di Maria

Falcao

Januzaj/Rooney

Aside from Fellaini last season, I'm struggling to see the panic buys? We've bought two defenders, two midfielders/three if you count Di Maria and an attacker. All roles we needed to fill and improve on. Yes, we still need strengthening in defensive and midfield areas, but what's the point when we have no CL this season? Fletcher isn't of the required level anymore sadly and that showed on Saturday, he can't do that role on his own. We've Carrick to come back as well.

I think the Falcao transfer happened because neither Real or City were in a position to get him/didn't want him, so Mendes offered him up to us. With RVP due for an op, it makes sense especially when we've lost Welbeck and Hernandez too.

Wrong thread?? :-P

It is a bit strange with Borini for Liverpool to twice accept decent bids for him only for him to cling on and fight for a place on the bench. I can see him being used in domestic cups and scoring a couple of big goals at important times though, which is what he did at Sunderland.
