It's 3 points we didn't get last season, but need to get sharp quick and probably start Moreno next week over Johnson, and Can over Lucas.

Lucas looked at fault for the equaliser to me when he didn't track his man.

Think this will be a season for watching games with no sound if the commentators' rhetoric whenever we're not 9-0 up continues to be, 'Oh, well, they're missing Suarez'.

Good win, not a good performance. At least the next game is a banker. Oh.

Can for Lucas & Lallana for Coutinho next game & we will be better.

Sturridge plays better when someone is up there with him pulling a defender away.

Everyone has had a shaky start glad we got the three points. Bring on City.

Will be surprised if he starts the next prem game.

Relieved with the three points. Can't really look into the performance too much I guess. Lots of new players to bed in.

What, all both of them? I can put some of the defensive stuff down to a new CB and LB, but that doesn't excuse the rest of the team, who were by and large poor.

I think Brendan got the selection and shape wrong today. There's no point in Lucas at all any more. Did he even make a tackle today? Same goes for Johnson. The positive is there are players waiting to take their places.

It's going to be interesting to see how he'll fit the new guys in. Hopefully it doesn't take him to long to work it out.

Lucas is such a shame, he hasn't recovered sufficiently from the knee problem but he maybe could do given a run of matches. Its highly likely it wont be for Liverpool though, the club have younger players who suit the system much more.

Henderson is continuing his development into a very good asset for the team. Is Lallana fit for next week? I thought he was out for a little bit longer.

I would also stick Allen in the Lucas club, simply not good enough.

Not good enough to be first choice maybe but he's at least a bit more mobile.

I do think that a defensive mid of the quality of peak Lucas or Masch would really push us on, and may well be essential in the CL where we're never going to be able to outscore the frequency of defensive lapses we saw last season. The question is:

Can Can be that man?

Sorry.

The thing is - and I didn't hear any post-match talk - I assume the point they are making about missing Suarez is due to how he would pull players out of position/go on dribbles and cause havoc/generally link the play between our midfield and attack. Sturridge was largely isolated, Coutinho was quite comfortably frozen out and only Sterling had any joy in brief moments. There was quite a lot of space between the midfield and attack and, like Dogsout says, the shape was wrong.

Wonder what team will start the City match?

I think Lucas has been unlucky in that not only has he had to come back from injury, he's had to come into a side where Gerrard's pinched his position. For what it's worth, I thought Gerrard looked poor today as well, because we tried to play both as defensive mids neither of them were able to slot in between the centre backs properly and play as a proper centre half, which is no doubt what both would have preferred today. Lucas will be fine, and it's essential we keep him about for when the fixtures ramp up.

Obviously, it wasn't a perfect performance today, but for an opener it was satisfying to get the points on the board. We still have players to come back from injury, and when we get to play a proper left back we'll be a lot more solid. Lovren impressed on his debut as well, hopefully we'll see him line up with Sakho before too long as I think they could be a top pairing for years to come.

Only had half an eye on the game in the 2nd half but it looked like Southampton broke onto the back four with alarming regularity - dunno if Lucas was still on the pitch at the time offering any protection or if he just hasn't got the legs anymore. It's probably not a great indicator of how much better the defence might be if they're being attacked continuously with no cover from midfield.

Also noticed Johnson sell himself completely on one occassion so badly that I'm really questioning whether he should be a professional footballer or not, and so should he.

Rumours of Southampton's demise appear premature.

And that would be fine if that was what was said, because it at least offers an insight in to why we might miss Suarez. But all was said, on BeIn Sport's comms at least, was the inane, base level observation.

Guess I'm whinging about punditry really, which is about as useful as pissing into the wind and complaining about wet trousers.

Balotelli then? Not sure what I think at the moment if it is actually being considered but if he's going to work anywhere it'd be under Brendan and Dr Peters I guess.

dunno, it didn't work with Mancini who knew him at 2 clubs, Mourinho didnt like him either, he's a good player though and you'd think he's at an age now to start getting his act together so maybe worth a gamble?

Scored 30 goals in 54 games for AC Milan

I'd have him, he's a quality striker which is difficult to bring in, he could be world class if he matured a bit. I do have faith that if anyone can do that it would be Rodgers. I do foresee many face palms in the process however. Now that Suarez has gone we are one maverick short, this could fix that.

I can see him clashing with Sturridge personality-wise. Best case scenerio would be they get competitive, but not sure about them working together really. The club likes some drama it seems, just when you think it's getting all sensible and Hendo is becoming the personality of the club.

Why would he clash with Sturridge?

Just a worry about big personalities and don't feel either would ever be happy to be no.2 and support each other. Would be happy to be wrong and £17m or so if good value for him if for some reason we can still get £14m for Borini.

Suarez and Sturridge never really clashed so I don't think there is much in the idea Balotelli would make much of a difference in that regard.

I'm not entirely convinced by him but he is definitely good value considering the recent sales strikers.
