Yeah, shame about Kelly. When he first got a proper run in the team he looked good, plus he could play CB (which I'm sure I read was his favoured position) and I hoped he might become a long-term option there.

Hopefully he'll kick-on at Palace and stake a claim for a future England spot.

I feel really sorry for Kelly. His first days there and what a situation to walk into.

I've got an extremely good feeling about Moreno, he'll certainly make Enrique work for his place. It's going to make Good competition for Johnson as well at left back as Flanagan will push on in that position.

Looking for a positive start today. This season with Suarez gone we need Coutinho and Sterling to push on even more and Lallana and Markovic to hit the ground running and make us wonder how Suarez ever fit into the side. The squad is looking strong, we'll have players on the bench finally that can change a game and best of all, Champions League football is back!

With a bigger squad comes the challenge of keeping everyone happy. Wonder who BR is going to pick?

Assuming we go with the same 4231 formation like the Dortmund friendly then he might play the same eleven who started that match.

Not the best game ever, but at least some composure in the back

I think we've been pretty rubbish for most of the match, Southampton have been the better side by a distance. They've closed down well to nullify our attacking-threat (and Coutinho in particular), pressed in midfield and have had some joy down the flanks.

And damn, they should now be leading, too. Where were the defenders?!

So as soon as Lambert comes on, we are able to change it up and throw balls high into the box, cause some worry at the back for the opposition.

He won't get credited with an assist on that second goal, but his presence helped make it.

Important to get the win and get off to a good start, and yeah, it's first game of the season after a World Cup - but by god we were rough.

Lacked any real threat for most of the game, unable to cope with the pressing Southampton did, shaky at the back and Mignolet continues to always look nervous when a ball is thrown into the box. Lambert was left on the bench too long, he should have come on before Allen to give us a different approach. Southampton deserved a draw at least, they had the best chances, seemed to have time and space on the ball and were constantly threatening.

Still, 3 points. It's going to be a long season.
