The commentator during the game suggested it was because he "challenged" when Lloris had full control of the ball, which if accurate makes Friend sound like a total jobsworth.

There was no challenge at all, he was just running and Lloris's head made contact with Lukaku's thigh.

Man City fans I follow on Twitter reckon Zabaleta has been a bit poor this season. Would probably put Sagna or Clyne there.

Lovren instead of Koscielny. John Terry is probably in with a shout too to be fair.

If you're trying for balance then you can't have Toure and Ramsey holding because neither is playing that role this season. Toure has also done his usual thing of being pretty anonymous in certain games. Tempted to say Lallana in there maybe, with Ramsey. I know he's a bit of a comedy figure but in all seriousness from what I've seen Gareth Barry has been really good too (tbh though I've always rated him ever since he utterly destroyed Arsenal in I think 08/09).

Rooney > Sturridge is a bit contentious too if it's based on form this season.

I've gone for a mix of form and ability. I still can't help thinking that Sturridge is on a particularly hot streak that he'll never match again, although I've little evidence for this. Think you're right about Toure and Ramsey, one would need to be sacrificed for a more defensive player. I think Mertesacker/Koscielny compliment each other perfectly so I've picked them more as a pair, really.

Remove what? The only relatively high profile competition I know of that used a separate substitute goalkeeper was the MLS, and that ditched it about a decade ago. Unless you want to go back to just three subs on the bench? :)

Details, details. Let's just make this happen. I'm not going to let the minor issue of not knowing what the fuck I'm talking about be an obstacle here.

Sturridge got 8 goals in 12 games for Bolton in 2011 so he's gone on this kind of hot streak before to be fair. He's abit old fashioned but aslong as he stays fit and avoids major injury problems down the road I could see him being a 15-20 goal a season man for the forseeable future. He never got a chance for Chelsea up front really, iv'e rated him for years (intially regarding him as a much better prospect than Welbeck) and it's good to see him coming good for Liverpool

I think the guy just need consistent play time to prove what he could do, 21 in 25 for Liverpool now isn't it? That's stretching back to January and included the summer break... it's a decent streak.

As for your team, pretty good shout in most positions, i'd probably say Dawson is earning a place too.

Agree with the Fox. Stick Lovren in over Koscielny.

Not sure Sandro has played enough in the league yet to warrant inclusion. Flamini has probably had a bigger impact if you want a proper holding midfielder.

Also hasn't Baines been a bit underwhelming? I thought Coleman was the Everton wingback in form right now. I'd have Coleman over Zabaleta and then Vertonghen at left back (he'll just have to suck it up if he doesn't like it).

Coleman started the season with a few really good games, but since that hasn't really stood out much. He seems to be picking up a habit of putting in some stupid challenges in the area as well

Baines was outstanding up until the last month or so, but in his last few matches he's struggled a bit.

Gibbs has been consistently very good at left-back but then the team is starting to look very Arsenal-centric.

Mind you I guess we're one of only a few teams really exceeding expectations at the moment (3 of the top 4 assist providers are Arsenal players for instance) so maybe that's inevitable.

Funny that, considering it's being put together by a couple of Arsenal fans.

Gibbs has been ok, but done nothing to warrant inclusion in a team of the season so far. You'd have to be mad to include koscielny. He's given away two stupid penalties, and consistently looks like an own goal waiting to happen.

In the spirit of just picking players from our own teams, what about De Gea for keeper? Incidentally, my phone autocorrects De Gea to Dr Tea. I quite like that.

As a holding midfielder, Sandro is good but hasn't been consistent throughout. You could go for Gary Medel, who has been outstanding for Cardiff. His pass completion rate in the derby against Swansea was something like 95%, and his defensive work is excellent. He's a class act.

Medel is a good shout yeah, although if you think Koscielny is a red card waiting to happen...

Keeper is the hardest because Lloris, De Gea, Cech and Szczesny have all been pretty good, and I guess you need to give Boruc a shout out too with that goals conceded column.

Interested who you think has been a better LB than Gibbs this season. He's performed very well, very consistently.

No, no, an own goal waiting to happen. :)

He's not a particularly dirty player, not at all. At United we've got a few red cards waiting to happen ourselves, with Fellaini the prime example. Last night's red was the first of many, I suspect.

I think Baines or Vertonghen are decent shouts at left back. No-ones really stood out a mile.

Sorry for accusing you of being an Arsenal fan, Timmo!

By the way, what about a calamity XI? We'd have a few United players in that.

I'm not trying to stir up shit here, because I know Rangers fans are no angels, but hopefully this puts an end to all the sanctimonious 'Greatest Fans In The World' pish we've had to put up:

I remember Rangers fans rightly getting slaughtered in the Rllmuk football thread after Manchester. There was a bit where someone mentioned a bunch of neds booting fuck out of a car because it's alarm was going off, and being told nonsensically that, had it been Celtic fans, they would have started dancing to car alarm instead. I guess these cunts are just dancing and singing along to the police sirens then:

Deary me.

Is there really any other word to use but "cunts"? I think not.

I was in Prague a few years ago during a mini-riot by football fans. It was just down this one cobbled street, albeit in the centre of the city. Didn't last very long as the police stormed in with tear gas then battered anyone still standing with batons until they crumpled to the floor in a heap. No pissing about on that one.
