Football thread 2013/14 season

Lovely scenes at the end of Tahiti v Uruguay with the whole Tahitian squad and personnel draping themselves in Brazil flags and giving the crowd thanks for all the support. Despite their hammerings, I've enjoyed their games - any time they get the ball forward (which is a great deal more than Ireland have managed to do in some games I've watched) the crowd raise their voice, and Vahirua and Chong Hue both come out of the tournament with a good deal of credit.

And Jonathan Tehau, of course, as he's scored more goals than Edinson Cavani.

I'd gone out during half time to get some food, so hadn't realised that Poyet was on air with the BBC when Brighton released their statement. Incredibly childish behaviour. Hardly the right message to send out to their prospective new employees either.

25 years ago today. One of the first games I remember watching live on TV (I watched quite a lot of Euro 88 actually) but that goal from Van Basten still blows my mind. It's the second replay from behind the goals which shows just how incredibly brilliant it was. Has to be one of the best goals scored in a cup final ever, surely?

Man City will save a truck load of wages. Dunno who they'll buy, especially if Dzeko goes too.

I have a meeting at the Etihad tomorrow for work, so I'll tell them to stay clear of Higuain and to buy Bale instead. That'll do it.

Seems a bit harsh to make him wear a shirt they found in lost property, Maybe he should have gone with vest and pants.

We couldn't afford a new shirt after the lavish expenditure on tarting up the players' entrance. Still, Simon looks delighted to be there.

Tevez off to Juventus by the looks of it, 12 million seems quite cheap to me considering his goal and work rate.

The Guardian reported 9m up front then 1m a season for 3 seasons if Juve play in the Champions League and 1m for each season they win the league. Obviously better for City than losing him for free next year or having to give him a new contract. Fingers crossed this means Higuain is clear for Arsenal.

Not buying any those explanations. In fact, consider this a fall out. Maybe me getting so het-up about what is something Simon Mignolet thinks - and something I am largely ambivlaent towards - shows me to be getting too involved emotionally here.

How far a keepers allowed come off their lines at penalties? Caeser was a good one and a half metres forward there.

on the line until the ball is struck, isn't it?

[edit]

file under: I did not know that

The penalty kicker must not play the ball again until it has touched another player. (The kicker may play the ball a second time if the ball rebounds off the keeper, not if the ball rebounds directly off the goal frame without having touched another player.)
