Les Revenants / The Returned

You're all so weird, they clearly aren't going to do an information dump to tick off a load of questions at any point. The final shot was the payoff, and showed why the horde have been grouping up and moving out of the area, they knew it was coming. It's more Twin Peaks than Lost, there are "answers" but they're not going to be mechanical "they're all dead" ones, don't get too hung up on resolution, enjoy the mystery instead.

It is a bit annoying that they've halfheartedly decided to make a season two at some point next year though

I don't want an information dump! Just a tease, just a trickle, just something.

I appreciate (and liked) the fact that the living are naturally scared of the undead - despite there being no evidence for the undead to be 'bad' in any way, that was really interesting. But they repeatedly hit you with 'mysteries' that have no further explanation or even appearance or mention again, e.g.

- Never explained what happened to Lena in the woods (though it was briefly hinted at)

- Never explained the butterflies (ffs that was just daft)

- Never explained why the policewoman, Julie and Victor were seemingly stuck in a loop trying to escape the town by car and kept appearing back on the dam

- Never explained the apathy of the people working at the dam

- WATER IN A COFFIN WTF

- The bit where Victor cornered Pierre and things got weird, but ultimately everyone just shrugged it off as if nothing had happened

Just too many questions, too many red herrings, too much 'mystery' that just seemed like bollocks and went nowhere now that it's over.

I enjoyed it immensely up until it finished. They done screwed up imo.

Channel 4's site has a Q+A with the creators:

It's important that the viewer is at the same level as the characters: nobody in the drama knows what is happening and it's interesting to see people asking themselves the same questions as the characters. Nobody really knows what's happening, but as the writers we have a lot of answers to give.

I'm happy as long as that last part's true and they're not just excusing their own making it up as they go.

The last Q+A makes me slightly wary though:

Are you expecting The Returned to go beyond the second series?

CB: We don't know yet. I want that to happen but we don't want it to become mechanical.

I was thinking that the horde were responsible for the flood? I've done my mega review on my website and it's due to publish tomorrow morning. I'll post a direct link tomorrow when it's active if anyone's interested still.

Great review of episode 8. Does anyone else think maybe they've gone back in time at the end?

Being hungover coupled with some shit weather resulted in me watching the whole thing today. Beautifully shot, love the atmosphere, excellent mysteries. I just hope it doesn't disappear up itself before dishing out some answers in series 2.

I'm not sure, the final shot was of a huge town with modern buildings. It'll be the current day town flooded and will be another clue toward the cyclic supernatural goings on.

It's fun whenever some says Le Lake Pub.

Just watched the first episode of the US remake. From what I can remember it seems to be pretty much scene-for-scene. A bit less subtle, and abundant use of Dutch angles for some reason, but the cast is good and I'm just hoping it manages to continue where the original left us hanging.

Les Revenants season 2 was supposed to start this month, no idea if it's still scheduled to or not.

Is currently filming now, due to be shown later in the year. There was some issue that put back the filming from 2014 so the whole thing is delayed by about a year or so.

There was a teaser trailer released recently but it shows/tells you fuck all.

Should I just watch the new US version which has just been added to Netflix or the original French version?

There is also something called Resurrection on Amazon Instant Video which I think is also similar.

The (already cancelled) American version was interesting in that every episode was worse than the last, therefore every time you watched it you were watching the worst episode ever made.

I noticed the second series of this started last week so decided to finally give it a shot. Watched the first two episodes last night and thought it was great. Really fucking creepy, got a distinct twin peaks vibe from it. Unsettling soundtrack from mogwai too. Going to watch the other 7 over the week in time for the next episode.

Christ I hope it starts with a recap, I can barely remember how it ended bar the

looping back into the town somehow, unable to leave

scene.

edit: And that wasn't even the last episode, now I've looked. Going to have to rewatch the last couple, I think. You know, I'm not even convinced I've seen the final episode having read the synopsis. What's going on!
