PlayStation 4 Console Thread

That's not right. The PS4 has delta patching but they can hardly enforce it on developers. Driveclub does this correctly with around 20gb download/disc install and a 10gb for all the patches. The latest patch was 0.5gb which was added to my update file last night.

They both delta patch and my point stands that on Xbox one you get one install package rather than multiple.

Depends how they do it I guess, if the XBOne is just packaging up the initial game and the updates into a single download lump it's functionally the same as the PS4 downloading the initial game and the updates at the same time when you start downloading a game. If they repackage the original game with the update content it's a different kettle of fish.

MS managed to enforce size limits throughout the 360s life via their TRCs. The argument that poor old benevolent Sony would love to have delta updates for everything and the most up to date version as the main download on the store, but those mean old developers keep trampling over them is patently ridiculous.

Yes It could just be a presentation thing but I've re downloaded a few things and the impression I got was that it was all rolled up. It does distinguish between "installing" and "updating".

Nice to see that I offended somebody so much with my questioning of Gooner's statement in my original post that they went back and negged it!

:D

Yep, apparently it's a forum rule and just one of the reasons that the rep system is so damn great!

I know! That's why the system is so easy to play. Imagine if one day, one of you neggers had a mind of your own.

An anonymous source? The article doesn't go into the detail you mentioned about specific things that were wrong with the design either. I wonder who it was, how it's written sounds like it was just made up by the author. I'm struggling to believe the guys at the top would have known about it (the extent of the issue at least or exactly what the problem was) Those guys were ok with chucking $1bn at it further down the line to save their rep and stop the console crashing & burning (literally) would surely prefer an untarnished reputation and no issues from the off? They had time on their side too didn't they at that point?

The GPU is essentially in a hotbox, with a really cheap cooler, is it really that surprising something with the power consumption of a launch X360 would suffer from overheating? leading to failure of the part which was under continual thermal stress?

The entire physical form factor of the X360 was dictated by a desire to appeal to the Japanese market, to the extent they hired a Japanese design firm to make it look slimmer. If you compare the X360 to how the PS3 was cooled, it's a night and day difference, and the PS3 generated even more heat as it consumed more power. Microsoft seem to have been so burned by the design that they've decided to go in the exact opposite direction and make a machine no normal Japanese person will even consider now, at least the cooling isn't a problem this time around.

Dean Takahashi wrote both the authoritative books on the Xbox project, he's a proper journalist who did the necessary fact checking for his story, and you'll notice that Microsoft didn't actually answer his questions about what he found, instead just issuing a statement trying to bury and smear it. They knew they had problems, they assumed they were normal launch problems and not an inherent design flaw (despite some people at least thinking the problems were more serious), something which could be patched out without having to do a redesign, like the way they view their bread&butter software business, which was a costly mistake.

Microsoft’s Xbox team was sure of one thing when it set out to design a new console: If the system won the approval of Japanese consumers, then others would love it as well.

The goal sounded simple enough, but it was something Microsoft had failed at before. The company has sold only 1.7 million original Xbox consoles in Japan, where gamers deplored the system as too brash and bulky.

“You couldn’t get it through the door of apartments in a lot of places,” joked Peter Moore, a corporate vice president in the Xbox division.

Took 40 minutes for me, still quite slow but then PSN is a curiously mixed bag when it comes to download speeds. I downloaded Batman over the weekend, this included the game at 16GB and the patch with some Riddler levels at about 4GB combined and that lot all downloaded in under an hour. For a few dizzy moments I noticed I was averaging over 10MB/sec over PSN.

Honestly. Which fools, who are willing to let me know, because, yes, I'm not going to pay for member privileges, have negged me so heavily for asking who negged my initial question?*

I'll give anyone who owns up a quid.

You can put it towards your therapy.

*so many commas.

'Twas good though.

I'm now downloading all the other stuff from plus this month.

I deliberately switched on my PS3 when I got up this morning to get the Witcher 3 patch, in case peak times make a difference. Appears not, one sec it would be flying down at the full speed, then it would suddenly go sub-broadband for a while, then back to full speed. It's pathetic, you'd think they'd pay for the infrastructure as surely it's their best interest for people to go digital, nope the PSN experience is akin to going to a large Tescos where they only built four parking spaces and there's just the one checkout and the operator has Alzheimer's.

To be honest the only active person who hasn't negged you is you. Presumably you've run out and you'll neg yourself tomorrow.
