PlayStation 4 Console Thread

So finally got hold of my PS4. Luckily, it's just the external box that was fucked by a rhino, so it's fine.

One complaint: real names? Fuck off, Sony. You're not Facebook.

And, given recent comments about noise, even with my ear literally on the console, I can't hear a bloody thing bar a very, very faint hard drive hum-type noise.

Variability in manufacturing seems a common problem. Taking it to bits and putting some better thermal paste on the cooler will likely help, nobody commercially uses the good after-market heatsink compounds, too expensive. Laptops suffer the same general problem.

What games have you tried? Killzone, Driveclub and Last of Us are the worst offenders for me.

Why?

I guess it radiates a lot of heat up and out the top of the box, which has a bigger surface area than the side of the box. It's got a fan pushing air through it front to back but I reckon radiated heat is still a major contributor.

Thanks, but I don't think I'll be doing that.

The point being Game are liable under the SOGA - you can not give up because some clown in the shop tells you they're not - you are entitled to go back to the retailer for 6 years and if there is an inherent fault Game are liable to resolve it. This doesn't mean you automatically get a new PS4 as after a certain age they would be factoring in how much use you got from it so could be a partial refund.

Given you are under 2 years and it is a common problem you will get a repair or replacement console - poss a refurb but giving up is getting you nothing....

You could always send them a twitter message enquiring as to why staff are denying you rights under the SOGA and see how quickly you get it resolved.

Is it a fault, though? I mean, I see it as one for certain, but even Sony themselves didn't say it was a well known fault as such. At the end of the day it does what it's supposed to do, it just does it very loudly. That's how the retailer will see it, right?

If Sony are taking machines back in warranty to re apply thermal paste then yes it is a fault - one that will likely cause the early demise of the machine, its RROD + YLOD all over again..

Bloody hell. No wonder EA gave Plants vs Zombies away. Is there really all there is? Choose one of 4 plants then wander an empty suburb occasionally shooting just one type of zombie? And that's it? There appears to literally be nothing else to it.

It's still installing.

There's a lot more to the game than that. Go to notifications on the top left of your home screen, scroll down to downloads and it should give you an idea of how far it is.

So when will it stop installing? How do you tell? It isn't downloading anything.

I haven't tried the game myself, but have you tried highlighting the tile on the dashboard, pressing Options and selecting Information? That brings you to a screen where you can see details of extra stuff downloading (under "Download Status".) I had to check that a few times when I first tried DoA5: LR - CF...

What's your problem with real names? It's not as if yours is hard to find out, and its entirely optional in any case?

I sent this. I don't write letters or complain about things very often, so I have no idea if what I have written is any good.

[Faulty PS4]

Hello,
I purchased a PlayStation 4 console bundle at launch (November 29th 2013) from one of your stores. It was the Player Edition that came with an extra controller, the camera, and Killzone Shadow Fall. During the first year both controllers suffered the dreaded stick peeling. I was more than happy that I was able to walk into my local GAME and swap them both for new ones. Since then I have been very satisfied with my purchase, until more recently.
My PS4 has started to become incredibly noisy. No matter the game, as soon as it loads up it sounds like a jet engine. The fan is coming on at full speed and stays that way until the game is stopped. I have looked into it the problem and it would appear that it is very common. The thermal paste on the heat sink is inadequate, either insufficient or incorrectly applied. It doesn’t affect all systems, but I am one of the unlucky owners. Sony themselves have admitted that this is a problem and are fixing consoles within the 12mth manufacturer’s warranty free of charge. My system however is almost 20 months old.
I spoke to Sony UK customer services who were very nice, although unfortunately unable to fix my problem for free. I have a reference number for this call: [redacted]. I was told by them, and others, to get in contact with my retailer as under the Sales of Goods Act 1979 you are duty bound to resolve my issue. I am entitled to return to you for up to six years and if there is an inherent fault, such as this, you are liable to fix it. Given that my console is less than two years old, it wouldn't be unreasonable to expect a replacement machine. However...
I called my local store and was quite bluntly informed that after a year, GAME will not touch my PlayStation 4. I was told that the Sales of Goods Act 1979 does not apply and that I should have taken out extended warranty at the time. This, I thought, was unacceptable but I left it at that and called the GAME customer services directly. I was told exactly the same thing.
I am at a loss. The problem I have with my PS4 is very common, with Sony UK themselves informing me that they are fixing any system within the manufacturer’s warranty that have the specific problem that my system has by re-applying thermal paste or sending out replacement units.
I am a long term gamer and have shopped with GAME/Gamestation both online and in store for many years. I feel that I have been fobbed off. The Sales of Goods Act is here to protect us and cannot be ignored, but this is exactly what I have been told to do.
I hope this was just a blip on my store and customer service’s part, and that my issue can be positively resolved. Thank you for reading.
Yours sincerely,

There were many options to choose as the subject header. I went with 'I want to make a complaint'. Due to high volume of contact I now have to wait for up to 7 days for a response (normally 72hrs). I haven't tweeted them.

Apologies for dragging the thread down.

Well, in this case it's because it's too long, so keeps either scrolling or is truncated, depending which screen I look at.

But generally, I just don't like looking at my real name.

I'm not convinced you will get much joy out of the SOGA - Since an inherent fault of design/manufacture is far from proven but its worth a try.

OK, some more PS4 thoughts, in no particular order:

  • The home interface is a shambles. Impossible to find anything quickly. The PS3 one was shite but at least finding things was easy.
  • The controller is a revelation after the PS1/2/3 pads. Love the triggers.
  • Downloading stuff is a lie. A 3GB game then has a 19GB update? Fuck off.
  • There's no simple "things that are downloading" list, which would be nice.
  • It's quiet.
  • I know the 360 basically had it already, but the store just being there instantly rather than a separate app is great.
  • Streaming to the PSTV is incredible. So much so, I'm tempted to hide my PS4 upstairs (with no TV) and have the PSTV in the lounge. Only downside is I can't stream gameplay...
  • ..streaming gameplay is great too.

Not played many games yet (just the PvZ not-game, MouseCraft and about 45 minutes of Transistor) so nothing to show the system off. Driveclub is downloading (only 99+ hours left) which should give it a proper workout.
