PlayStation 4 Console Thread

The PS4, like the PS3-fatty chucks out a lot of heat.

If you keep either in an enclosed space like inside a TV cabinet the fans go bananas.

When mine's in the TV cabinet it sounds like a Blackhawk helicopter. When I use it outside the cabinet it runs quietly.

They need room for decent airflow.

Is the Seagate 2TB external drive (taking off the case) still the forum fave when it comes to upgrading the PS4's stock drive? Planning to order one today if so.

Well its probably the most economic way.

I may have said this before, deja-vu writing this. But my PS4 can go into Jet Engine mode, and yes it's very loud, at least as loud as my old Xbox 360. But it's oddly selective. The first time I played PT the console was taking off for orbit, but the second PT session was barely a whisper (same weather conditions, not a muggy day).

Sometimes games don't push the fan too much... until you go into the pause menu, then it goes full Jet Engine. Huh.

My console has a fairly decent amount of room in the TV Cabinet but I took it out yesterday evening to give it a once over.

Played a lot of F1 2015 and some of Project Cars and the audio levels still seemed loud for what it was doing and went into Harrier Jump Jet mode several times.

I think I'll be taking it back. :(

My PS4 has always had plenty of ventilation and is dust-free. I bought it at launch at my local GAME, and last year I had to have both controllers replaced due to the left stick peeling. They were more than helpful, all I had to do was show my receipt and they handed over new ones. I can't however imagine walking in there with my now eighteen-month-old PlayStation 4 quoting the sales of goods act and expect them to do anything about it. The thing still plays games, so I assume they'll class it as fit for purpose. Despite the noise.

I too read somewhere that the reason for them being so noisy is due to incorrect application of thermal paste. I even heard that some launch models were deliberately sabotaged when being assembled. It's safe to say I have one of the bad ones, anyway.

Just been on the Sony website and typed in my serial number and was greeted with this. Worth calling them anyway?

It looks like you’re out of warranty

Let’s see what we can do to help

You may be able to resolve the problem using our online self-service tool. If you can’t, and you decide to send the product to us for repair or replacement, there will be a fee of £175.00

Just so you know, using our online self-service tool is completely free and requires no commitment. You can decide later whether you want to send your product for repair or replacement.

OK, I have called them. I was offered two options.

  • Pay £175 and have my machine refurbished with all-new parts and have an extended three-month warranty.
  • Speak to my retailer and ask them to replace under the sales of good act, quoting my reference number.

I have been given a reference number from Sony customer support which I am to quote to GAME when they tell me to ring Sony instead. The lady I spoke to said she cannot guarantee that they will be able to replace the console, though. Now to phone my local GAME.

Called my local store. Outside of a year, GAME will not touch the system. I mentioned sales of goods act, the reference number, and that was all I kept being told.

He also said I wasn't allowed to swap my HDD, even though Sony tell you how to do it on their own website.

I called the GAME customer services directly just now, and was told the same thing as the local store person.

They're both talking shite, I suggest you send them one of these:

[Your address]

[supplier's address]

Dear

Reference: [a single sentence summing up your claim]

As it has not been possible to resolve this matter amicably, and it is apparent that court action may be necessary, I write in compliance with the Practice Direction on Pre-Action Conduct.

[Provide a summary of the facts of the dispute]

From you I am claiming [state what you want from the party you're claiming from]

I have calculated this sum [state how you have calculated the amount being claimed]

Listed below are the documents on which I intend to rely in my claim against you:[list the key documents that you will need to use to prove your claim]

In accordance with the Practice Direction on Pre-Action Conduct I would request that you provide me with copies of the following documents:[list any documents you want from the party you are claiming from]

I can confirm that I would be agreeable to mediation and would consider any other system of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) in order to avoid the need for this matter to be resolved by the courts.

I would invite you to put forward any proposals in this regard.

[Alternatively you can set out details of any ADR scheme that you would be prepared to use]

In closing, I would draw your attention to section II (4) of the Practice Direction which gives the courts the power to impose sanctions on the parties if they fail to comply with the direction including failing to respond to this letter before claim.

I look forward to hearing from you within the next 28 days.

Should I not receive a response to my letter within this time frame, then I anticipate that court action will be commenced with no further reference to you.

Yours faithfully,

Mentioning the relevant details.

My launch machine is also loud, to the point where I'm now purchasing multi-platform titles for my Xbox One instead which is near silent.

Same with me. Silence in operation > more pixels. The former could never ruin a gaming experience as badly as the latter.

I wonder if it's down to how much ventilation the system has? Maybe it just requires a shit load of it. I'm a bit worried as mine has been in this glass stand since day one, and has loads of ventilation and runs really quiet:

But I want to get an Ikea Besta stand this weekend like Stefcha has in the gaming setup thread:

I'm paranoid now that I'm going to put it into that and within a week it's going to melt and sound like top gun.
