PlayStation 4 Console Thread

Chaps, I've noticed double tapping the share button brings up a little video record icon. Does that mean it's saving the last 15 mins without me having to go through the menus? Haven't thought to check it properly myself..

You know, this whole "pure console" versus a media machine that happens to play games wasn't necessarily this functionality, which they're drip feeding back in, but the original positioning of the XB1 as the one box you need. I mean, Sony now have this Vue thing, they were never not going to have Netflix, etc. So basically, "pure console" appears to mean "we couldn't be arsed to add stuff we already did on the old machine for local content", because streaming content is front and centre.

The Spotify app by itself isn't brilliant - a bit cumbersome and limited. But the integration with the app on your phone/tablet is what makes it. Practically no lag and it's much more preferable to just do stuff on your phone in the middle of a game than having to quit back to the app all the time.

I keep reading mixed things - can I do that mobile phone remote control action if I'm just a lowly free Spotify member?

I've read this a couple of times but I don't understand it. What's this "pure console" thing?

Everybody moaned because the Xbox E3 reveal focussed on it being an all round system. You remember TV, TV, TV, right? Whereas Sony were all about the power for games.

I think that's what he means anyway, I can't get my head around his garbled first sentence.

That's a "Recording Started" prompt. I find it mostly pointless to be honest. Much easier just to remember to press share after something interesting has happened, rather than before.

How irritating! I presume if you use it, it doesn't tell you when the fifteen minutes are done recording? Wish you could just say "record until I say stop", even if it broke it up into fifteen minute chunks! Bah.

Anyway, separate question, can I just use my pc mic for voice chat, if I plug it into the controller? I'd like to keep my big nice headphones on while playing, so don't really fancy using the bundled headset or something like my phone earbuds with in line mic..

You can also get basic controls from holding the PS button.

15 minutes is very generous though - I don't think the Bone is near to that ;)

Ill say again though, if want something recorded for a long continuous period of time then stream on Twitch.

The Spotify app on its own is really bare bones. You can't even do basic stuff like list your library, separating artists or albums. It's just a continuous list of all your tracks. Not even an A-Z! Of course using it with a phone or tablet is great, but they need to work on that front end.

Pfft, leave the bone trolling out of it! :P

Quality on twitch aint the best though, I'd probably do it via my hauppauge tbh.

So, what about using a bog-standard line in mic into the controller? Anyone know?

I kept mixing it up too. Now I just associate the icon as "record from now" and the standard Share menu as "save the previous gameplay" (after pressing the button.)

Yeah, yeah, late night posting.

I don't recall what language Sony or others used, but the PS4 was touted as entirely focused on gaming, likely in part due to the way the XB1 was initially revealed. That's nothing new, we've probably talked about it umpteen times in this thread. It was the apparent justification for lack of things like local video playback, or even the ability to play mp3s.

My inarticulate point was that there's nothing "gaming only" about the PS4, it's riddled with media streaming services. All they've done is nixed the ability to play local media, otherwise there's precious little difference between the PS3 and 4 in terms of media.

I want to swap my ps4 drive....current one is full. If I get a hybrid 2tb thing can I image the current drive onto it in any way and what kit do I need ? Surely I don't need two extra drives ie backup image and new one ??

The PS4 was always going to play other forms of media apart from games. I don't think anyone thought otherwise. Xbox Ones whole ethos seemed to be TV TV TV though, with all your other TV stuff going through it. I don't think Sony needed to play the TV stuff down I just think it was given and the wrong thing to focus on.

Anyone else having trouble signing in to the PS Store on PC and mobile? I don't think my account has been nicked, as I can sign in to the main account management site and thing look fine, but the store times out rejects me, weird errors, etc.
