PlayStation 4 Console Thread

When it reports the correct results the internal speed test is actually helpful. It tells the user without the upload to shareplay that they can't do it. The problem occurs when the speed test is wrong. They forgot to add the button that says "Try it anyway" :) Typical sony.

I was able to play Bloodborne on my friends PS4 and it worked a treat. So the system is pretty nice (And I may now by Bloodborne when I can get it cheaper)

You'd be wrong

Shareplay is peer to peer with PSN for matchmaking the initial connection. The issue is when Sony's built in speed test fails (My local BT connection is obviously having peering issues to Sony tonight) you don't even get to attempt a shareplay connection

Huh, I always assumed it used the same network infrastructure as Remote Play, so would be entirely reliant on the PSN infrastructure for bridging between the two consoles over the web. Want to hook me up with more details?

Remote play is going to end up as directly routed traffic as well wouldn't it? Using a central server to authenticat and NAT punch but leaving the heavy lifting as peer to peer is pretty standard for this kind of thing.

The alternatives leave the service provider shouldering significant bandwidth costs for no benefit to them while making the end user experience worse by increasing latency.

This is a company who kept their passwords in a spreadsheet called "PASSWORDS". I have not had faith in them doing things the sane and efficient way.

You can be broadcasting to twitch while doing share play with a chum (Although not both at the same time if you have share play switched to high frame rate). Twitch streaming is client/server with twitch doing rebroadcasting to your followers. Share play uses PSN to matchmake with your target and then the actual stream goes peer to peer between the two of you.

But yeah. They're separate mechanisms although both available from the share menu.

So is this supposed to be fully integrated like the old 360 custom music days? I tried music unlimited while playing Destiny but it didn't replace the Destiny music and at the time there were no controls to alter the volume of the Destiny music by itself.

Coming apparently.

It was frustrating and amusing in equal measure. Sony took the time to promote their Destiny playlist for music unlimited that you could listen to as you play but then I found out you couldn't actually turn off the Destiny built in soundtrack at the same time without removing the sound effects too making it pointless.

Or if you don't like sociopaths, here's Ars Technica covering the same subject.

http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2015/03/how-standby-modes-on-game-consoles-suck-up-energy/

If you don't want to eliminate all the benefits of Rest Mode, you can still save some power by turning off specific bits of functionality in the "Power Save" settings menu. Here's a rough estimate of what each function contributes to that 10W power draw (certain combinations will be lower than simply adding Wattages would predict):

"Supply Power to USB Ports": 6.3W

"Stay Connected to the Internet"/"Enable Turning On of PS4 from Network": 2.4W

"Keep Application Suspended": 1.2W

Surprisingly, the power draw for keeping the USB ports on applies even when nothing is plugged in to those USB ports. Plugging in an uncharged DualShock 4 controller draws an additional 5 Watts on top of that. If you still want to recharge your controller after a session without wasting long-term energy on the USB ports, you can choose to disable the USB ports after three hours in the settings menu.

Spotify app is now available - it was apparently a hidden download in last weeks firmware upgrade.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2015-03-30-spotify-app-launches-today-exclusive-to-playstation-for-the-foreseeable

This is something that i've been looking forward to since it was announced, cruising around in GTA or grinding rails in Ollie Ollie with my custom playlists, genuine game changer.

Spotify isn't integrated as well as playlists were on the 360. I just started Destiny while playing a spotify playlist and the Destiny music didn't cut out.

So yeah. It's the same as music unlimited so far. You have to be able to mute the ingame music for it to work.

I do have to question what sort of idiot fucking dev team won't let you turn the music down or off mind you.

Battlefield: Hardline devs would. I think you can turn off the car radio, but not the crappy tunes that play during parts of the game.
