PlayStation 4 Console Thread

Actually replacing the hard drive on a PS4 is amazingly easy. The two major things that tripped me up were:

1. Ensuring that I had the right firmware on the USB flash drive. Maybe I’m just stupid, but it’s not at all obvious which link on the website contains the full download, and not just the most recent update.

2. Having to rebuild the database. I have no idea why I had to do this given that I was installing onto a completely fresh drive, but nothing worked until I booted in safe mode and rebuilt the database.

Copying all my saves across took ages, as did downloading all the updates for all games, but that at least is fairly simple. Although I did lose my Trials Fusion save, which refused to work on the new drive for some unknowable Ubisoft rationale.

it's currently £70, but it's been known to fall...

I see. Not really sure I need or want 2tb though! I'd be happier with the slight increase speed on that 1tb Hitachi.

Can't believe load times are still so bad. MGS Ground Zeroes takes about a minute on PS4, it's about 10 seconds max on my pc. Sigh.

I'm going to buy a PS4 next weekend, but I've got a potential problem with my PSN account. I live in Spain, but I've got a UK PSN account for my Vita.

The internet says I can't change my region to access the Spanish PSN store, or add my Spanish debit card. Now, that's fine and everything, but I've had a quick look and buying a full price PS4 game would cost me 7€ more per game than buying from the Spanish store (plus the faff and fees of transferring money to my UK bank account whenever I want a game). I could create a new Spanish account, but then to keep my collected PS+ games, and be able to play online with games from both accounts, I'd need to get another PS+ subscription. So either way is a bit shit.

Am I missing something? I feel like I must be, because when I moved here all I had to do with my 360 was change my region on the MS website.

That way I'm still paying the UK price for games and not the EU one, which is more expensive.

I think that I can access my UK games on a Spanish account if both accounts are active on the PS4, but does that work the other way round? Could I buy something with a Spanish account, and play it on my UK PS+ account, letting me play it online?

I think you can create a new Spanish account, and buy digital titles on that. Provided your PS4 is set as the Primary PS4 for both accounts you should be able to play the games purchased/acquired on both accounts online. You'd need to keep your PS+ sub running on your UK account to retain the PS+ games you've accrued, but you wouldn't require PS+ on the Spanish account - the downside being you wouldn't benefit from PS+ discounts on your Spanish account purchases.

I'm pretty sure this is how it works for people that already run a US account alongside a UK account.

EDIT: As SMD has pointed out, you won't be able to play cross-buy games for Vita purchased on your Spanish account, because the Vita only supports a single account and you're using your UK one. So you might still want to buy cross-buy titles on your UK account.

CD keys saves me more than €7 on the store prices for digital games, are you getting the euro credit cheaper than the striker price?

Looking at The Order (might be an exception), it's £50 and 60€ respectively. CDKeys sells £42 for 53€. £50 at that price is 63€. Cheaper than moving money and buying off the store with a UK card, but still more expensive than just using my Spanish card on the Spanish store, and not as convenient as just grabbing stuff from the store. 3€ per £50 isn't a problem, but the convenience of digital games is quite important.

I'll try making a Spanish account and accessing the content through my UK one. That seems like a good solution. Thanks!

It'll be a pain in the arse for cross buy titles.

Yeah, that's the main stumbling block if you're a Vita owner.

Disc eject arghhhh 2nd time this year.

Mine kept doing this, had to send it back. In the end Sony said it couldn't be repaired and I got a full refund from the shop I bought it from. Which wasn't bad since it was a bundle and I only sent the console itself back so I basically got a controller and Driveclub for free. And I now bought a cheaper PS4 so I also saved €60,- which will pay for Bloodborne :).

Metro interview with Sony's Jim Ryan.. (MS interview on the way too.)

Think their interviewer was inspired by the Molyneux one as he's pretty direct on pressing him about Driveclub, the first year being poor game-wise, why they allow broken titles from big publishers through while being way more harsh on indies..

GC: From seeing it at a preview it was obvious to me a couple of months out that AC Unity wasn't going to be properly finished for its release date, so it should have been obvious to you as well.
JR: You’re straying into the realm of conversations between publisher and platform holder that should remain private.

GC: And presumably that conversation was you saying ‘Does it work?’ and them answering with [starts winking and miming taking a bribe].
J
R: No! No, no, no!
GC: Well, what happened then? If everyone reviewing the game noticed these horrendous bugs after just five minutes of playtime how did you miss it? You’re happy to put your foot down with little indie developers but because it was a big publisher apparently those rules are ignored.
JR: [deep breath] Ah, yeah. Well, it wasn’t just offline, there were…
GC: The co-op was a minor part of that game, and was not one of the issues most people were upset about. 10 minutes into Unity and I was controlling a flying apple instead of the main character. There was no way anyone involved in that game didn’t know the state it was in when it shipped. All they cared about was hitting their deadline. And by association you were okay with that, you were part of the conversation that said, ‘Ah, who cares? You can fix it later…’
JR: No! I… I think… let’s move on.

JR: PlayStation means different things to different people. For me, one of the great joys of my middle-aged life is sitting with my eight-year-old daughter playing Knack on a Saturday.

GC: Oh, had she been bad or something?

I think it's right. Dev's and publishers should be taken to task for the shocking state of release software these days.

Who cares if something you have been waiting over a year for (perhaps multiple years) is a few months late. Rather that than have things not work and spoil your enjoyment of the game.
