PlayStation 4 Console Thread

I've been tempted the only section that worries me is 3:10 into the video below (removing the clip for the touchpad, it seems fragile & I'm a cack-handed twat who will break it).

It's more robust than it looks I did two of mine. The touch pad didn't work after I put the second one back together so I took it apart again reseated the touch pad connection and everything was fine.

Yeah, one of my mates has stuck in the One sticks and swears by them, but I got a second pad for Xmas and like to use one while the other charges. It would be weird if they were different.

I have two pads with Xbox one sticks and two with standard sticks I often switch between them and never really notice any significant difference between the two.

Yeah other users can play online that's fine, as long as one ps plus subscriber has made the ps4 their primary, but I just wasn't sure about the online save backups. It looks like it doesn't irritatingly, but worth checking just in case I was missing something somewhere in the settings. Ah well.

Wow that's a new one on me pleased they went with that in the end.

It's actually really easy overall; the tricky bit is pulling the two halves of the controller shell apart, and carefully slipping the lower shell over the triggers. Don't pull too hard or it'll all sprong all over the place when it comes free!

Thanks, what's the procedure?

Set the other persons account to be the primary account on your ps4. Then get the other person to set your account to be the price are account on their ps4. Anything you purchase on your account will be playable on his ps4 on any account. and anything he buys is playable on yours on any account. .

I've finally tracked down my problem with the What's New screen on the PS4 but I'm not sure I understand it.

I noticed a while ago my machine didn't seem to be displaying the What's New screen any more. All I got was a spinning circle. This was around the time of the outage at Christmas so I didn't worry about it too much, but when it didn't come back I began to grew concerned.

I've tried every possible network tweak to no avail. But I've just realised that What's New is only broken when I've got a disc in the drive. If I boot the PS4 without a disc, it works fine. If I then insert a disc, it won't display What's New.

Everything else about the machine is working perfectly. I can play games, play online, access the Store, install from disc, everything. Just no What's New, and only when I've got a disc in.

Is there any possible reason for this? It just seems utterly bizarre. Some sort of weird firmware bug?

Works ok for me with Lego Batman 3 in the tray.

It gets odder and odder. If I log my user out and log back in, it works OK. So it's specifically the action of turning the PS4 on (from rest mode or full off, makes no difference) with a disc in the tray that knackers What's New. Makes no sense at all to me. And it used to be fine.

I'm probably going out on a limb here but is there no feedback loop for PS4 OS oddities like this? On XB1 you can report anything, anytime with your own narrative and it goes straight to the OS devs with logs from the system.

maybe it's a delay caused connecting to your network?

cabled or wi-fi?

Cabled, via homeplugs. Could be some sort of delay logging in I suppose but literally everything else works perfectly fine (shop, friends list, online play etc) as does everything else that uses the homeplugs, plus it doesn't explain why it only happens with a disc in the drive.

I've started a thread on their support forum but I don't much fancy sitting for an hour on hold to their support line. I can't see anyone else anywhere reporting a problem like this, though.

On further reflection I've come to the conclusion that the PS4 must be trying to read the disc in the drive on startup and taking slightly too long to do it which is somehow interfering with it logging onto the network properly (and somehow this only affects What's New, not any other online function of the PS4). Whether this is an obscure firmware bug, the first sign of a dying drive or an issue with my network or homeplugs is anybody's guess.

I've sort of worked around it now by setting the PS4 to not automatically log me in. The resulting slight delay (and one additional button press) obviously gives the system enough time to work through its issues and get everything working properly. Odd. Let me know if this starts happening for anyone else.

I'm going to set up that whole game sharing thing with a mate. Can someone answer a couple of questions please?

When we have assigned our primary console as the other persons do I then have to sign in as my friend to download his games?

Does he have to be signed in on my machine to play his games?

Any downsides to doing it (other than no cloud saves)?

When I buy a game on the webstore and set it to download will it only download to his console?

Cheers

I will give quick answers as a bit busy, basically me and my brother have been doing this from launch and managed to get every game to work thus far..... Some require a little more effort than others.

When we have assigned our primary console as the other persons do I then have to sign in as my friend to download his games? Sometimes, not always, sometimes you will log into your profile and it will start downloading the game automatically, most often you will go to the psn store find the game say driveclub for example, and it will be showing as free, so you can just kick off the download.

Does he have to be signed in on my machine to play his games? No

Any downsides to doing it (other than no cloud saves)? I tried to upload a fifa goal the other day and it would not work dont know if that is because its not set as my primary console or because i done something wrong as it was my first attempt. BTW you can use cloud saves you will just have to upload them manually from the settings>game save management area. I replaced my drive and had to do this to ensure i kept all my saves.

When I buy a game on the webstore and set it to download will it only download to his console? I have always bought my games from the psn on my console to be sure, but i think you may be ok using thewebstore, try it on a freegame download to test.

Cheers

If you have any other queries, let me know and i will try and answer them when i can

New version of Toukiden is coming to PSVita and PS4 in March:

God Eater 2 is confirmed in Japan for PS4 so hopefully that makes it across too. It'd be nice if a few Monster Hunter clones made it over here with Cross-Play and maybe even Cross-Buy.

So we set this up but still getting padlocks on each others machines. I got a pop up saying it may take time for licenses to transfer. Case of waiting a while?

Or will it only work for games we buy from now on?

Never seen that pop up as the first thing we done was set each others machine as primary, as such i cant tell you if previous purchases will work. Assuming you have set primary consoles, have you tried the restore licenses option under settings?

These may help

We did restore licenses and it still didn't work :(

I dunno what to try now or why it isn't working. I may try buying Defence Grid 2 and see if that works, if not i'm stumped.

We each de-activated our on ps4s as primaries so the other could activate it. Is this right? You can't have two primary consoles can you?

Yes, so your mate on his console logs into your profile and sets it as the primary, then logs back into his own profile on his machine. You do the same on yours, log into your mates profile then set as primary, then log back into your profile. As i said, i dont know if it would work with previous purchases. Once you have set the machines as primary, dont change them, it has to be left like that.

Now if you was to purchase say drive club on your machine at home, whilst logged into your profile, download and play it on your ps4 and this would then make it available on your primary ps4 (which is your mates ps4). Your mate then should be able to access it under his profile as it should show as free in the store, if not, he needs to log into your profile on his ps4, go to the store and driveclub should show as free, he kicks off the download, logs back into his profile and will see it downloading and he will have access to it. Should be, and is, as simple as that. I do it on ps4 and xb1with my brother, bar a few issues here and there we have got every game to work this way.

Hopefully this helps, if not, google ps4 game sharing and you should find more detailed explanations than i can provide here.

Thanks for taking the time to answer. I haven't actually tried to play the games since we did this to see if that sorts it.

No problem, when it works and you are getting your digital games for half price then it will all be worth it. I trust i dont have to mention CDKEYS at this point to bring the price down further ;-)
