PlayStation 4 Console Thread

It's a technical marvel but it does depend very much on the game you're playing. It's capped to a maximum of 30 fps and like you say the controls aren't all there on the Vita so the games adopt a variety of strange touchscreen solutions to get around that. When it works, it works very well. I've played games as diverse as Assassin's Creed and Final Fantasy XIV over Remote Play with great success, but equally many games won't suit it. Treat it as an optional extra rather than a reason to purchase.

Basically, if this kind of feature is really important to you, buy a Wii U.

Its alright but milage will vary depending on the game and your keeness to play remotely. The resolution of the stream and the latency can both vary which makes it range from feeling like living in the future to virtually unplayable. I have tried on both the vita and my Z3 and TBH I think it works better on the phone. Its a virtually identical experience interms of the quality of the team but using a DS4 rather than the vita makes a big difference as the latter can get very fiddly on games with complex controls (e.g. GTA)

Cheers both. It's little more than a passing thought right now - for the most part, it'd be for the sake of having another way to play some stuff while I'm at home, but it's time for Holby City / Silent Witness / Another Silent Witness / Something Rubbish I Don't Want to Watch but She Insists. Is it pretty consistent (save the controls) on your own Wi-Fi?

More intrigued about it than anything else. It does sound pretty hardcore futuristic.

Mines is like a really faint "wheep". Like it's from the HDD or something.

My PS4 has also frozen and crashed completely when using YouTube twice so..

Ah, this is a fairly loud beep. Can easily pass an hour or two in silence, then it jerks me out of post-apocalyptic Moscow with its needy electronic bleat.

I haven't tried hitting it yet, to be fair.

Seems to be. If you're in the same room as the PS4 you can connect directly to the machine itself which should give the best results for Remote Play, otherwise you can go via the home router which I suppose could add a little bit of lag but to be honest it seems pretty much the same to me.

The only oddity I found - and I've not seen anyone else report this - is that Remote Play was significantly worse (more laggy) when I had my PS4 plugged into an HDMI switcher and the TV turned off. As soon as I plugged it into a dedicated HDMI socket on the TV, it worked beautifully (again, with the TV off). Very odd but reproduceable at my end so worth bearing in mind depending on your setup.

You could play Vita games on the Vita.

I am tempted by the Vita now I'm paying for Plus and have the option of remote play thrown in. I don't have a good track record of portables, in that they tend to not get played, but maybe this time would be different. Especially if I can crack out some Spelunky and Isaac while the TV's being hogged...

The Last of Us is an amazing game & one I loved playing on the PS3. I'm hoping to pick up the PS4 re-release later this year to enjoy the game again & also play the DLC Left Behind.

On your Destiny questions take a look on Ebay for cheaper expansion passes or wait for a possible sale?

Someone selling for £23

Destiny PvP I don't enjoy but give it a go you might like it.

Headphones I can't help I only have cheapy £10 Orb PS4 headset which does the job just fine for me.

The Official PS4 wireless headset has been mentioned quite a few times.

There was an offer at Tesco recently so you might want to keep an eye on Hot Uk Deals for any new offers.

Out of warranty? I'm sure someone else was quoted £170 by Sony for that fault - pretty nasty given its age and the fact this seems a common fault.

As I was fetching the new PS+ games from the store yesterday, I noticed that advert for the extended warranty. It's $53 for 3 years and I'm half tempted, given these quirks. I'm sure that out of 18m consoles sold, there's probably a minor fraction having hardware issues, but it sounds like a chunk of change to get repaired.

Is this a daft idea?

I still find it variable when connected at home with drops in resolution and frame rate from time to time. It's handy in a pinch but I would not say it's is viable option of extended play

In the US where you're basically SOL after 90 days usually, I'd totally go for that for thirty quid.

Thing I found about using remote play was the text extremely hard to read - given most PS4 games are designed to be running at 1080 it doesn't scale very well to a 5" screen! However plenty of Vita games to play though (especially if you have PS+ too).

Having recently played for a few hours on a Wii U this is the way to go for second screen gaming IMHO... its designed from the outset to all work well together - and it does. Other than the range not been great but I guess its designed for the living room scenario - carry on gaming whist something else on TV.

The rubber on one of the thumb sticks on my controller is starting to peel off already, despite only having it for two weeks, and barely using it. I've maybe played 10 hours or so of Destiny, and that's it.

I've contacted Amazon, but they're just saying I have to contact Sony. Or I can return the whole console bundle, which I obviously don't want to do. The whole reason I bought with them was because I thought their customer service is good, but they're refusing to budge it seems. That's pretty crappy service, especially on something so obvious going wrong on such a high ticket item.

They've even admitted they're aware of the problem.

This is from their live chat. He's refusing to budge, just saying that they've been told by sony to tell customers to contact sony directly.

I asked to escalate it, he said to contact them via email and complain that way. Pretty shocking service though from them.

Ok, now they've said I can order a new console package, take the new controller out, replace it with faulty controller, and then it'll be collected and sent back. Seems like a lot of work for them to just replace a controller, but fair enough.

EDIT: And now, after going away to do that, the guy's come back 5 minutes later to say that he can't do that due to the current policy that customer's have to contact Sony, but he can refund me £44.44 for a new controller lol Common sense prevails, eventually. To be fair to Amazon, I've only ever found their customer service to be amazing before, which is why I went with them. Just had to keep on at them a bit more than normal this time.

Good to hear. Amazon are usually much better than most. They sent me a new controller free of charge and didn't want the old one back. Would totally go with them for future hardware purchases. Pays to be persistent!

I didn't realise there was already heated debate on that topic. Sorry to derail! Anyhow, it all depends on the specs of that sony walkman, it may have a very decent DAC chip in it with appropriate sound quality to justify the cost. I certainly lament the passing of my i-river H120, the last time I had decent sound on the go. The variety of Spotify on iphone is a good substitute mind.

I'll maintain though it's daft to suggest there's no upgrade in quality in cd players at 1000 quid. Though it does depend what you're outputing to. Anybody who argues otherwise I imagine hasn't any experience of it.

This post made me go and search out my H140 which seems to be in perfect working order along with it's inline remote. I've now started reading about how to upgrade it so I'm on a dangerous path now.

Definitely, I bought both my Xbox One and PS4 through them, mainly because of how good they'd been in the past.

Anyone know when Amazon refund you money if it shows up anywhere on the Amazon site, or whether it just pops up back in your bank account? I should have asked the guy before I closed the chat.

Got an email now confirming they've given me the refunded amount, and checking on the order page for that item it's got the refunded amount, along the extra £20 I remember now I was given earlier- it had gone down £20 the week after I ordered it, spoke to them just on the off chance, and as a good faith gesture, they refunded me the difference.

For me, it's worth paying a little more on consoles and making sure I go through Amazon with that service.

I thought the Amazon service you recieved seems pretty fair.

The result is great, but the initial line I was given was 'Sony have told us to tell all customers with this problem to contact them directly'. At first they didn't even offer a refund. I can understand in a way why they'd try that on, as I'm sure they've had a fair few people complain about the issue, but that's a pretty shonky first response when they know about the problem. All's well that ends well though.
