PlayStation 4 Console Thread

The pad itself has the intelligent bits to cease charging once the battery is full, right? I'd happily go with one of these non-Sony ones, were that the case.

Yes, of course. You can't build a Li-Ion circuit without that, the brains are always in the cell and not the charger. Mind you, some of the cheaper third party ones don't even have a charger -- they have two USB ports instead, for you to plug your own USB chargers (plural) into. Which is just awful.

How the shitting hell does this

...cost £50? It's a piece of moulded plastic and a 2x5V/0.5A output charger brick. It costs the square root of fuck all to make.

I know consoles and accessories are razors-and-blades but even so, that's some fucking nerve.

Edit -- and does anyone have anything that's similar but doesn't cost more than a night in the Premiere Inn?

I paid £22.99 for it from the exact same link recently. They must've had restocks that went quickly, because when I sent the link to a friend to order one, external sellers were trying to get away with £89.99. 'Tis the season, I guess :(

So ... first impressions.

I like the unit, it looks really slick and it's much smaller than I expected. Love the LED on the top. Controller feels nice too. The menu interface is a big improvement from the X-Bar or what was it called, I find it really intuitive and snappy. Tried a bit of DriveClub but want the weather/photo updates installed first which are downloading now. I also filled the download queue with the obscene amount of PS Plus stuff I got for free over the last year. Currently updating GTA V on the PS3, after that I'll transfer to the PS4 and do a comparison thing by switching between the PS3 and PS4 HDMI channels while fapping myself into a frenzy :P

I really like the controller. I was never a Dual Shock Hater like most people here, but I always preferred the Xbox pads. The DS4 is lovely though, it completely melts away in your hands and you don't even notice it's there. Only the Options and Share button positions are a bit awkward, but that might just need some getting used too. The big LED on the back that reflects in my screen can fuck right off though. Is it possible to switch off? GTA V feels like a new game on this, so much better than last gen.

It's a built in Move controller for when they were going to force everyone to have the camera and make some games that used it.

Sure, I know, but not any more, because not many people have the camera. Certainly I don't have it but I still have the light. So now some game devs use that colour for in-game features (e.g. GTA's flashed red/blue when the police are on your tail), which is cute but almost entirely negated by the fact that you can't see the light when the pad is in your hands because of the raked angle of the but the light is in. I stand by my statement that it's an evolutionary dead end like the appendix.

It's a bit pointless but after hearing that chat about the Morpheus from the PS experience, it was quite a clever bit of future planning on their part, coupled with the camera, it can track your position etc if you've got the Morpheus strapped to your noggin.

Admittedly not useful as the Morpheus isn't out yet and so on but at least it's not a case of having to re-buy DS4's with the light bar if you do get the morpheus.

I've got mine on the dimmest setting now and it doesn't bother me anymore.

@DocG there are other 3rd party charging docks that are a lot cheaper but they connect through the mini USB above the light bar which actually makes them a right pain in the arse to put in the charging dock (I find anyway) I think I got one from CEX for about a tenner or something, wasn't much.

Gotta claw back that premium rate memory card money somehow.

I bought Rock Boshers DX Directors Cut and am really enjoying it. It's a lovely nostalgia hit, and at four quid, even the price is almost akin to the games I used to buy thirty years ago. :)

I particularly liked the trophy i got for

sitting through the entire Sinclair Spectrum-style loading sequence. The trophy is called "Patience". :D

I genuinely don't understand what those charging stations do, that a USB cable from my PS4 or PC doesn't do.

It is in a nice little stand so you can show off your PS4 controllers to friends who come to visit.

I agree it's useless, I would rather put the money towards another game.
