PlayStation 4 Console Thread

- the in-dash music sounds, as my wife put it, "like background muzak in a third-rate aromatherapist." She's not wrong. The "bonk" noise when you select something sounds the same at GT5, though, which is cool.

Turn the sounds and music off in Settings. Do it. Do it now. Regain your UI sanity.

Also, check the PSN and Power Saving settings for auto-updates and stuff.

I think it's a huge shame they didn't just use the same default theme as the PS3 did, it was great how it gradually changed colour over time. Felt fresh. That whole OS was classy as fuck, slowness aside.

Apart from the sparkles. Fuck the sparkles.

Turned the music off quick-sharp. Kept the "bonks" for now, I find them pleasantly cheerful. They're mixed a bit loud though.

Rummaging through settings was the second thing I did after putting some PS+ stuff on to download, because I am a huge nerd.

I've actually set my PS4 up properly now, after the initial "check to see if it works then put it away until I've tidied under the telly and sorted some things out". Like Doc says, the UI and controller are really nice, and I actually appreciate having the option of plugging in via USB (I went through tons of batteries with the 360 before picking up a wired pad / play&charge thing.)

Probably should have downloaded this 1.14Gb GTA update earlier this week though...

I love my PS4. It's delivered some of the finest games I've played in a long time over the past six or seven months after a slow start, and has very much managed to tear me away from PC gaming and back to consoles for the first time since the original Xbox. Couldn't be happier with it.

Picked mine up from Argos at lunchtime. Am I right in thinking I'll need to leave this updating all evening before I can use it?

No depends on your internet connection, should not take too long to get latest firmware.

No, it's not that bad. Mine needed a system update before I could sign into PSN but that only took about ten minutes (I do have pretty fast internet though.) There's a few too many setup screens to scroll through when first signing into PSN, however it still only takes a few minutes. GTAV + FC4 downloaded ~2 GB of patches, which again didn't take long. Only obnoxious part was the GTA V interminable "installing..." process on first play; that was about 20 min or so. Just play FC4 instead :)

I'm also in, so I can hold forth with my experiences and opinions, all of which you'll have heard before.

I had trouble logging into PSN - met with a tedious error number. I can't remember how I fixed it but it was something unintuitive and stupid. Oh, wait, it was parental controls for some reason not being at the highest level (this was a brand new unit). Perhaps that's in the setup instructions, but they were lost among the plastic bags and twisty bits. A more helpful error message would have been great.

Cross-buy paid off well for me, and I was pleasantly surprised to find my entire Spelunky profile had come across - scores, stats, music settings, the works. That was great.

PS+ also delivered the goods and I have no qualms about subscribing to that.

Minecraft was a shambles - downloaded the demo, which didn't say it was the demo, and then in the game it prompted me to buy the full game. But then it took me to the demo page in the store, which told me I already owned it. Finally had to go into the store's A-Z list and find the Minecraft unlock item. Edge taken off bitterness by it only costing £3, presumably a cross-buy bonus.

I had to laugh when my digital Last of Us announced itself as 40gb, but the smart download system (presumably combined with the linear nature of the game) meant that it was actually ready to play faster than my physical copy of GTAV.

Pad is nice, for sure. Still adjusting from the PS3 pad and was a bit wobbly in Spelunky for a few runs. A bit disappointed it doesn't use mini USB like the PS3, mainly because I have a nice long mini lead that reaches the sofa. But it can charge in sleep mode, so hurrah for that. Pad speaker I found annoying more than anything, and had to turn down almost all the way. The flashing lights when the cops activate in GTA is fantastic.

Games look gorgeous, obviously. I nabbed a second hand Black Flag, and while I assume that's still somewhat hampered by its last-gen roots, it's just mesmerising to gawp at. Resogun is a delight, and it's great to see my daughter getting stuck into a larger Minecraft world.

I'm happy with it, for sure. I was set to keep my PS3 alongside it, but now I'm considering getting shot of it as part of a brutal one-in, one-out initiative and ploughing the trade-in value into more games. I figure if I get Far Cry 4 to go alongside Minecraft, Spelunky and GTA, 90% of my PS3 use will have shifted to the PS4. I might keep it as a sacrificial Blu Ray / media player.

And that's my courageous story.

Had to laugh when I called customer support just now to sort out a return system for a fucked GPU only to be told their systems are down and to try again tomorrow.

Oh Sony.

It's maintenance. You should've gone on hold before 1:00 pm today.

New PS4 user here, coming from PS3 - is it possible to use my U.S and Jpn accounts I set up on the PS3 on my PS4 and can you still buy from other region stores and play on your UK profile? Apologies if it's been asked a million times before...

Yeah, multiple accounts from different regions is fine as is buying from the different stores. Make sure you set each account to use your ps4 as the primary console.
