PlayStation 4 Console Thread

What in the fuck of revisionist history is going on here? CoD2, PGR3, Geometry Wars, Amped 3, Condemned, Oblivion, GRAW, Dead Rising, TDU, Gears of War, Rainbow Six Vegas and Viva Pinata. All but one a console exclusive, all in the first year. That's a cracking first year that surely anyone would be pleased with.

Look, the PS4 hasn't had a great year with exclusives but Driveclub aside is hasn't been complete dogshit either. However lets not go crazy and try to convince ourselves that the 360 had a crappy year to make us feel better about the PS4. Just be happy with it and know that next year will be much better in terms of exclusives with some great games to look forward to. If you're just happy with multi-platform/cross generational stuff then I think both the PS4 and Bone have had a great year. I know that I've certainly complained that there are too many games out already and what a strong year for games it has been.

I've barely turned on my PS4 over the course of the year simply because the Bone and Wii U have been so strong but I've definitely got my monies worth with the fun that Towerfall brought into the living room and PT is probably the most memorable entertainment experience I've had all year. I really hope people don't forget about that game so soon. I also sort of liked Infamous.

The same people who bashed TLOU because it's a remaster are the same that are losing sleep over the master chief collection.

Are they? Who's that then?

Horses for courses and all that but I've barely used my Bone and WiiU this year. Forza Horizon and PvZ the only highlights for me on Bone and beyond MK and Bayonetta I'm not sure what's meant to have floated my boat on WiiU. What's been most stark is the absence of interesting indie titles on the Bone compared to 360 - did MS intentionally alienate themselves from indie developers at some point? PS4 by contrast has enjoyed an absolute tonne of indie games and it's where I've played nearly all multi-plats. Both categories are frequently glossed over when considering a consoles relative strengths which I find odd.

what have the Romans done for us?

I think people like to point out that people don't take into consideration the indie titles more than people don't take into consideration the indie titles. Also people bring it up as if the other platforms don't have smaller quirky games. Front and centre on the Wii U store at the moment is a huge banner for Shovel Knight.

My PS4 went months between even bing switched on. I got the Infamous pack, which I played for a few hours and then got terribly bored with. Then it sat and gathered dust until TLOU was realeased, that get a few weeks play, and then nothing until I got ripped off by DC. The PS4 indie collection has no interest at all, as I've got access to a far richer (and cheaper) indie scene on the PC, much like many other people, you dont need a monster PC for most indie stuff. As for multi platform games, well yea...

As a machine purchased solely to play exclusive titles, I've been very dissapointed in the PS4 so far. Sony own all these studio's, what the fuck have they been playing at?

The first year of the 360 definitely wasn't great, but the new dashboard and Xbox Live integration helped us all cope I think. I was a bit disappointed with the first few months of the PS4's download-only titles, but then I looked back at the entire first year of Xbox Live Arcade and was surprised to find how rubbish it actually was.

Anyone remember Tomb Raider Legend on the 360? You had to knock the console down to 480p every time you played it because the framerate was so fucking bad otherwise

Not a bad year for the PS4 however dire in terms of exclusives IMHO.

Things I mostly played were:-

Resogun, Destiny, lots of little Indy games and of course more recently DriveClub. The PT demo was great too which is ironic as it was a free demo however really looking forward to Silent Hills on the back of this.

Not been overly happy with PSN though considering it is a now paid for service it needs to get better.

Things I do like about PS4 though is the actual patching process is a lot slicker than it was on PS3 (can't be any worse IMHO). Oh and the pad is great and a massive improvement for me over the DS3.

Share play is great too tried it out the other night and it worked really well other than a bit of expected lag reported by person playing shared game at the other end.

Looking forward to seeing what Sony deliver in 2015...

Looking back over the first year of the PS4, I've enjoyed the following:

Resogun (still my most played, sincere thanks to Driveclub for being late - Got this gem instead)

Killzone - Played and finished. Story was pants but I thought it played well. MP was pretty decent I thought, not as frantic as COD:AW)

TLOU - Played and finished. Loved it, never bothered with MP though.

Infamous:Second Son - Played and finished 100% complete. Loved it.

Infamous: First Light - Played and finished. Enjoyed it, but haven't 100% completed it.

Watch Dogs - Borrowed off a mate. Played it for about half an hour and gave up. Didn't enjoy it at all.

The Club beta - Not good, deleted.

Destiny - Played and got to level mid teens. Never really got the bug like others did. It felt grindy to me, and the story & voice acting made Killzone look like Shakespeare.

COD:AW - Haven't finished story mode but it's the same old same old. Enjoying MP even though I'm terrible at it. It's not like MW2 though, I can't play it for hours at a time. Half an hour at a time is enough for me as it's so fast paced.

There's others but I can't think of them right now.

Most of the PS+ indie games have been played once or twice and then forgotten about. I know I should give them more attention but don't have time these days. I need to make time for them over the Christmas hols.

All in all a steady first year, nothing to compete with PS1 launch year and Tekken/Wipeout/Ridge Racer though. Here's hoping year 2 brings more good stuff.

I don't care about exclusives, a game being available on another platform doesn't affect my enjoyment of it in the slightest.

The first six you listed were launch titles , oblivion and graw were summer games and everything you listed Dead Rising onwards all came out in the space of six weeks!

The 9 months or so in between were shit ! You just reinforced my point!

People bashed it because it was a quick cash grab, nothing more than an upres and the framerate actually being acceptable, sold as a full price title.

No, most critics and gamers love it, only people i've seen slag this game off are hardcore xbox fans who've never even played it. The games rock solid technically and you got all the DLC , it's an absolute bargain at any price. Besides it was being sold around £30 by most retailers come launch so the price is a moot point regardless.

I know! Imagine that happening now... It's not like the big game out this week has advice such as "Turn off your internet to improve the shitty frame rate..." Oh, wait...

The article was pretty interesting and while I have had a good time with the ps4 it is nice to note that the press are picking up on the gaming public not being happy with Sony and the goodwill being lost.

The MS one will likely be the reverse while mentioning a much stronger games lineup - ahhh I see why you don't fancy that one...

The article was moronic. Why have we bought these consoles, what are they for? If he can't answer that for himself he shouldn't have bought one.

The PS4 continues to sell, and bar the shambles that was/is Driveclub it's been fine. I've had a great time with mine this year and I'm looking forward to the next. MS don't have a stronger games lineup unless you really want Forza - in which case fine. I don't fancy reading it though because I've got better things to do with my time than listen to fanboys whine.

One thing that I forgot to add to my previous post was that even the run up to launch was enjoyable.

Booking the day off work, tracking the DPD driver and reading about the other excited new owners in this thread was great.

The downside to the next gen of gaming (not just on PS4 I hasten to add) seems to be that the beta has replaced the demo, and quite a few AAA titles have been released in almost alpha state.

I understand the need to hit deadlines but selling knowingly broken goods is a piss take that certain companies involved in the latest gen should be ashamed of.

OK, the previous generation consoles weren't 100% bug free but it's happening more often and in worse and worse states by the looks of it. Minor patches are one thing, weeks of downtime on games that are advertised as being multiplayer based is another. I'm surprised that there haven't been class action lawsuits in the US for some of these issues.

Hopefully as this gen settles down publishers and developers will be able to plan accordingly, rather than being overly optimistic about how long things take.

On the whole, I give the PS4's first year 4 Gs.

I played it, enojoyed it and still felt it that Sony were putting out nothing more than a cynical quick cash grab by making it a full price title. If they had actually put a bit of work into it (see MCC Halo 2 for an example) then it would have warranted being priced as it was. Sony knew that they had an audiance that was starving for titles and had for a large part not been PS3 owners, so they got ND to punt out a quick upres with hadly a lick of paint to spruce things up.

Edit: Anyway, the point is you were crying about people bashing TLOU but not the MCC. Which is a terrible comparison as not only does one have a ludicrous amount more content, but Halo 2 has had an incredible amount of work put into it.

Ohh come on, it has a much better line up - Forza 5, Forza horizon 2, Dead rising 3, Sunset overdrive, Halo MCC, Titanfall, Killer Instinct Vs TLOU and err, Knack, Shadowfall and Driveclub :lol:

I have had plenty of fun on my PS4, once i fixed the pad and if PSN happens to be up (bud's tish) but it lacks games as bad as the PS3 did and much like that the competition has a much better line up - i am sure there will be loads of great games but we are talking about the first year and it's not been great if you want variety or quality exclusives.

They put plenty of work into it ! you make it sound like they just flicked a switch to get it to run at 60fps and 1080p. You got the entire suite of multiplayer content and the Left Behind DLC. The load times were dramatically cut, they added the photo mode, it's about as perfect as you could ask for. Genuine question, What more did you want/ expect from it ?

Halo 2 is 10 years old and from 2 console generations ago, damn right they should have put 'a bit of work into it' it was designed for 4:3 televisions for a bloody start.

Talking of Final Fantasy, it's a series I've not been interested in at all for quite some time; ever since getting a PS2 just to play Final Fantasy X and being incredibly disappointed. As such I haven't followed any news on FFXV at all until the a friend showed me one of the recent videos. It's a wonderfully mad mix of 1950s america aesthetics and the world of Xenoblade Chronicles. I'm suddenly quite interested.

I enjoyed it, but it wasn't a full price title, it was a warmed up port of a previous generation game. Most of what you list comes from nothing more than running on better hardware.

'a bit of work' lol

Like I said, comparing the two games and moaning that people are not complaining about the MCC when they might have done with TLOU is crazy when you look at the work and effort put into each.

Don't begrudge a single penny of what I paid towards TLOU. The definitive version of a sublime game. Sure I read some article in Edge where Naughty Dog said it was a huge undertaking to port and took over a year to do. I know you always get some marketing spin with these things, but I've no reason not to believe ND.
