PlayStation 4 Console Thread

It seems pretty bloody similar to me. Anything worth playing was multiformat, and the exclusives were almost all disappointing.

If you didn't have a PS4 this year, you'd have still have been able to have just as good a time with the same games, I'd say that makes it a pretty poor year really.

The PS3 just had very poor launch games and then any game also on the 360 was better than that, awful pad and it was disgustingly expensive!

I don't really care that i can play the games on the last gen consoles and no i wouldn't have had the same fun with the same games - stuff like BF4 is a different game on the ps4 to the ps3 (i have it on both)

The big thing for me is that i have played loads on the PS4 this year, far more than i did on ps3 the year before and i don't own or have any interest in the exclusive games, well i do own Driveclub...

I guess my BF4 addiction as helped but i have had loads of fun with indie games - having a new shiny console has opened up loads of games i wouldn't have played on the last ten even if some of them are there!

Without Plus and if you don't like indie games, there's been loads of delayed to 2015 though but that seems to be cross platform as much as it is anything.

I do find it weird though, were the specs not clear enough when people started prepping for this gen? Or is it a lot harder than previous gen? I thought it was a case of it all being generally similar but there being a bit more oomph available?

Then again, that shows how little I know about game dev I suppose :P

The Eurogamer article is weird; it talks as much about third party multi-platform games as it does the lack of first party PS4 exclusives yet paints the former as PS3 and PS4 titles. It doesn't recognise that all the afflictions of HD remasters (including the Xbones big Xmas release...) and cross generational titles that we might not actually need apply equally to XBone.

I get complaints about lack of exclusives and delays, and I definitely get complaints about the online network. They're absolutely justified. But to argue that the PS4 suffers from third party cross generational titles in a way that portrays it as a failure is a bit strange. Watch Dogs was as big a disppointment for many on XBone as it was PS4.

Personally, I've had a great year. I've played and completed an eclectic variety of titles and, having not owned a PS3, many of those HD remasters are completely new to me. I'm annoyed with the online network, but less so than I got with the 360 dashboard updates from MS, so swings and roundabouts.

Picked up Ground Zeroes while it was on sale the other day and played it tonight. Having owned it on 360 I knew what I was doing and had a blast playing it. It looks lovely too. Going to do all the unlocked missions tomorrow.

It's got me all hyped for Phantom Pain all over again having put it to the back of my mind. :D

You do realise they haven't done the Xbone article yet?

It's completely pointless doing another article for Xbone. Far better and less divisive just to focus on the year in gaming, noting platform exclusives/successes/failures along the way. To be honest though, I don't need third rate journalists to tell me what I already know.

The article was pretty interesting and while I have had a good time with the ps4 it is nice to note that the press are picking up on the gaming public not being happy with Sony and the goodwill being lost.

The MS one will likely be the reverse while mentioning a much stronger games lineup - ahhh I see why you don't fancy that one...

The same people who bashed TLOU because it's a remaster are the same that are losing sleep over the master chief collection. Which doesn't even work online properly on xbox live, the amazing, infallible, paid network service.

The eurogamer article doesn't mention TLOU or the 2 infamous games. Both console have such a similar line up of games at this point I don't really get the point of the article at all.

Either way both machines have had a much better first year than 360 or PS3 respectively, those were dark times indeed.

Yeah man, X-Men the Movie 3, Chromehounds, Rumble Roses XX , Far Cry Instincts Predator , Over G Fighters, Bomberman Act Zero, Rapala's Pro Fishing and Prey were just god tier! summer 2006 was horrendous, probably the worst I can recall.

Outside of Condemned, PGR 3 and CoD2 at launch it was a pants first year. Oblivion was great if you liked purple pants RPGs ( I didn't at the time ) and GRAW was a good rental, but until Dead Rising and Gears of War dropped it just gathered dust

Yeah but GOW & dead rising were released in the first year so it already had 2 smash AAA game, unlike the PS4 - it also kicked off online gaming, live arcade and well basically it was a much better first year, obv the bone has come much closer but neither can come near the 360!

Hmm. Yes because thankfully lots of games are now multi platform but I think at the moment they're pretty different on the exclusives in what they offer. I think it'll balance up even more next year.

Can't wait to play the next Uncharted.

The first few months were poor for 360, PDZ was abysmal, Prey a massive let down, however I spent all my time playing COD2 which was excellent. Then Oblivion dropped in Spring and Dead Rising in the Summer and what about Rianbow Six Vegas? I'm with Shimmy here, the 360's 1st year was not bad. BF4 is pretty much the only AAA game I've spent any time with on PS4. Far Cry 4 and GTA V will hopefully save it.

I made a montage:

I've had a lot of fun with the PS4 first year. I can understand people being a little bit disappointed on the exclusive AAA front, but personally it doesn't bother me. I only need a few big games as I tend to play smaller, shorter titles more. I find that they cover a broader range of genres and require less time commitment.

Disappointments? Still waiting on N++, The Witness and Planetside 2. Also, some digital emulation of PS1/PS2 titles would be nice. The only real disappointment has to be Driveclub situation really - absolutely farcical.

Also, Sharefactory is the best.

I thought there were some disappointments. Killzone, NFS Rivals, Watch_Dogs, and Infamous all felt like empty shells to me. I also wish that some of the recent indie glut or maybe some cross gem stuff like Diablo had been released earlier to cover the lull early in the year.
