PlayStation 4 Console Thread

Monkichi, your console sounds like it's having issues. Discs ejecting or using a screw or whatever just isn't right.

This might sound like I'm SDF or some bollocks but I've not really had any issues with the console itself apart from the rest mode being broken.

My original 360 still wins prizes for totally scratching some discs to fuck if I positioned it vertically. PS4 hasn't managed anything that brilliant, although PSN wins the prize hands down for worst online. I think Nintendo might even be better at online than Sony now, which is an amazing thing to even consider...

Are you being serious? I know the 2.0 update had caused the issue with rest mode and although I updated to the 2.02 or whatever I just assumed today's issue was a hangover from that. The disc ejecting thing hasn't happend in a few weeks but then I don't use it much, it's just that when I looked online it seemed to be a common issue and Sony's website even has a section on it. I think that's where I got the screw fix instructions from (there's a little screw which I think doubles as the manual eject if you get a disc stuck). It may not even be the screw thing that fixes it since I have to disconnect the console to do that anyway.

It's such a glitchy console that I just assumed it was par for the course and would be fixed with an update. Ironically my thumbpad hasn't had any of the issues a lot of you seem to have had.

Yep, totally serious. My launch console made a terrible grindy noise on the drive and I exchanged it immediately, it was clearly not normal. Now, I don't have the eject disc bug thing but if I did - and by that I mean that if I had to strip down the console to adjust a screw to get it to load a disc on even an intermittent basis - I'd be sending it back. That's not the quality I'd expect from a device that costs that much. Then again, I take iPads back when their screens have clear bleeding issues or look like they've been soaked in urine and end up arguing with store assistants, so maybe I'm just less tolerant.

Sony covering it in an FAQ doesn't mean you have to accept it happening regularly.

The rest issue was clearly a software bug, and one that got fixed very quickly, so can't say it bothered me. Other software issues don't bother me either - consoles had always crashed, as have computers, and that's just a fact of life.

Never heard of screwfix, reboot or discs ejecting randomly. I'd also suggest a replacement.

It is a very common fault, i know two people personally who have it - there are two fixes and if you report it to Sony they will tell you the fixes and not swap a machine until you have tried both. No idea if mine has it as i have one disc in the machine at all times and everything else is digital! ( 3 full releases and all the ps+ and indie stuff, i don't have a huge catalogue of games)

Me too! LOL Destiny in the drive and has been for nearly two months now. :)

Although TBH not had the PS4 on now for nearly a month or so was thinking about packing it away until some more AAA exclusive games get released.

What's everyone playing on their PS4's at the moment anyway?

Why would you contact Sony, when the retailer is responsible for replacing the device for its entire lifetime?

Tthe disc ejecting is common. Common enough, in fact, to have an official "fix" in the Playstation FAQ bit.

It happens to mine in bouts. It hasn't happened for a few weeks, but then it'll go through stages where it'll do it every day for a few days running. A hard reset sorts it. I haven't resorted to screw tinkering yet. I would send it back, but then I'd have to go without Destiny for a week or so.

I've had my PS4 since around February and I've mostly enjoyed it due to the abundance of PS+ games however, other than The Last of Us Remastered, I'm not interested in any of the retail games so far or many of those announced. Guilty Gear Xrd will make up for that hopefully though it still doesn't have a European release date (I'll import a US copy in December).

Anyway, that sort of thing is par for the course in the early life of a new system(and I've been an early adopter of Nintendo systems since the N64 so I'm used to it) but trying to arrange a game of Nidhogg last night using the incredibly slow messaging system was an absolute pain. I'd get a notification but see no new message, have to exit, then go to messages instead to see the text load a full minute later. I really wish it were all contained in a snappy wee overlay instead of the home menu too.

When does The Last of Us stop being crap? I keep meaning to go back to it but I just can't be bothered because the first few hours were really bad. I assume it must get better for everyone to love it so much?

I just reached the "LOL FETCH QUEST" bit to get a car. How much longer before it picks up?

Stick with it..... :) It does pick up after this. Think I found this a bit tedious too....

I hated the beginning, the combat is awful, I have zero patience for stealth, but I loved the world, story and characters. I started again, put the difficulty on Easy and am really enjoying it now. Stick with it.

+1

Indeed, as a champion of never dealing with Sony I am fully with you - i wonder if the shops will just do the 'fix' rather than swap out, i suspect another good reason for buying from Amazon would be you could swap it out without any quibble.

Damn, thanks for the feedback guys. The screw thing isn't so much that there's a screw that flies out and I have to fix it, it's just one of the recommended fixes for the disc ejecting. What happens is that it gets stuck in a loop of ejecting the disc (even if there isn't one in there). When it first happened I thought I needed to send it back to Amazon where I bought it but after a quick search to see if it was a known issue I got a lot of results and people saying it's fixed by removing the power and rebooting, or if that doesn't fix it then you remove the plastic cover and turn a particular screw a bit. It has happened maybe 4 times or so, but most of my games are digital so I don't use the drive much.

Common or not you guys are right that it shouldn't be happening at all, I just didn't want the hassle of sending it off, getting a replacement and having the same thing happen again. It's like I just expect to have to put up with broken shit at this point. Anyway, if it happens again I'll send it off.

Don't stick with it, the gameplay is incredibly sub par. I gave up about halfway in and swapped controls to youtube mode. Look up 'Last of us Movie' on youtube and just watch the thing - the accolades are for the story, not how it plays. Saves a hell of a lot of time too, turning a 16 hour game into a 3 hour one with all the fat cut out.

I fully expect negs for this given all those 'best game ever I was literally really really sad in places' accolades it somehow picked up, but the gameplay aspect of TLOU was a complete turnoff for me.

If you want a great stealth game, I'd recommend Splinter Cell Blacklist which was sadly overlooked by everyone, or Ground Zeroes which is £7.50 on PSN right now.

More maintenance on Monday from 6pm till midnight

http://uk.playstation.com/psnmaintenance/

Yay

Damn you to hell Sony, I was planning to create a shitload of PSN accounts and make all my store purchases for the year during that 6 hour period. I guess Christmas is cancelled . I suppose I'll have to play some online games during the downtime instead.

Can anyone confirm whether a recent PS4 update has improved DVD playback at all? I only ask because I hadn't put the thing on for a while, and just having done so now am rather startled to see a huge improvement from what I remember.

Admittedly, it might just be me, but it does look so much better!

In news that probably surprises no one: Sony won the October NPD for a ten month streak.

Next up: GTA V bundles. November numbers will be huge.

November is going to be massive. I think Xbox have got the month locked down though. It's recently had a 50 dollar price cut, is coming bundled with two games and has just had the amazingly good value and much loved Master Chief Collection released for it. Of course the GTA5 & Last Of Us bundle is a great PS4 offering too, but I think MS are going all out this month to win the November NPD.
