PlayStation 4 Console Thread

This is a really vague question, but what are second hand games generally going for now? Gamestop barely knock 5 bucks off, but my favorite book shop has a few games for $35, which is quite a bit below the $59 that they are everywhere new.

So I've had my first experience with a PS4 as my brother has just got one. Only been playing Diablo 3 so far, which is OK but hardly a looker or pushing the system at all. He's got Shadow of Mordor though, so I've have a look at that later.

The controller is a much, much better (as everybody says) so it's better for that alone. Be interested to have a crack at an FPS on it though.

I thought that when I got Diablo so booted up the 360 demo to compare it and ita miles apart, same for Trine 2.

I've been a staunch Sony/PS4 advocate since the big reveal in 2013 and have loved the past year of gaming on the machine. Even with the regular outages I managed to keep smiley faced and positive and loving it.

But the Driveclub debacle coupled with the very mixed opinions on it as a game when it does work really got me worried. Forza Horizon 2 looked so tasty and was one of a few games that tempted me towards an Xbone, and now there's no near alternative on PS4.

Chuck in the relentless issues with PSN and the clearly second rate online experience and I've moved from being predominantly online to pretty much single player. Constant connectivity issues - whether they're on a game basis or platform basis - and seriously undermine my confidence in the system as a whole.

Now I look to the really interesting and positively received experiences the Xbone is getting with Sunset Overdrive, MS' ability to hit a deadline and how they've improved the platform and the OS since launch. Sony have spent their time fixing bugs, adding features they promised 18 months ago and botching the roll out again.

It's scary, as a consumer, to own what is seemingly a more poweful but poorly out together platform that's reliant on inferior online services and software support.

I'm not sure what'll happen in the long run in terms of broader confidence, on going sales and all that, but I know that as an owner I don't have that warm afterglow anymore. I can easily see me getting an Xbone by the end of next year and shifting to that as my primary online gaming platform. I'm not sure what place the PS4 has in that equation.

On another note, I finished First Light this morning. Loved it from start to finish. The challenge structure will keep me coming back as well.

Such is the delicious conflict of owning this console at the moment.

The Crew is out shortly.

Amazing that your experience is so different than mine.

You've moved from multiplayer to single player because you can't get online?

Seriously suggest you have your broadband checked because apart from the PSN maintenance days there's only been one night i couldn't play multiplayer.

Basically i'm saying i don't believe you.

But you'll believe someone who says that PSN is so bad he's had to switch from playing predominantly multiplayer to single player?

Sure, ok.

Apart from when there is (all too frequent) scheduled maintenance and when 2.0 hit, PSN has been fine for me 99% of the time. The hype over it's reliability is seriously hyperbolic.

Except it's not, maybe you don't play online much but just read the PSN thread for the past few months and there are multiple down times not related to maintenance.

Is it down enough to make online play unplayable as one poster has suggested, nope but it is down enough that it is an issue for a service we are paying for.

To be fair to PSN it's been rock solid for me over the last year bar the DDoS attacks and the maintenance days.

The only thing that's been unreliable is Driveclub and the problems with that aren't PSN - just pish code by the devs.

You're extrapolating from what I said and reaching your own conclusions. I forgot this is an internet forum and that I'd have to explain to the nth degree though.

Le sigh.

There have been enough occurrences of limited connectivity, outages, monthly maintenance and game specific issues on the platform that I've become far less focused on playing online than I was before owning a PS4. The vast majority of my gaming time this year has been spent playing in single player.

This is a direct result of me not being able to be certain whether or not I can play online when I have gaming time - something which is relatively limited for me as a parent and husband. It's fast become safer to assume that this evening I shall play, say, The Last Of Us, than Destiny because I know the former will be there.

This has come about as a result of:

- connectivity issues with Pool Nation's servers

- connectivity issues with UbiSofts servers flashing UK constantly when playing ACIV or Watch Dogs.

- the Destiny beta being a bit of a fucking nightmare in how it was rolled out

- ditto the Destiny launch

- monthly maintenance that takes the system offline, including over bank holidays this summer

- ad hoc downtime due to DDOS attacks _ at least 2 or 3 weekends that I can recall off the top of my head

- the Driveclub debacle

That's plenty if downtime, interruptions and issues which, when married up with relatively infrequent OS updates (the latest being broken), two sets of thumbsticks wearing, the relative silence on Sony's part, the continued waiting for feature promised 18 months ago and the delays to their exclusives...well, no need to detail it any more.

Like I said, it's a host of factors contributing to a change in my gaming habits and a broader sense that maybe this horse isn't everything I thought it would be.

I just rebooted my router as well, and it hasn't made me feel any better.

Complete hyperbole rubbish as usual from you regarding PSN. Its down so often that you have 500 hours of BF4 in 10 months, an average of 2 hours per day and that's fitted around a family. Speaks for its self. Totally unreliable and always down, certainly looks that way.

99% of the time playing online is no different from Live. Messaging is completely useless but actual online play is fine the vast majority of the time. In almost a year there has been maybe half a dozen times I have been unable to get online and the longest time span during that was about 3 hours.

Perception is reality.

12 months ago many perceived MS to be the epitome of everything they didn't want gaming to be and Sony the white knights of our pastime.

That's shifted and continues shifting - with every minute of scheduled downtime, botched release, poor store update or game delay.

What was wrong with the destiny launch? It actually went pretty smoothly in comparison to most online shooters (regardless of platform - see Battlefield games which have nothing to do with PSN).

PSN is not as good or as stable as Xbox Live, and there are a lot more outages, but for the most part it works (for me - I don't have time to pop on it everyday though). It's not good enough for a paid service (although for me personally, I always paid for ps plus for the insane value with the free games) but there is defo some hyperbole about the ability to play online.

Definitely recall connectivity problems with Destiny. I managed to preload is well enough, which was good, but recall issues connecting in the first couple of weeks.

And you're right, of course. As a consumer it's too easy to assign the blame for issues on a platform holder rather than the publisher.

I'm not sure if you're accusing me of hyperbole or not - I've certainly not banged a drum about it at all though, I'm just stating how I feel right now about the platform. It's anecdotal, it's entirely what I perceive it to be and I'm not sure how else to quantify or qualify it really.

I worried about the situation Pele described before the destiny launch - my gaming can be limited due to family stuff and I didn't want the hassle of if I could grab a few hours to play but the service wasn't up.

As such I got an Xbox One. The downside is though that the pool of players for Destiny is tiny compared to the PS4 although a good group has started to pull together recently, hopefully this will lead to being able to get some raiding done on a semi regular basis.

It wasn't about you but some recent application of things like the drive club disaster panning into the whole network being seen the same way.
