PlayStation 4 Console Thread

That site has Live down for all bar three days in September. It clearly wasn't for the overwhelming majority but then neither is PSN down every day.

The difference between services is undeniable. Not sure what point you're trying to make here? That they're comparably poor?

Unless I'm mistaken, they don't have a maintenance day every month,

Yes, sometimes they have both a maintenance day and a random outage: like this month,

http://uk.playstation.com/psn/support/forums/ - a clear sign of a well functioning service.

I'm holding off updating till they sort themselves out.

(I've had a couple of minor xbox one problems in the last month - at one point the friends and activities feed went down for a day - but the remainder of the service was stable, and being unable to simply authenticate would be a hilarious failure of Microsoft Passport: the kind of failure that when it happens is front page news on every tech website, because it means azure has gone down. The two services aren't even vaguely comparable, but that's not that surprising.)

The real problem is that Sony's paid for service is noticeably worse than every other paid for online service I use - both in terms of planned downtime, and in terms of unplanned downtime, during peak hours. Hell, even now tv seems to be better at the moment, and it's shockingly bad.

If Amazon video, netflix, spotify, passport, Google, etc. went down as often, I'd hope not to find people saying "it doesn't really happen, it doesn't happen that often,.l"

I have had a ps4 since jan/feb and over 500 hours of BF4 and some time on other games, more down time than in more than 10 years of xbox live.

Party chat is fucked, in one destiny game we (some mukkers) had more drop out of chats in that 2 hour session than i had in 10 years of xbox live.

I will not even mention all the other PSN issues such as the shop and maintenance but for a system to have more issues in under a years worth of play compared to over 10 years of live experience is not an exaggeration in any way at all.

Have a look at PSN down detector, it is basically down for people roughly 7 days a week at the moment for some period and has been for months - it is a totally fucked system and deserves nothing but disdain.

Vote with your wallet then, Nothing will change until you do.

Unfortunately I get the impression that wouldn't change a thing as there seem to be alot of people who are happy to put up with the problems and even go back for more even when having a terrible experience like that Timmo thread suggests. Sony don't have any reason to change anything at the moment because the userbase is complacent.

Sony seem to have a grip on this one even though they are offering a worse experience in exclusive content, system updates, UI and online infrastructure. You'll just have to ride it out until they stop using the profits to prop up the rest of the company and start investing it back in the Playstation division again.

I put the console in rest mode last night. Woke up this morning and the orange light was rapidly flashing on and off which I've never seen before. Didn't have time to check it out. Should I be worried?

It means it didn't enter Rest Mode properly and will need a hard reboot to turn back on. A rebuild of the database should fix it, you just need to boot into safe mode.

Yeah, the flashing orange thing's happened twice to me since the update. Hold power for a while to reset, it'll tell you it wasn't powered off properly once it restarts.

Gyugh.

In other news, the share feature's really pretty cool. The region locking is a big pile of arse though - tried to share a look at Yakuza Ishin with a friend of mine last night and it both blocks him out and fails to tell me as such. This would make sense IF THE GAMES WERE REGION LOCKED IN THE FIRST PLACE*.

*No it wouldn't. Fuck region locking.

Is it locked for both kinds of Share Play? So, letting him play your game, AND letting him play your game as player two alongside you? I can kind of see how the second one might not work if your game is searching for people who are signed up to Region X's PS+ because his account wouldn't be tagged properly. You don't need PS+ for the first one though so maybe that still works?

Probably not, but oh well. I guess I won't be Share Playing much

Turn off standby USB power in the settings and Rest mode will work fine.

Problem is that I turn off, plug in a controller and return to one that's nice and charged. I also charge 360 controllers via the PS4, so it's an inconvenient workaround.

Hmm, it's worth a try. It's all new at the moment, but the first one's definitely a fail (though he also had issues connecting to my UK Ground Zeroes - kept dropping). Could workaround via signing in with overseas accounts (everyone has one for the US and JP markets too, right?) but it's a bit of a pain as opposed to... y'know, just playing.

Also, if both accounts have to be the same region that rules out PS+ unless you're willing to pay for it in sub accounts too. Man. Man!

Well, no, you only need one active PS+ sub on a PS4 for all the accounts on that console to get PS+ features, so non-UK accounts should have Plus access just like your UK one.

the 360 charges my venom batteries, via usb, even when it's off-off.

It's probably down to practical considerations. As I understand it, Share Play works by turning your PS4 into a server, so it stands to reason that a UK based PS4 is going to offer a shit streaming experience to anybody outside of Europe, so Sony probably blocked that possibility, as the experience would be a poor representation of the service.

From the accounts I've read though, it does seem to work really well for a lot of people.

You can get around the region locking by joining the share play with an account from the region the game was bought.

I hosted FIFA 15 on my UK account (was bought from the US store) and if my mate logged on with his US account it worked. It's region locked if he joins with his UK account.

Simple workaround that... Works :)

How was the experience lag wise?

I *guess* you could replicate the share fuction by doing twitch streaming, though a little thing saying 'oh, you're not in the same region it looks like. Your experience could be gash due to lag' sounds like a way better way to deal with it - and of course, we're in the same country but just using an import title.

SeanR: Really? That is handy - thanks for letting me know!

Space: Ditto - though I had to grab plus on my JP account before I could find GGXrd's demo, and individual profiles have plus icons. I'll check it out later.

Nope, I've never had that enabled and even so, since the update my PS4 has twice got stuck in the pulsing-orange-light-won't-go-into-rest-mode state, requiring I pull the plug from the mains (even holding down the power button for a couple of minutes wouldn't switch it off, or back on again). To try to fix it I've ended up booting into safe mode, redownloading and installing the update again, rebuilding the database, and turning off all HDMI-CEC functionality. If that doesn't sort the problem out I'll just have to switch the thing completely off when I'm not using it.

Interesting to learn of peoples experiences with the Firmware 2.0 update. Decided to leave my PS4 alone until this is all fixed.

Not quite sure how it's effecting some users and not others though hardware is pretty much the same right... hmmmm.

Anyway really hope Sony start investing more into PSN as this service is going to get progressively worse as new owners start to join in....

Think to some degree Sony have been a victim of their own success.

Think they must've borrowed Destiny's RNG. Mine updated without any problems but I'm not sure "database rebuilds" should have any place in console gaming.
