PlayStation 4 Console Thread

Killzone had its moments but I could only really recommend it to someone if their three favourite games to play are:

- Am I crouching or standing? (see also: Bioshock)

- Where do I go next and why isn't my objective waypoint working?

- Do any of the 15 corridors I could go down at this point not end in a dead-end?

True that, although judging from how non-rare the platinum trophy ( :( ) is I'm sure quite a few people have played it. I've not played Bastion so can't compare, but apparently the same smooth narrator is in both. The chatty broadsword in Transistor got on my tits at first but by the end of the game you've grown to admire him, and there are some nice twists and turns throughout the minimalist plot. With any luck it will be on PS+ in the near future; it definitely deserves to be played.

EDIT: In answer to TTK

I really really liked the narrator in Bastion. Unfortunately, that was the only thing I liked in Bastion.

For what it's worth I'm much the same but really enjoyed Transistor. The combat is the big differentiator, being more akin to Valkyria Chronicles than an action game.

I imagine it'll be discounted around Christmas, so hopefully more people will give it a shot.

I've joined the PS4 fammy fam. A S$100 trade-in for a dead Wii by Sony at the GameStart (http://www.gamestart.asia) event this weekend was irresistible.

It's LOVELY firing up a new console and immediately being greeted with a big list of quality download games that are available at no extra cost due to your PS+ subscription. Good job I queued them from my PS3 account!

Today? Destiny.

Killzone had an awful but pretty single player, and a multiplayer that was sorta broken but also incredibly fun. If spawn camping puts you off, stay away - if chucking a turret down facing their base (or at the base of a flight of stairs so it shoots them in the back as they run past) turns you on, dive right in.

I love that shit, but I'm an evil bastard. I may not be able to aim right, but when it comes to setting horrible, awful traps I excel.

I nearly got permabanned for trying to warn people that Killzone was pish on the eve of the PS4 launch when I posted Angry Joe's 6/10 video review.

It's a good review which details both the good and the bad. In particular it shows him getting frustrated at the frustrating bits.

Got Killzone with my PS4. Its pretty eye candy. Never finished it because it just got tedious - story was a muddled mess and it felt more like a tick box FPS game. On a plus point it only cost me £20 IIRC. Personally wouldn't bother with it now and just grab Destiny. Unless you are a fan of the Killzone series.

Saying all that is cheap thrills these days and I might actually get back to it at some point. Think one of my major sticking points at the time was the saving system if you died during a level you pretty much had to go back to the beginning which was a bit of a shock coming from checkpoint systems that are pretty much standard on these types of games these days. This was patched though I think but not played it for a long while now. The zip wire and OWL thing were nice touches I guess. I've played a lot worse TBH.

One thing I did notice whilst the graphics were shiny little details were missing for example no reflections of your character when walking up to glass surfaced objects. Not a massive thing but this is the next gen and kind of expected more on the shiny graphics with all that extra power. Just the graphics whore in me noticing these things though....

Nah it's shite - when games 10 years older offer more innovation and do combat better now there are no excuses for such mediocrity.

It is worse than perfect dark zero and that was a shit launch game too!

But they don't. Maybe one or two stand-out shooters from ten years ago do, but it's largely a genre of mediocrity into which Killzone slips just fine. It looks fantastic too.

Spot on. It's narrative is dysfunctional, its characters underdeveloped and level design archaic. It is, however, very pretty.

Anyone wanting a FPS that's a bit of a throwback in terms of design, but done well and in a compelling way, would be much better off buying Wolfenstein.

A man calling himself "Angry Joe" gets frustrated. Wow. That won't be staged at all then, totally legit.

I enjoyed Killzone 2 & 3 in both single and multiplayer. Shadow Fall failed to scratch either itch so I can't even go along with the 'if you're a fan of the series' line.

Enjoyed Killzone 2 campaign it was good fun. Well other than that silly game boss end bit... LOL.

I've enjoyed the Vita version but it seems its pretty shite even for a tenner. Whats Watch Dogs like?

that was £22 i think at CEX. i remember all the fuss about it not looking like the initial reveal. Now the dust has settled so to speak whats the general opinion for £22

Killzone is a mixed bag. Excellent presentation in terms of looks, style and, especially, music. Got a real nice hard sci-fi feel. There are some excellent levels too but they are mixed up with the same old cover/spawn gameplay that was in the first Killzone back on PS2.

I genuinely rate kill zone as the worst game I ever played. I couldn't tell you a single thing about the story, the shooting is horrible, it's easy to get lost as the markers are borked, it looks fairly nice but that's about it. The touch pad use and that little robot are pure gimmick too
