PlayStation 4 Console Thread

I think the point is that you can 'suspend' your game literally at the point you choose on Vita and then resume later from that exact point. You can't do that on PS4 from what I understand.

You can, you just can't go into standby.

Actually, having to drop everything when the kids wake up from their afternoon nap would make a suspend feature really useful. As it is, I'm either flapping around for a save point, or playing it safe and not doing anything in game that'll take too long.

Now you mention it, I found myself in a situation the other day whilst playing Last of Us, when I needed to save but our puppy started chewing everything in sight to get my attention.

Just press the PS button which stops the game dead and leave it on the dashboard until you're ready to go again?

Or you could just hit the home button, leaving the machine on. It's not ideal but unlike the Vita you won't run the battery down.

too slow!

It's still a pain if you have to leave the console running for hours until you return, and then you've still got to sort out a save point, which is game dependent. Also, if you have power-saving enabled it'll shut itself down after N minutes of 'inactivity' won't it?

TBH, it's a great example of Sony announcing something too early that they've subsequently failed to deliver. There's a simple solution; don't announce features that you're not confident you can implement or deliver.

Yeah it's not an ideal solution and no different to just pausing the game in generations past tbh. It'll be a shame if they can't get it working because it's a very useful feature, and one that people expect these days thanks to smartphones and tablets. Am i right in thinking this is a feature Xbox One already has?

I don't get the big deal behind stop/resume? It's great on the vita due to the pick up and play nature or when you might need to get off a bus / plane (or most usefully when the battery dies halfway through round 15 of an 18 hole Everybody's Golf tourney). With how quick the new generation of consoles boot up from powered off I really don't get the frothing demand for a feature that might save you 60 seconds or so of your life, and add more money to your electric bill

There's no need for stop/resume to add a penny to your electrical bill if they implement it right.

Save the state of everything in volatile memory to the hard drive, and then shut-down. It's what Windows does when you place it into "hibernate". Then when it resumes everything continues as if the shut down had never taken place.

Suspend/resume on the Vita uses battery power IIRC, so it's not actually doing the same thing. This may be why Sony is finding it more difficult to implement on the PS4.

MS have the advantage of their OS experience, which is presumably why it's been a long-standing feature of the Xbox One.

Sony's PS4 reveal would have been very short if they only announced the features that were in the console today.

"We have this revolutionary new console which will change the way you play games! What does it do? Well, you can play games on it. And it has Netflix."

:) Not a whole lot of feature updates there really. Change colours of the home screen? Not sure why that took so long to develop LOL. I notice you can't actually copy mp3 files over to the HDD and have to play from a stick inserted... wonder why this is? Probably to stop hackers. We might actually get to the lofty heights at some point of doing what the PS3 does media wise at some point... Also where is the suspend and resume gaming feature? Still can't complain....

This is what I was thinking of. Won't save you in the event of surprise power cut of course.

I agree, pitiful really since it's near enough a year since launch.

Yup since day one. It's really useful.

I think Remote Play has already proven you wrong.

If that's in reply to me, it hasn't proven anything. Just take a look in the Vita thread at the latest posts. Remote Play is brilliant when it works, I'm one of the lucky ones, but it seems to do the complete opposite for 50% of the people trying it and it's just a mess.
