PlayStation 4 Console Thread

I'd have thought someone would design a hub that goes around the side or back with a nice discrete ribbon cable that hides in the groove to plug in the front.

I agree, i would buy one so i don't have to have stupid usb leads poking out the front - it is baffling why Sony didn't put any ports on the rear!

Because they'd lose one of their selling points for the inevitable tweaked console design in a year or two.

Doubt it. Adding more USB would push the manufacturing cost up for no real reason.

They actually went the other way with PS3. The original had ports on the back as well as the ones on the front.

I stuck £50 on my PSN account using their paypal offer and shortly after got a £10 voucher to redeem. Today I had another email telling me that I had a code to redeem on the store although it didn't tell me what for, redeeming it gave me another £10! Bargain, PSN being a bit broken has worked in my favour this time and I'm counting this as a Driveclub discount.

Same here, I just assumed that it hadn't registered the first time though!

I got a second voucher of them today as well.

I don't think it's been mentioned. The USB mp3 player and remote play type sharing seem to be the main things they've been on about, along with custom background colours.

Shame there's no DLNA support, I wish Plex would get round to making a proper PS4 client. I'd certainly buy it.

A quick run down of 2.0's key features:

USB Music Player:

PS4 owners can play their own music in the background while playing a game using USB Music Player*. After inserting a USB stick loaded with music into the PS4, a new option for USB Music Player will appear. Supported filename extensions include MP3, MP4, M4A, and 3GP.

Change colors:

In addition to the ability to add a theme, PS4 owners can also change the background of the home screen from light blue to one of seven new colors: gold, blue, red, green, purple, pink, and gray.

Players You May Know:

PS4 will now suggest players you may know as potential friends in the ‘What’s New’ section.

Enhancements to Live Broadcasting:

Masamune brings a variety of improvements to live broadcasting on PS4. In the Live From PlayStation app, PS4 owners can now select a Featured channel, which includes official broadcasts from PlayStation, broadcasts from people on a players friend list, and any game channel that the player has followed. Additionally, Live From PlayStation now has filters for searching broadcasts on a specific game, as well as support for archived broadcasts.

Content Area and Library:

PS4’s Content Area, which shows the latest games and apps a PS4 owner has used, has been redesigned to help make it easier to quickly find and access content. It now shows 15 of a player’s most used apps or games, and additional items will be added to a player’s Library. The Library on PS4 has improved filter and sort functions to help organize contented by type (game / app / TV & video), name (a – z or z – a), recently used, or install date.

Enhanced Voice Commands:

The ability to control PS4 using voice has been improved. Players can now say ‘PlayStation’ to begin commands, and ‘All Commands,’ to see a list of all voice command options available. New voice commands were added for live broadcasting, including “Start broadcast,” “End broadcast,” and “Find face.”

Add To Library:

The monthly free PlayStation Plus games will have an ‘Add to Library’ button in the PlayStation Store. This button will add a game to a PS4 owner’s library without downloading it – saving space on their hard drive.

Youtube:

Upload ability and dedicated app.

Share Play:

When you play a game on the PS4, it’s always encoding that to video in the background. And by using the SHARE feature, you can broadcast that video. Using this feature, you can directly send the video to a friend that you select, instead of sending it to a service provider such as NICONICO.

In doing this, controller input for the game running on your PS4 can be performed by another PS4. You turn your PS4 into a server and let others play your games, this is “Share Play.”

I hadn't really realised what a big deal Share Play actually is, but as it's been confirmed to work on all PS4 games, it's a genuinely cool feature. Your guest gets 60 mins of access to any game you share with them, pretty much leaves the need for demos stone dead.

Regarding the suspend resume feature Yoshida said this in July.

The development team that handles the system software is the most disappointed by the fact that it hasnt been implemented yet. And so, we keep developing it doing our best. Its a fact that we havent yet done what we hoped to achieve, but continue to develop whilst thinking We can do this. Even if were not yet able to announce when itll be released.

We have a list of the features in development and the priorities we aim to achieve with each step of the development process, and so we will continue to gradually offer software updates as soon as we can. We want people to continue to think This is interesting. For example we wanted to improve to the share feature, and then there are other features that people are demanding, such as enabling the sharing of media (DLNA) and the use of MP3.

[...]

The developers of the system software are always taking feedback in consideration as we decide what features should be implemented in the PS4.

Even Sony hopes.....

What's strange is, the Vita handles it with such aplomb. Say what you will about the bubbles, but that OS is rock solid. I got a new Android phone recently, and was surprised how none of the games stayed in memory, or how generally slow it was to operate vs the Vita:

People give Sony shit about their software, but the team behind the Vita OS showed they have some great people behind the scenes. Given that, I really don't know why they seem to be struggling to implement some features in the PS4 OS. I guess it's a more powerful system which brings with it fresh challenges, but still, I look at that gif and wonder what the problem is.

I don't get the big deal behind stop/resume? It's great on the vita due to the pick up and play nature or when you might need to get off a bus / plane (or most usefully when the battery dies halfway through round 15 of an 18 hole Everybody's Golf tourney). With how quick the new generation of consoles boot up from powered off I really don't get the frothing demand for a feature that might save you 60 seconds or so of your life, and add more money to your electric bill
