PlayStation 4 Console Thread

Yeah, mine flies along, apart from updating the recent goings on stuff, which takes a few seconds. In fact, that's the only place adverts seem to appear, and they're occasionally useful (e.g., for reminding you the latest PS+ games are out).

There's a ton of good deals around right now. Have a look on hotukdeals seems to be a new one every day. There's this today - PS4 + FIFA 15 + Minecraft for £310 http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/playstation-4-fifa-15-minecraft-310-using-code-hmv-ie-2021598

Cheers.

I've got a job interview on Thursday and I've decided if I get the job i'm going to celebrate with buying it and if I don't get the job, I'm going to buy one to drown my sorrows ;)

I assumed he meant from stand by? Why would anyone power down completely?

Electricity usage, sometimes it's days even a week or two before I play it, why would I want it on standby for all that time, especially when it takes the same amount of time to boot up as far as I can tell

I think the amount of friends might have an affect on how your PS4 responds, I'm sure of it.

In the evenings, once there is 40-50 friends online, my PS4 will not display the friends list, and the icons for the games disappear and show circular logos, which can't be clicked on to load anything even if you know what games they are. Kerraig has experienced the same, and we both have 100+ friends on our lists. I know others I've played with online who say the same thing.

After getting an Xbox One last week I think the PS4 OS is much quicker to respond. I've had lots of freezing and crashes on X1 already. It just feels slow and clunky to navigate and type in compared to PS4. It does look prettier in terms of imaging but still.

The PS4 UI works fine for me, but it's a bit drab. I don't like how it's a long, ever shifting list of stuff, I don't like that I can't just pin Netflix to the top bar (because honestly, who cares about the rest of the stuff in the TV category) and I don't like how my games are all spread out (I know it's based on things last used). The PS3 UI wasn't great but at least it grouped things in a logical, categorised way.

It's not a big distinction but GT has always been "Cars" and Forza "Motorsport". It's right there in the name.

So weirdly, GT would actually suit some kind of "Horizon" style game better than Forza would.

I'd love to see it actually, they could set it in Asia, have some good hills in the North West hosting drift events, cities for proper street racing etc. It could actually be really bloody good. It'd also give them more sales and thus more resources to update decade old car models etc.

GT Horizon would also give more scope for emphasising the cultural differences from Forza's US centric view. It'd probably be a lot more about modding than Forza Horizon is.

Damnit, now I want to play that.

Yeah I'd rather it be more like the Wii even with its channels. Adding in motion controls for curser functionality to select them would be good too as the DS4 is now really, really good at that.

I actually think the PS3 has a cleaner more functional dash but obviously PS4 is way faster.

Best thing about it (for me) is being able to listen to Music Unlimited whilst playing games etc. I love their game specific playlists too. If PS+ came with MU as standard it would be the most awesome thing ever. It's quite pricey at the moment!

I've got 460 odd on my friends list, and it's pretty bad now. Somebody upthread said rebuilding the PS4 database helped. Anyone bothered to do this? Did it help?

I was thinking of giving it a go, and thanks to whoever posted it, but given that the messaging, etc., is even worse on the app on my phone than on the PS4 I don't think the state of this DB is the issue.

Generally, I think the PS4 OS does it's job well. It's very basic and definitely needs improving but I don't have too many issues with speed. Then again I don't have a lot of friends or games on the respective lists just yet.

Mostly for me, it's the networking elements that slow it down on some occasions; loading friends lists/profile info/messages etc.

I'd like it to be a little more slick like the above. The sharing of videos in that add is pretty much seamless and it looks like you can view the videos in the What's New feed.

My What's New feed is currently telling me that person x has played Battlefield 4 3 times etc. Or that person y has used Sharefactory. It would be great if the output of sharefactory went to the same news feed.

I like the contrast between Sony and MS, can see the pro's and cons of both approaches. I think Sony could do with just a little more around the social thing of sharing videos and photos.

Admittedly, it'd suck quite a lot without Kinect. You've got the pinning functionality, but so much is based around voice recognition that I wonder if a later dash update will add headset support?

You know you can already operate the PS4 UI with voice commands right? Just say "playstation", the game name to highlight it, then say "start".

If someone shares a video or screenshot it goes into the News Feed to watch. I've endured Shimmyhill's Bro-ttlefield compilations clogging up my feed so why you get out of it I don't know.

:( I'll have to look into that. Haven't seen a single video clip.

Yes. It doesn't work anywhere near as well or consistently, and certainly doesn't work when there's a lot of background noise (like a game playing) - nb. using the camera.

Targeted marketing, you loves it :P

I can confirm that the UI is slow as treacle these days, sending out party requests takes longer than turning a 360 on and doing the same - it used to be nippy but i do have a fair few friends on there so maybe it is part of it. The whole UI is snappy until you do anything connected, i assume it is all part of PSN being shite so do not see any OS update resolving that any time soon :(

That's weird.

Not if you grew up in the 70s where almost every TV ad break seemingly included a Public Information Film warning you that you'd burn to death if you so much as left a plug within six feet of a socket overnight. It's a result of this sort of thing that I have twenty eight fire extinguishers in the house and wear a life-vest to bed, just in case...
