PlayStation 4 Console Thread

I think i'm finally at the stage where I'm going to jump in and buy one soon. Part of me though is thinking I should wait another month or so and see what bundles are released or if there will be a price war which will bring it down a bit.

There aren't any big games between now and Christmas I don't think, so I doubt there will be any significant bundles. I doubt they'll drop in price, either. Why should they? They're selling out in places and beating Xbox something like 3:1 in most territories. They have literally no need to drop the price.

There's a ton of good deals around right now. Have a look on hotukdeals seems to be a new one every day. There's this today - PS4 + FIFA 15 + Minecraft for £310 http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/playstation-4-fifa-15-minecraft-310-using-code-hmv-ie-2021598

Having spent the afternoon playing on a Bone, literally the only things the PS4 has going for it at the moment are:

- a slightly higher resolution in most games, that I'm now too old to see when sitting on the sofa; :-(

- BBC iPlayer;

- slighty more PS+ games;

- mind share, which is ** important **.

Otherwise I'm quite shocked at just how much functionality is broken or whose implementation pales in comparison with its main competition one year in. I mean, it's going to be my multi-platform console of choice, but I think only because that's where everyone else is playing...

You'll need to explain what functionality is broken because i haven't had a single problem in either single or multiplayer.

What exactly doesn't work?

Basically, if you want the barest bones OS then I suppose it's ok. Except that's its still slow and things aren't easy to discover.

But it's difficult to really explain this without looking like it's a flame war: the two OSs are like night and day - one is just more functional than the other:

- for example: both have activity feeds; only one automatically stores screenshots/videos of key moments in your game to fill the activity feed with something interesting;

- both have video sharing; only one directly populates the video upload/sharing feature with curated and friends feeds;

- both allow some level of task switching; one just does it, and then resumes where you left off, the other "do you wish to suspend this, kill this?": it's not even as though they're exposing much more memory to the underlying games...

Someone obviously decided that the PS4 needed the sharing feature: they then didn't take that and run with it to its logical conclusion in the same way that the same people behind the Bone did. If you apply the same principle to every OS decision you'd start to see where I'm coming from..

Honestly, if you'd got the Bone OS on the PS4's hardware + microphone/camera, minus the TV functionality you don't care about, it'd be *great*.

Does the Bone still take half an hour to load in the dashboard? I ended up cutting my internet connection on the 360 as a result.

I've played with one for a few days, but it was offline. Ha ha! In your face, old Microsoft, and screw your always online plan from back in the day.

I wonder what 2.0 will bring. Hopefully suspend/resume from standby at the very least.

Direct YouTube uploads is the one I want.

But the big one I want is searchable / filterable download lists across all systems.

:D Seems pretty quick to me. Everything is there from the off.

ah yes, Youtube sharing would be nice.

Honestly, this is a major plus over the older 360 for me. It sounds minor, but that wait drove me insane. It's also not something I heard repeated often, but every time I booted it up I'd be waiting about 40 seconds. Took over a minute once, just to load their ads in on the dash.

I'll be getting a Bone eventually, but probably once all the cross gen garbage is behind us / Sunset Overdrive blows my face off with colour. Both systems have way too many remasters, or games that are made to exist on older hardware too. Forza and KI definitely appeal. It's a shame that MS' old management went crazy and shit the bed with all that 'YOU CAN WATCH YOUR TV ON IT, YEEEEAH, BASEBALL' garbage from E3 past. Phil Spencer's been doing good work, but it's a hell of a mess to clean up.

As for the PS4 - I really like mine. It doesn't exactly have an overflow of games right now, mind - at least not ones that I couldn't just get on the PC for way cheaper at launch, and I'm not much of a multi guy for the most part - and when I am, it's rarely with friends. Still, the Vita and PS4 combo is a damn good un.

It boots to dash far quicker than the PS4 does.

Not here it doesn't, PS4 trumps it from completely off my XB1 takes a loooong time to boot up, from standby however it's instant.

PS4 has been annoying me recently with friends list, friend requests and messages. Very buggy and slow.

This could just be down to recent PSN shakiness but it might be worth rebuilding your console's database. The only downside is that it'll reorder the flow of your apps, so the most recently used stuff won't be on the left.

To do this turn the machine off, not into standby. After the PS4's gone quiet hold on the power button for about 7 seconds until you hear a second beep. Plug in a DS4, press the PlayStation button and then choose the Rebuild Database option from safe mode.

I assumed he meant from stand by? Why would anyone power down completely?

Almost a year on and I'm still wildly in love with the PS4. I got a bad one first off, which was devstating and the control nubs started to go, so I got a £90 refund for the two and bought some £5 covers, but other than that it's been a great experience.

It boots up fast. Taking it off wireless and connecting it to Homeplugs has made that faster, particularly loading game artwork. The maintenance has been frustrating on just 2 occasions - the rest I've been absolutely fine with. I've really enjoyed pretty much ever game I've had on it. NBA 2K14 is my only misstep so far, the rest have been as enjoyable as they need to be for the price I've paid.

I purposefully lump multi format games in there too. MS have done little to endear themselves to me as a gamer, coming across as bullish and full of all the exuberances that were putting me off them at the end of the 360's life. Interestingly, it's also polluted my enjoyment of that console - my son plays on it but I haven't, not since the PS4 launched. I've played and completed a great variety of games this year - Wolfenstein, Infamous: SS, Destiny (campaign), Entwined, Valiant Hearts and more. I already have a pile of shame that's bigger than it should be, and most games in it look to be great quality.

Could it be better? Yes. YouTube support is critical - the process of exporting videos is a little painful (though ShareFactory is great to mess with) but the compression Facebook layers on to it is criminal. The dashboard is in need of folders. I can't really think of anything else.

I haven't, once, regretted my decision to get it at launch. I've had a great year with it. Equally, I haven't once regretted my decision to not get an Xbone, though Forza Horizon 2 has made me pine a little. I'm glad both exist, and I hope Sony do improve, and I recognise that MS may catch up and overtake them. I'll be over here, playing some awesome games, when they do.

"We want to make it very Gran Turismo. By that I mean it’s going to be a game that matches the very era that we live in, in 2015 or 2016."

Do you think he's hinting at open world? I'm not sure I could do another showroom grind-a-thon.
