Been wondering around London today and the whole place is plastered with Xbox One advertising. On the tube, on posters, on advertising screens. They are really blitzing it. Saw a long one before the movie I was watching too and did wonder if Sony are planning on the same next week.

Yeah thats the thing about the micro-economics of it all. Its all a bit unknown and vague. They said they would make it back after the sale of one game or a PS+ subscription.

Sounds roughly right, you'd expect them to be making at least $15 out of a launch game at full price.

The PS4 costs $381 to make if you add materials cost to assembly cost, so they make about $19 on each one sold. Of course you need to take into account the years of R&D and staff wages that went into making the thing a reality. Plus the cost of shipping it round the world, VAT in different territories etc.

Iconoclastic behaviour is not new.

Of course not, but I don't see how this equates. Destroying religious icons makes perfect sense to me, as a statement in opposition to the fixation of the Church on the accumulation of material wealth, say. Even in a broader context I can understand someone attacking a significant cultural icon, if that icon represented something about that culture they disliked. In each case a political statement is being made, where is the political statement here?

Even if there was a political intent here (which I'm pretty sure there isn't), I'd say it's hugely undermined by the fact that these people have presumably paid for the item they're destroying. It's hard to take someone's criticism seriously when they've just helped prop up whatever it is they're criticising.

I guess the internet has allowed anyone to achieve their 15 minutes of fame, but the form that that fame takes, being mentioned on Twitter or Facebook, makes the things people will do to get it all the more pathetic to me.

Giantbomb discussed this while doing their stream on Saturday, basically the ad money is probably not going to pay for the console even with a million views.

I imagine it probably would. I have a video that has made $182 after 407,000 views so around a million will probably pay for it.

I doubt they are doing this to try and break even though. Just desperate people who like attention even if it's people calling them idiots.

I suppose you make a lot of money on accessories. That's why the controllers are £50 etc.

I don't think you can necessarily say that or use rrp of accessories as any form of determination about profit/loss. Largely because of the retailer and distribution cuts. While they obviously make some form of profit on accessories, especially things like stands, you aren't going to suddenly recoup all costs overnight largely because most people won't bother with them or where possible will buy third party equivalents.

I don't think the people smashing a PS4 are doing it for attention (not mainly), otherwise they'd do it at home. The point is to do it in front of a queue of people. I guess it's meant to be an amazing zinger on those people queueing, except it doesn't really work unless people are buying hundreds and smashing them, in which case they're stopping the queuers from getting a PS4. When it's just one, it's like... well, that's one less PS4 in the world, who gives a fuck?

I really don't think they have the foresight to think about the money they'll make from. Especially as about a half-dozen probably get it on film so they can't even be sure everyone would see their video.

I really don't understand it, totally pathetic in my eyes and I certainly wouldn't send it on or re-tweet it or whatever even to state the fact I think it's pathetic. If I saw someone do it I'd just think he was an idiot. It's selfish and a bit reprehensible really and a shame that it even gets views and therefore some sort of recompense, unfortunately as a group of people, humans are a bit shit, it would be much nicer if he got double the views and money if he posted up a video of sending £400 off to the Typhoon appeal or something, or using his time to help out with charity or some shit. People are weird.
