PlayStation 4 Console Thread

Well the speed is an advantage but it's more that it saves you the hassle of having to start from scratch and redownload all your crap when you hit the 500Gb.

If you aren't bothered about redownloading stuff you probably aren't using anyway then it's fine. But if you are fine deleting stuff you aren't using then you must be fine with 500Gb.

Tell me about it :(

I'm adding everyone on the PS4 friends list today - expect an invite from morrius-psn (or something like that!)

Do you guys think we should dedicate certain nights to certain games? We could have a warframe night, a battlefield night, a NFS night, a blacklight night etc.

That is a great idea.

You can't backup to an external drive to do the upgrade? That's a bit shit.

I'd assumed the PS4 would have a similar option to backup all your stuff like the PS3 since the drive is swappable. I'm not rushing to change it anyway maybe once there are 1.5Tb or 2Tb 2.5" drives available it'll be worth it but another £80 to shave 20 secs off a load time seems excessive.

I don't understand this. Seems to me the only advantage of a 500GB drive would be the speed increase, which, yeah, probably isn't actually worth it.

That "guess what it is thing" above is:

an egg cup, with salt shaker. Head shaker more like.

So if I just buy basically any 2.5" 500GB or 1TB hybrid drive, and download 1.5 to a USB stick, I'm good for a day one upgrade?

any 9.5mm one, yeah (minimum SATAII though), not 500gb though .not worth it

The advantages of putting in a bigger drive than the built in 500GB one day one are that you won't have to worry about backing up/restoring/redownloading stuff if you upgrade later and possible speed advantages if you put in a better type of drive.

The disadvantage is that you might find that by the time you actually get to 500GB+ of stuff, prices will have dropped/better drives will be available.

It is bizarre how defensive people are over Knack, is it just because it's by Mark Cerny and therefore tied into the identity of the platform?

Literally no-one is claiming it's the new Mario.

But, and again I say this as someone who has spent time actually playing it, no way is it as bad as some of the reviews are saying.

Christ. So, it's fucked then. Pre-order cancel imminent (just the game, don't be silly).

Yeah and Assassins Creed was going to be my fallback, but that doesn't even run in the proper res, you have to wait for 1080p to eventually be patched in apparently.*

*Surprised how much of a free pass this we'll patch in resolution later thing is getting (see also CoD) given the cavalcade of GIFs news of Xbone games running under 1080p inspired.

Isn't it getting patched on Friday though?

I started playing BF4 campaign last night and it crashed to the dash during a cutscene, other than that it performed fine.

Gameplay wise, it feels like a current gen game with amazing textures. :)

Looking forward to multiplayer tonight.

Outside of a small number of borderline incompetent console ports like Dark Souls, I've never seen it happen in 20+ years of PC gaming. To be fair though, the main selling point of PC gaming is its customisability, so the resolution is never fixed to need a patch to increase it in the first place.

Patches to improve performance, however, are ten a penny.

Isn't 2K14 meant to be the basketball game of choice anyway?

Its the Sports game of choice!

NBA Live was always going to be poor in comparison, they've been out of touch for the last 3-4 years so at best it was going to be a decent starting point. However, it looks like its failed in that regard too which is a shame. NBA 2K would have benefitted from real competition.

If you've any interest in Basketball then 2K14 will be right up your street. Its a fantastic series and the next gen one looks to continue that too.

20 seconds is a substantial time saved, it's a much bigger thing than it sounds "on paper".

No point putting in another 500gb just because it's faster, but it's well worth considering a 1tb hybrid

Hopefully.

I've never actually heard of patching in higher resolution before this launch, at least not on consoles. PC games, is this a common thing your side of the great divide?

Not from devs, because PC games tend to be built to scale on varied hardware. Dark Souls and Deadly Premonition were locked to 720p because they were shitty ports and had to be "unlocked" by a third party fix.

It's not that, well it isn't for me anyway. I can tell it isn't a perfect game, not by any stretch of the imagination. It does however look a nice little mid-tier game. Now if there was a ton of choice and we were a few years into a generation, then I might consider leaving it until it drops in price, but with it being the only game of its type in this window, then it is one that has been on my list since I first saw it. One I can play nicely with my family and get enjoyment from.

I can identify with that. Some stuff is just a nice fun game to play with the kids and it doesn't have to be stellar as long as it's an enjoyable 30 minutes here and there.

Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars on PS3 is the perfect example of this for me. The kids love it and it's a fun little thing to faff around with.

I suppose the difference is that the PS4 will be capable of running those games in 1080p natively, while the X1 will not, better late than never is the phrase I believe.
