PlayStation 4 Console Thread

Official policy is all games have to be available to download. It works pretty much like Steam in that games are associated with your account so you can quite happily log into a mate's PS4 and play the game on it. Expect launch prices for DL games to be comically high though, as publishers don't want people DLing games instead of buying them on disc from their preferred retail partners. Because retail is lame.

download games appear to be rrp.

Just like this gen, cheap Psn cards will be handy for digital

Regarding Shopto. Not only are their prices are getting higher, but their website is so slow. Why does it take an age to load?

There website seems like it was built in the 90's. It needs a complete re-design.

In other news, I got an email after 11pm last night saying they'd taken payment for the PS4 :omg:

I'm probably over drawn now and have to get to the bank today to sort this out. I'd be mad but... Resogun, Killzone and Battlefield 4 are now defiantly mine

Going to probably pick up NFS around launch, sounds like there is a good few 'mukkers who are gonna be on it.

What's the deal with buying PS4 games for Download? Will all games be available at launch? Will it work the same sort of way as Steam?

I'm wondering if ordering/buying the physical disks are worth it for launch day or if I can just grab the games I want as and when I want to play them.

...or create a US PSN account as the US Digital prices are a lot cheaper. I've already bought Battlefield 4 for $59.99 (£37) and most other titles are that price too (Killzone, FIFA, NFS, AC). Just make sure you create an address in a state that pay no sales tax. I think I 'live' in Nevada. Pop me a PM Pants if you want any pointers.

Tested.com did a hard drive test, pitting the stock drive against a hybrid drive and an SSD.

The hybrid comes out on top, with the SSD only fractionally quicker for a much higher cost per gigabyte.

Boot
Default 25.67s
Hybrid 20.3s
SSD 19.5s

Knack Disc
Default 39.67s
Hybrid 33.67s
SSD 34s

Killzone Downloaded
Default 60s
Hybrid 42s
SSD 39s

Are you guys upgrading your hard drives straight away, or waiting until you actually need more space and hope prices go down in the meantime?

I've not looked at components for ages. Are HDDs even on their way down in price?

I think I just want one for the speed increase, not that fussed about the space. 500Gb is fine for me I think - I'll be deleting what I don't play and redownloading if/when I want to at a later date. Background downloading and a fast connection means that isn't an issue.

I think I'll try to get a hybrid drive in time for launch though.

You know, it just occurred to me. I've preordered three games (AC4, NFS, BF4) and I get Killzone with the system. But, I fucking hate changing discs. It feels so antiquated to me. I'm tempted to actually cancel those preorders and get the downloadable versions for gouge prices so I don't have to keep opening the AV cabinet.

I was going to say - and I don't mean this in a bad way - I can't see EDGE going to the London review event thing. Did you?

We didn't, no. Actually I don't think Sony did one over here. They did a big celeb-studded launch party with the OXO Tower takeover but no press event. They're a necessarily evil sometimes (with print lead times being what they are) but I can't imagine ever doing an entire launch line-up in three days or whatever the US press had to do.

This is my biggest problem with the system so far. My PC lives under the telly and I've got so used to switching games without having to get up off the sofa. It's especially annoying because it installs the entire disc, so even though Knack's gobbling up 39GB I still have to get up and put the disc in if I want to play it.

To whoever was talking about input lag in Remote Play, I played some Resogun in bed last night and got a new high score. Seems absolutely fine somehow.

Ah yeah, good point. Totally forgot about the speed increase

I'm the opposite with console games too Moz. I love the idea of a digital library on my PC. But for some reason, with a console, I like to have that little collection of games. Also, sliding a disc into the PS3 is some saucy shit yo.

Ahh oh, thanks muchly mate. I thought they had run a London review event, but with a bit of digging it looks more like a press event. My apologies.

Yeah, I've had my PC connected to the TV for months, but will be taking it back upstairs when the PS4 arrives. The thought of swapping discs fills me with dread. I'm even paying hilariously inflated Wii U eshop prices to avoid doing it!

Try using Steam for ten years day-in day-out, and STILL being forced to do disc auth on a "next gen" system :(

But you're not forced are you? You can either buy a physical disc or a digital download, with all the advantages and disadvantages that each method offers?

Think setting up a US account is the way to go for reasonably priced digital downloads.

$59.99 for Battlefield 4 WILL get translated to £59.99 on the UK store.

I'm assuming creating a noddy free PSN US account for purchasing is the way to go and then using my UK PS+ to play it all online etc etc. Just wondering if there's any downside to it?

If I wanted to create a us account to buy cheaper games I would have to be logged on to that account to play then right? So it would mean switching between the two depending on what you wanted to play?

No, you could use them on your regular profile

That's right. But you do have to be signed into the correct login to play your PS Plus content.

I have 2 profiles, an EU one if, for example, I want to play EU retail discs online. If a game has an online pass, it has to be redeemed on an account for that region. But switching them on a PS3 takes seconds, so it's not a big deal. Simply sign the other account in, go to account settings, activate/deactivate, activate Game content, done.

It looks as if it's even simpler on PS4 too, as there are less steps. :)

Then just buy PSN credit from Amazon.com like this. Or from PC Game Supply, or Ebay. Generally the codes are emailed instantly too. Any q's, pop me a PM!

Hopefully Amazon's prices for their PS4 digital store will be cheaper too.

You won't be able to play a US PSN purchased copy of Battlefield 4 on an EU PSN account, unless you have PS Plus on both accounts. This is the only downside with Sony forcing us to need to buy Plus for Online gaming access now, it didn't matter on the PS3.

Personally, I'm going to have my US PSN account as my PS Plus enabled Online account and have my EU as the offline, single player, non-PS Plus retail/rented game account.

Yeah, I said I'm getting digital instead. It's silly that you don't have the option to tie a game to your account and void the disc somehow. I still think discs are on the way out pretty quickly this gen. Fewer games will arrive via physical media and people will continue to get more comfortable with buying digitally (and capable, as broadband speeds creep up) just as was the case CDs and so on.

This topic has been done to death but since it keeps cropping back up.

I personally can't wait for the digital future where every game is £60 and i can't sell games that i don't like, sounds great. ;)
