PlayStation 4 Console Thread

Bloody hell, what on earth is wrong with people? So many people with (presumably) a love of games becoming incredibly myopic in the frenzy of the new console launches.

Indeed, I totally want both. But I don't trust MS after all the 180s and I'm betting on a price cut and kinect dump inside 12 months. So PS4 first it is and I shall pick my moment for a Bone.

I was getting both the PS4 and the One but cancelled the PS4 a few weeks ago as there are zero games I'm interested in anytime soon. Unlike the Xbox which has a couple of decent looking games for next week...

I'll pick up the PS4in time for Second Son and Destiny though.

I also like a Mario game very much.

I can't choose a side. Happily.

Lol at the Nintendo defence force. The Wii U is another Dreamcast, so sod off and let us folk who are getting a real next-gen console talk about the games, the faults, the controversies, the comparisons between PS4 and Xbone versions etc. You go back to playing Mario and Zelda.

Well, congratulations on managing to annoy both the Dreamcast fans who don't want their console to be tarred with the same brush as the Wii U, and Wii U owners who don't want their console to be tarred with the same brush as the Dreamcast. Win-win!

(Though, for what it's worth, I wish the Wii U were another Dreamcast. Another console with the Dreamcast's density of brilliant releases? I'd buy it in a shot!)

Well, the Wii U version of AC4 seems to be the best looking of the last gen versions and ME3 ran quite well (better than the PS3, close or equal to the 360 IIRC). Having said that I do think it's quite amusing seeing the Nintendo club swooping in here now the PS4 has launched going on about how everyone should cancel the preorders and buy a Wii U instead.

Woo, it's here! Took about 10 minutes to download and install 1,50. So at least that part of PSN is up and running smoothly.

First impressions:

  • Small
  • Pad is superb
  • Super fast UI
  • UI not as good as I hoped - (I actually kinda like the Bone's UI except for the ads)
  • Excited to start playing BF4!!!!

:D

  • Unable to sign in to PSN False alarm

I think the question is quite simple if you don't have a Xbox One, PS4 or Wii U and £450 in your pocket what should you buy?

If you are someone who buys for the future, i.e. wants to be in day 1 and already has an eye on a specific franchise the decision is easy.

I know people buying an Xbox One for Titanfall, I know people buying a PS4 for the next Naughty Dog game. If you are this way inclined all power to you, grats on being day one, grats on having the patience to wait for the great games to arrive.

If though you want gratification in the next 3 months the decision becomes harder.

1. £450 get you and Xbox One and Forza

2. £450 gets you a PS4, Killzone and one more titles lets say either Need for Speed or Assasins Creed 4 depending on your preference.

3. £450 get you a Wii U, NSMB U + Lugi U + Super Mario World 3D + A 3DS + Zelda! You can get two bloody machines and two games both getting 9's or 10 review scores.

Personally if I was walking into a store this Christmas my decision would be quite easy. Luckily/Unluckliy I went day 1 on a Wii U last year and have had to wait really a year for the games I really wanted to justify my decision. I did the bloody same with my 360 and 3DS!

This time I'm trying to be sensible I want a PS4 and and Xbox One and know in the next 18 months I will own both. But neither can for me at the moment justify a £450 lay out to play the current games.

So instead I'm buying a new guitar, when that must have game comes out I'll drop £450 to play it like I did with Halo back in the day. Right now the only game that makes me want a machine and justifies its purchase is the new SMW 3D. Its an odd place to be to be sure :-)

In short whatever you buy you will have a great time over the next 3 months :-)

 Jesus, Kapitan Chuck.

The real next gen, with all its exciting talk of hardware failure rates, pixel-counting competitions, delivery status updates and 'how long is it until that good game's out again?' discussions! As opposed to stoopid baby Mario games and all that weird, niche, badly-selling Japanese stuff (unless it's Last Guardian, in which case bring it on! (in a few years' time)). That's the kind of man's talk we want round here!

PS The Dreamcast was a fucking monster, you daft blart. I'd love it if we got another one of those with games of comparable quality and imagination. Go round the back and have a word with yourself.

I'm getting a PS4 but I can still admit that the WiiU has great games and is now amazing value.

Haha that sounds like "I'm a guy but I'm still able to say if another man is good looking or not".

Jesus people, we're not Gamefaqs. (not having a go at you btw, just an observation)

A word of caution.

http://kotaku.com/ps4-blue-light-of-death-has-no-clear-fix-yet-1465979487

A number of PlayStation 4 owners appear to have non-functional units that all suffer the same problem, a so-called blue light—or blue pulse—of death. We can't tell how many and assume it's a small but noteworthy minority.

The problem is being cited in scathing Amazon reviews, a trickle of Twitter complaints and a stack of videos on YouTube—as well as in more than a dozen e-mails and Tweets received by Kotaku since the console's launch on Friday. P

Sony hasn't offered any official comment to Kotaku on the matter, but a representative on the official PS4 support forums did post a lengthy set of step-by-step troubleshooting tips today. That post, on a thread entitled "[iNFO] Blinking Blue Light PS4 Issues," doesn't offer any surefire fix. P

From what I've heard, those with this issue have found that the best solution still involves sending the unit back—either directly to Sony or to the retailer who sold it to them, if an exchange is available.P

The problem that these PS4 users are facing is frustratingly simple. When a PS4 is working and is turned on with a press of the power button, the light that runs along the side of the console should first pulse blue and then switch to white. As it does, the console should send a signal to the TV it is hooked up to. Those who have the "blue light/pulse of death" are instead finding that their PS4 pulses blue, never goes to white and never sends a signal to their TV. I first heard about this problem on Wednesday from a Redditor going by the name Arogon. He'd won his PS4 in a Taco Bell contest and received it prior to launch.

Standard launch blues. Fingers crossed it's not as bad as the red ring of death.

I agree with nearly all your points.

Only thing to add is that whilst I do think those who don't have a Wii U should certainly look at getting one as there are some great games on and appearing for it, they are very different propositions.

I see Nintendos machine as a place for Nintendo games. If you want more than that, and most of us do then you have to have another machine. As we know these consoles are unlikely to drop in price in the next 18 months then buying one now or buying one next year makes little difference. Except that you get the excitement of playing with the tech you are going to be playing on for the next 7 years. If that does nothing for you then you're much better off playing Mario for the next few months.

I sincerely believe that the Wii U will be left behind by the game development community once they're used to producing on the significantly advanced hardware found in the PS4 and Xbone. It just won't be cost effective.

I think in honesty most Wii U owners agree but are quite happy that they will continue to be able to play brilliant first party titles on them for years to come.

But clearly in many cases another machine would be likely needed to fill the gaps. Either way, if you like Nintendo games then you need one in your life.

In other news, Shopto charged me for my PS4 last night. Not sure how I feel about this - I was expecting an email in advance detailing when this would happen (like I got for the Xbox One order that I subsequently cancelled).

I was hoping to see how things panned out this week before committing any cash. Certainly these failure stories are a concern and in truth I could easily wait a few weeks/months before picking one up, save for the excitement of being part of launch weekend.

Cross those fingers harder. Some had their machines bricked completely, apparently.

I thought we weren't scaremongering on here any more! That report isn't about a new thing it's just reporting on the known issues that are affecting a small number of machines (relative to the total sold).

Sony will be riding the storm, seeing if the press get bored of reporting it when the vocal minority quieten down. If they start wading in with press releases and statements now then they will merely be fanning the flames and givingnnnnmmnnnnnnnn the websites more to write about.

This gen is the first since the snes days where I won't own every console. This is as a result of two things, really: having a 6 month old baby and lack of time. I haven't turned my 360 on in well over a year, I don't even know where my Wii is but it's been at least 4 years since that went on and my ps3 is mostly a Netflix and bluray machine. I've also pretty much regretted all of the Nintendo consoles I've owned since n64 as although they had some great games, none of them ever really realised their full potential. I'll never buy another Nintendo console again as a result.

Anyway, if I get a console at all this gen, it'll be in about 18 months time and it'll be a ps4. The benefit of this is all of these issues will be resolved and I'll have pick of a load of great games for much cheaper and perhaps even the console itself will be discounted. I did this with the ps3 and it was an amazing few months of cheap gaming for me.

Cheers for the heads up. Found an email just now saying they had attempted to charge my card and it had failed. This is because I have an old card registered with them and planned to use paypal. But figured I'd get a warning email first that they were going to take payment early. They failed to give me a heads up with the Xbox One payment as well. Their handling of this has been really shoddy in my opinion.

To be honest I'm regretting using Shopto for the whole next gen launch. For the first time I dont feel like their prices are as competetive as others and things like not sending me an email to let me know they will soon be charging my account with £400 is a bit shit.

Im assuming I can still cancel after they have charged my card but pre-launch? I'm sort of swaying towards trying to pick on up in a shop between now and Xmas, seeing as I wont even be at home over the launch weekend to play the thing!

I've been disappointed in Shopto for the first time as well. I've ended up cancelling essentially everything I've ordered with them and moved it to other places. The Mega Pack pricing is the most expensive I've seen it anywhere and I just don't get the pre-charging thing.

They want to make sure you can't cancel at the last minute.

Hmmm. DPD deliver between 9 and 6pm. I've got to pick the kids up at about half four. If they clash I'm going to have a very difficult decision on my hands. I mean, I'm fairly fond of them and everything but they could fend for themselves for a couple of hours, right?

Cancelling last minute is pretty shit as well I guess.

Anyway, LESS THAN TWO WEEKS TO GO!!!

I'm sure a little hitchhiking now and again will do them good.
