PlayStation 4 Console Thread

Yeah, it's the Xbox 360 all over again - it's just how console launches go! You have the first-party FPS that looks better than anything else at launch (PD0/Killzone), the naff 3D platformer (Kameo/Knack), the slightly rushed racing game (PGR3 - although Driveclub has thankfully been delayed), a bunch of EA sports games with more shinies, a current-gen NFS with more shinies (Most Wanted/Rivals), and loads of current-gen games with better graphics/framerates/resolutions.

But fuck, it's still exciting :)

Uhm no, that is not true. PD0 was by far the ugliest of the 360 launch titles, I remember laughing at the shoddy graphics with my friends after picking up our new 360s at a midnight launch. CoD2 and Condemned looked waaaaaay better, never mind that they were also better games full stop. Especially Condemned, it's the only 360 launch game I would ever want to play again - it's awesome. PD0 was fucking awful in every way, it's telling that the only achievement I ever got on that game was for finishing the campaign in co-op during that very same launch night. I never wanted to touch PD0 again after that, and this was way back when trying to get all the achievements in every game was still interesting and fun.

Condemned is still one of the best games on the 360, great way to kick the 360s life off back then. Plus there was COD2 which was great as well.

It is. I played through Condemned again recently and despite looking hideous in places (especially the character models) it still bludgeons you senseless, in the best possible way of course.

Killzone really is a must have for me. I even loved the first game with its tense shootouts and slow crawl. But I don't imagine we'll unearth a gem like Condemned during the launch.

Oh man, Condemned! I remember playing that on the projector in a blacked out room with my sound system cranked up. Never again. Sod that!

Those two are my launch memories too.

... and this. Projector + Condemned :omg:

Looks like NBA 2K14 is getting some high praise over on 'Gaf, meant to play great but look amazing. Also nice to see NFS getting pretty universal praise. Launch titles am get!

That Giantbomb stream left me pretty unimpressed - there were all these weird UI things with the patching and loading, and the sheer number of old games has to be unique for any gen. I don't mean "games released across both", I mean actual old games - a bunch of F2P things you could have been playing for the last year or two, that mediocre fighting game and up-ports of PSN titles that released years ago.

If Driveclub or Watch_Dogs had made it, it would have looked better, but it is incredibly sparse.

Yeah, if Driveclub and Watch Dogs were in there as promised it would have been one hell of a launch I'm sure. A real shame.

But when they do get released the console won't be any cheaper (especially if you've ordered the sexy bundle), so I'm still in for launch.

Contrast, Resogun, Flower, Need for Speed Rivals and Lego Marvel sitting and waiting in my download queue for my PS4 to arrive. I was tempted to shove all the F2P games in there as well, just because ...

How have you managed to do that? I can't find anywhere to queue them on the SEN website.

500 posts since yesterday's launch about faults. Quite a lot of overheating units... ing

Same thing over at the Amazon.com forums http://www.amazon.com/PlayStation-4-Launch-Edition/product-reviews/B00BGA9WK2/ref=cm_cr_pr_top_link_21?ie=UTF8&filterBy=addOneStar&pageNumber=21&showViewpoints=0&sortBy=bySubmissionDateDescending even if you just count the Amazon Verified Purchase reviews to dismiss trolling there is still a hell of a lot of people receiving faulty units :(

I'm giving some thought to cancelling my pre-order, thinking about it there isn't anything at launch that I *must* have so bad that I'd be willing to take a risk at getting a dodgy unit and have it repaired/refunded. I'm not going to rush in to clicking the cancel button, I'm going to see how this pans out over the next week, see what Sony's response is.

It seems like the most common issue is a slightly out of whack hdmi socket. It also seems like this is reasonably easy to sort out. No idea myself but that's what I've heard.

Now, whilst it's still terrible that this should happen, if it is the main issue it would seem like something most of us could probably work around. The average consumer probably not. That could be why there are so many complaints and reports of issues. I'm not saying they're not valid, just that it might be the sort of thing a more clued up tech minded forum goer might a) have heard about and b) be able to fix themselves relatively easily.

Not trying to make excuses or suggest it's not an issue, just saying that it's worth following in case you should be unlucky. There might be a simple solution that most people wouldn't know about.

When you pay £350 for anything you expect it to be in fully working order and it should definitely not be something "you could work around"

I'm as much of a Sony zealot as the next man, but even I'd be miffed at having to bend pins into place on a brand new piece of kit that cost £350.

I can understand there being a small percentage of DOA hardware for any launch, but the more that the US PS4 launch goes on, the more I can't help but feel it's been completely rushed.

Hardware issues might be completely exaggerated, but it'll be interesting to see how these machines hold up in the long term.

The UI seems sparse, and patching and trophy syncing seems so last gen. I must admit that MS seem to have a better UI this time round and I can understand the reasons for making the One so large. I'd rather sacrifice some space under the TV for a cooler, quieter console.

Saying that, I can't wait to play Killzone and Resogun. Shame about the Driveclub delay though...

Bent pins on HDMI is farcical - its a robot built part and i have never heard of it before and i have always been anti HDMI - these days its not bad but us early HD adopters had years of grief with it!

The other issue being that it means none of the machines are tested, you physically cant put a HDMI lead in wrong even with a little force unlike USB for example so they leave the factory untested and for some reason damaged - very odd situation to be in. However reading the links it would appear many are having overheat issues not related to the HDMI issue, its been measured to run hot anyway so its not a good sign :(

Not sure it would put me off getting one, had loads of issues with PS3 and while thats not good Sony were pretty good at resolving to be fair to them.

The issues haven't put me off. My pre-order is still ready and waiting forAmazon to ship for the 29th.

The US launch has dulled my enthusiasm slightly though, with some low reviews for games, allegedly dodgy hardware, and what many consider to be an unfinished interface (no media playing facilities at all. Seriously?)

That aside, I'm committed, and have the day off work booked for it. I'm such a sucker for shiny new things!
