PlayStation 4 Console Thread

Just created a PSN account in readiness for the launch. Had a couple of wobbles when the first reviews came out but I think Killzone for the shinies plus Need for Speed will give me plenty to mess around with (alongside Resogun of course). I can then pick up BF4 as a Xmas present from someone.

As somebody that has literally spent no more than 5 minutes on a PS3 I'm excited to see what Sony have in store for the PS4 :)

Just been having a voice/text conversation with a guy who was streaming his BF4 game live. I was on text through ustream and he was presumably using his headset. Crazy days.

Anyway, I didn't get his a/s/l or credit card deets. Disappointed.

XOne. Could we call it that? That's brief, feels suitably politically correct, won't offend delicate forum sensibilities or cause an affronted Kinect to delete your saved games.

Pronounced like "zone" I'm sure it's what MS assumed it'd be referred to as.

Well this isn't quite the experience I was expecting...

- Can't create an account to access PSN store because servers are fucked (Been trying for 2 hours) So no cool games to play.

- Put in Battlefield4. Played multiplayer and was amazed and how last gen it looks.

- Played single player which was slightly better graphically, I think if someone told me it was actually running on a PS3 I wouldn't be like 'No way!!!?' I just checked the original gameplay teaser video and they have certainly lost something in the transition. PC version seems to be more subtle and have better lighting. It could just be that video was touched up too.

- Game cancelled after 10 mins due to error, back to dashboard

1.5 out of 10

I just noticed... on the all access event video, if you go to about 1hr 10mins there's an interview with the first guy in line for a PS4. And right behind him is a guy who clearly works in the Microsoft store, he's got a Surface hoodie on

Imagine that...a world where people don't have blind loyalty to one brand!

So, PS4 and Bone until someone comes up with a better option.

Xone, if you want to take being childish out of it whilst still typing as little as humanly possible I guess. I'm leaning* more to the PS4 than that, but I've never been comfortable with the whole "bone" thing to be honest. It's just stupid and unnecessary, even if it does turn out to be shit. Which it won't anyway, it'll just be slightly less good if that's how things pan out.

* Virtually collapsing on it to be honest, which is certainly something I didn't think I'd be saying even a year ago. But Last of Us sold me a PS3, and as a result PS+ (there were a few good exclusives on it that month), and as a result a Vita and I've been impressed with all. Remote play from PS3 is unfortunately fairly poor, the resolution is awful and near bugger all supports it but to be honest looking at the PS4 footage that alone could sell me it.

Wobble fix

Whoa, the Wii U is bigger than I thought it was. And I don't like the PS4 angularity or the sloped design, it does look good in some pics but awful in others. Yeah, it's different but it still looks like a sci-fi prop from Blake's 7.

Not quite sure why I'm expecting the PS4 to be amazing right now. It won't be amazing until 2015.

Being able to log in and play a game for as long as you like might be nice right there and now though you'd have thought.

Actually played some games tonight.

Resogun - Quite enjoyable for about 30mins. Takes a few goes to understand what the hell is happening but once you do it's a solid and well designed little game. Doesn't especially feel next gen though I did enjoy voices coming out of the controller. (Sounds better than the wiimote). I'm sure I'll never be playing this again in a month or so though.

Contrast - Oh my word! Haha. It's a neat idea but it's SOOOOOO rough around the edges. It controls like a PSOne game with your character running around 1000mph whilst the camera continually gets confused. So many rough edges, even the loading icon is WTF. The animation is hideous. Voice acting painful. Got bored senseless after 15mins.

Disappointed that there are no demos. Not quite sure what to play next. It's quite funny, this really has that start of a generation feel to it. I almost want to just stick on that CD of a Trex to make me feel my purchase is justified, something to get me excited for the future. Even tempted to buy/download Killzone just to see what my PS4 can do even though I know that it's essentially what the first Resistance game was to the PS3. Just a game that clearly started as a previous gen game but then was forced into the launch of the new gen with the new features dialed up to 10 when really it's just not needed. So for PS3 and Xbox360 it was all about the normal and spec abilities and so everything was super bumpy and shiny just for the sake of it then after a few years devs dialed it down and only used it where it made sense and added more depth to those techniques.

This generation it's certainly almost all about lighting and particle fx so you have games like Resogun that shouts 'Look at this particle fx we can do now!! This is next gen!!'. Also you have it in Battlefield4 where suddenly there are millions of fragments of dust floating near a window just for the sake of it looking next gen. I assure you in years to come they will tone down the dust and just make it look more real and animated/interact more realistically. But for now, boom! zillions of particles everywhere! It's really the new 'Shiny walls!' syndrome the PS3/Xbox360 gen suffered from in it's first year.

It's a completely natural cycle that will always repeat. Devs just learn from each other by studying how they each handle these new possibilities. I suppose the point of my random ramblings are just to highlight the return of that certain deja vu from starting a new generation. Instead of being frustrated by it perhaps it's better just to marvel and rekindle these times.
