PlayStation 4 Console Thread

While it is a small sampling it is still slightly worrying that before the machine is even properly out in the wild both Kotaku and IGN received PS4s with duff HDMI ports leading to the WLOD as well as at least 4 NeoGAF posters who won one early through Taco Bell and apparently Redditors who got one as a result of the same promotion.

Yes this is my main concern at the moment & I am glad we are getting it 2 weeks later in the UK.

Hoping these are just isolated incidents.

All they needed to do was put an few extra feet pads on the right hand side of the console. Looking at videos & screenshots is one thing but until we get it in our hands to test ourselves we won't know how bad it is.

Didn't you say a friend just got diagnosed with cancer? And you're crying over a console "wobbling" if you go over and apply pressure to one corner?

Fuck me, you of all people should have some perspective.

The firmware update link in case anyone wishes to download it to USB. (Maybe we need to pin this to the 1st post?)

It's not like we'll have revised hardware if this turns out to be an endemic issue (which it surely won't be, as dodgy HDMI ports would be an obvious thing to pick up in testing). Our consoles were manufactured weeks ago and are sitting in warehouses. The only advantage we have is if firmware 1.50 starts bricking consoles.

I'm not sure I've used WOW HD before, anyone know if they're any good with delivery and the like?

So this is how they've keep the costs down - cutting corners in manufacturing.

And leaving a foot out.

It's not good news though - there's very few retail units in the wild at the moment, and there's multiple reports of them dying. One of IGN or Kotaku could be marked as a one off, but both?

Eurogamer, Polygon, GiantBomb, etc, etc If they all start to break, then fair enough.

Do we know what batch of consoles these are? Are they ones done very early so as to have them ready for promotions, events, etc and are they maybe separate from a batch of retails units? Are the EU units a different batch to the NA units?

Just need to wait and see.

I'll be gutted if mine is faulty when I get it, purely due to the timing and having to explain to a 7 year old that his birthday present (which is already being given to him two weeks late) will not be here for a while longer whilst it gets fixed. That'll be the most annoying thing.

I suppose in the next week we'll find out what the percentage of failures is and whether or not it is the usual tech failure rate, or more of an issue such as RROD.

On the contrary, the ones out there might've been the earliest produced hence the ones most likely to suffer any potential hardware defects.

I've not used them in something like 5 years but I always remember them never delivering things quickly so I'd be hesitant to use them for anything you want for launch day. Not sure what they're like now though.

The Giantbomb unboxing showed the batch number but I went to watch it and grab a screen dump and it's been removed for viewing in the UK WTF !!

Cheers (EDIT:+ Wonderfalls too). I'll take the hit of a few quid in that case and use the Amazon Prime trial to play double safe.
