PlayStation 4 Console Thread

I think the white light error is related to the day one firmware update, best get that update downloaded to USB.

The wobble is a really bad design flaw by Sony & I'm surprised that it did not get noticed in any of their testing.

Yeah IGN had an issue with the white light

http://uk.ign.com/articles/2013/11/14/broken-playstation-4-systems

Meanwhile, IGN experienced the same issue, but it happened after the console was already working. It may not have contributed to the issue, but ours stopped working the morning after we updated to version 1.50. You can find more details in the original post below. Furthermore, IGN had tried a wide variety of methods to correct the issue: new HDMI cables, new inputs, new TV, putting a disc into the system, connecting it to and from the Internet, and, of course, holding down the power button during boot-up for seven seconds to try to reset things. Nothing worked. Oddly enough, we tried adding light pressure to the top of console and it briefly flickered a few active home menu images on the television.

Adding pressure to the console fixed it briefly? That sounds more like a hardware manufacture issue. I really hope that isn't the case and if it is then it's limited to a small batch.

That doesn't sound good, I agree. But whatever inspired IGN to try adding pressure to the top of the console? Did they also twat the side of it, like the Fonz?

Yep, myself and a few others had Wii U's that we're DOA but there's hardly been an epidemic of them suddenly dieing. At the moment it's such a low sample that although we should be cautious, it's not necessarily a serious issue affecting all machines.

Concern is perfectly understandable, but making the jump to it being RROD level is a bit much based on what we know so far.

A "really bad design flaw"? Can you quantify that? This reaction is pretty hilarious.

The hardware failure sounds like the HDMI out is separating from the GPU if a bit of physical pressurnis fixing it.

Ruh roh!

So what was the MEGATON news?

It was that the value of a ton, with respect to news, has now been redefined to fifty nine point three milligrams. Announcements like "the PS4 comes with a mains plug" now qualify as MEGATON. "The PS4 can be connected to the Internet" is GIGATON. Will all news consumers please report for immediate reeducation.

I don't think that leaning on a console in a bunch of different ways is a normal part of testing of a console.

All they needed to do was put an few extra feet pads on the right hand side of the console. Looking at videos & screenshots is one thing but until we get it in our hands to test ourselves we won't know how bad it is.

The white light issue is a big concern & will be following this issue over the next week.

So what exactly is the issue with this wobble? If it's sitting on three feet in a tripod fashion then surely it's perfectly stable when laid flat and only shows itself if you purposefully push down on either corner? And why would anyone ever do that?

In other news, it's being reported that the PS4 will stop working if you hit it extremely hard with a sledgehammer over and over.

I've been reading up and it seems that iPhone-compatible headsets and most other headsets (like the PS4) only differ in where the mic/ground pins are connected, so you can get adaptors. Anyone with a pair of nice headphones that also have an iPhone mic (like me) should be able to get them working with PS4 and Vita for a couple of quid.

Edit - C-c-c-c-context breaker.

Fucking hell. Look at the thing stood on its side. It would clearly look a bit crap with more feet at the top end, so they decided the ones 2/3 of the way up would be enough so that it still looks nice on both sides in that orientation, because like what sort of idiot is going to stand there pressing down on the corner of their new machine all day anyway, it's still stable after all. Cue idiots pressing down on the corner of the machine and moaning about it.

While it is a small sampling it is still slightly worrying that before the machine is even properly out in the wild both Kotaku and IGN received PS4s with duff HDMI ports leading to the WLOD as well as at least 4 NeoGAF posters who won one early through Taco Bell (and apparently also bunch of Redditors who got one as a result of the same promotion).

I have to admit I have not thought about standing it on it's side because that won't apply to me. From experience I know how many times the kids in the house have been charging around & knocked into the tv unit. Which has caused the console or blu-ray player to move or skip whatever is playing. I would like to avoid any risk of any disk damage or console issue to my new £400 shiny. So anything to stop the movement of the console would be good for me.

Exactly, I don't see what the problem is.

In fact, there's always a chance it was done to stop people putting stuff on top of the machine. I mean let's face it, it isn't an oversight, it was obviously designed to be the way it is.
