PlayStation 4 Console Thread

Their hardware hasn't exactly helped either, personally i think they blew it.

I was hoping for an xbox that was powerful and added to the great experience i've had on the 360 but c'est la vie.

Maybe next time.

See, I don't get the "raw power" argument. The PS3 was a more powerful than 360. That maybe didn't show with third-party games as much, because of the different architecture last time round. But it was definitely borne out when you look at each console's biggest exclusives. Uncharted 2, MGS4, Beyond, The Last of Us and Gran Turismo all look significantly better than the best-looking 360 games. None of which stopped the 360 being by far my favourite console of the generation - largely because of Xbox Live and the 360 pad making it the console of choice for third-party releases.

I guess the pad is an equaliser this time around for Sony. But I'm yet to be convinced they understand online in the same way as MS. And from the Polygon review, the usability of the PS4 dash still looks offputting to me. Far too many hidden menus as a hangover from the XMB. Whereas on the other hand the Xbone looks like such a slick, simple, inviting interface. And that's without factoring in just speaking to the console.

All of that said, for me the question really is this: does some slightly better performance on early third-party games mean more to me than usability and online implementation? I'm not sure. And when I look at the games lineups, there's no obvious system-seller on either machine (I was hoping Killzone could sway me, but the scores and comments have been underwhelming).

So yeah, basically I'm still a bit on the fence about both consoles, but leaning more to the Xbone side based on usability, online, and recent history.

Be interesting to see what the numbers are, as with all tech there will be SOME failures. Thing we have now though, is due to the internet, the stories will spread instantly and could be blown out of proportion.

If it is something on a par with the RROD, then how Sony handle this is vital.

Significantly better?

I'd argue the Halo 4 is probably the best looking current-gen console game I've ever seen.

But that'd be a bit subjective now, wouldn't it?

Significantly better? I don't think that's accurate at all. Gears of War Judgement,Halo 4 and Forza Horizon are ridiculous swan songs that lead me to believe someone sold their souls to get games that good looking on the platform. Gears in particular just has such a great combination of art and tech that put it up there with the best lookin games of the Gen.

Oh man, now reports of white light of death on NeoGAF and Reddit.

I'm actually kind of glad we get it a fortnight later, if there are horror stories at launch at least we'll get to hear about them before forking over cash.

Anything is going to get reported and blown out of all proportion remember.

We won't know if there is any substantial return rate before the UK launch.

hehe. True.

Man the XBone crowd must be sitting back and thinking "How d'ya like dem apples"

If the Xbone crowd are getting excited by the PS4 failings, then they're just setting themselves up for a fall. It's a console launch, there are always going to be teething problems on the hardware side and the software side. I expect to see just as many issues when it comes to the Xbone launch, and some similarly rubbish reviews, followed by a similar "we're getting great reviews" response.

There are loads of positives here. The PS4 UI seems to be pretty quick, task switching is a lovely addition, Twitch streaming seems to be working pretty well too, everybody is pleased with the controller (I'll put the dodgy stick material down to it being the first batch) and the wobble isn't really a major issue. But, my stance on the PS4 still hasn't changed. It seems to be a great bit of kit, but at the moment there aren't any games that really grab me. There's nothing that I'm really looking forward to getting my hands on. But I'm sure those games will come with time. I'll probably start getting the PS4 itch when MLB the Show comes out on it next year.

The only thing I'm annoyed at is that I'm getting both, so I can't join in on the bickering anymore. :(

The good thing I'm happy about is that I'm getting both, so I can join in the fanboyism and playing Forza, Killzone, Resogun and maybe DR3 this month :)

If the Xbone crowd are getting excited by the PS4 failings,

No I was more on about the "things getting blown out of proportion" thing. There's been plenty to have a go at MS with (DRM, always online etc) but some of the shit people have harped on about has been mental. We're seeing some of that now on PS4. Th PS4 wobble really won't be much of an issue but I'm sure that there's going to be a few people sitting there thinking "yup, this is the shit the Xboners had to put up with"

As an aside, my original fat PS3 just YLOD'd on me tonight. I've got a PS4 on pre-order so I hope that the PS3 BC through gakai isn't far off. I've got a shitload of PS3 games I want to play but I don't fancy buying another PS3 for them.

You're gonna be able to pick up a much newer PS3, poss. 2nd hand even cheaper, over X-mas with all the trade ins. I'd just plump for a nice slim (Not super slim). I doubt Gakai will launch soon otherwise we would have a date, and it will be surely only a limited selection at first.

I had to cancel my pre-order due to financial issues, so I'm slightly reassured that none of the launch games are screaming "YOU MUST OWN THIS" to me. Which is not to say I wouldn't have kept my pre-order if I could: as I've said before, there's plenty coming in the next year I badly want to play on next-gen and I don't think we'll see a price cut on the PS4 until 2015, so there's no reason to delay my purchase other than short-term financials. Still. 7/10s for Killzone make me feel vaguely better.

I think the white light error is related to the day one firmware update, best get that update downloaded to USB.

The wobble is a really bad design flaw by Sony & I'm surprised that it did not get noticed in any of their testing.

Mark Cerny has mentioned that Knack was made it a very short development cycle, and the way his efforts have been pulled in many directions, I suspect the project was more a proof-of-concept to other developers of what can be achieved with minimal time and resources. In fact, I'd go as far to say that although the Cerny Method can make good games, I suspect it will not always produce great games.

If Mark Cerny dedicated himself fully to a title I suspect it would be much better, but I get the feeling he probably isn't that interested to do so these days.

While probably true this sounds so apologetic, there's no need to protect uncle Cerny. He failed to make a good game and that's that.
