The PS2 had the worst launch line up ever and the games certainly did not look a generation better. The highlight launch title was Fantavision.

Haha, the review scores have been excellent for drama purposes. Poor Cerny and Knack- I reckon he gave it fuck all attention due to working on the hardware.

On the polygon thing, bias or not, they're a bunch of pretentious dickheads (Arthur Gies in particular obvs) so ignore everything they about everything. They had a roundtable discussion with Adam Sessler once and you could even see the frustration on his face when they poly guys were talking.

I miss the magazine hype fest. I've still got VHS tapes of various PS2 and Xbox pre-release stuff that got stuck on magazines around here somewhere...

This is going back about 15 years or so but my brother and I used to get a lot of our hype from Gamesmaster* magazine back when they were going on about Dural and M2. I remember one of their issues having some 30 minute VHS of random gameplay footage from upcoming titles, but in pre-broadband times (and probably before the internet was as accessible and affordable as it is now) we had little else. I miss the days of VHS freebies.

So, this Mark Cerny fellow, that everyone has been championing as the savior of gaming and who everyone is in unadulterated awe of for making the PS4 'for the players' is the same dude that's just put out Knack? An absolutely worthless pile of shite, if you're to believe the majority of reviews so far.

My question is, why is everybody so seemingly in love with his philosophy, if he can't even make a half decent game for the console he's been advising on? And, more importantly, why is everyone so eager to believe he's steered Sony towards creating the perfect console when he's stumbled at the first hurdle?

I'm genuinely curious, as I don't know his credentials beyond what I've briefly heard about him over the years, but he seemed to be championed like a god around here.

Just because Knack is garbage doesn't mean he's no good at hardware design, just as James Dyson makes an excellent vacuum but doesn't necessarily mean he'll do a good job cleaning your house.

The feature that stuck out for me was the PS4 being able to pump all audio to the pad, allowing you to just plug in a set a of cheap Sennheisers in for late night gaming if you have housemate/family trying to sleep.

That sounds pretty cool. Will deffo be using that.

Re. Jon's question on Cerny.

Because he was instrumental in creating a more powerful, more developer-friendly, less DRM heavy, and cheaper next-gen console than the "opposition". And during the last few years he's allegedly worked like a trojan to put all that in place. No idea whether he has the game design chops to cut it anymore, but he clearly never had the time to focus on Knack exclusively. Oh, and he's intelligent, articulate, informed and comes across as a very nice guy. Stick him next to a Mattrick or a Spencer (or some of the other over familiar faces from the last few months), and he is comparatively God-like.

Shame Knack is averaging 6/10 though, but hardly unmitigated shite. Just very average. So, what was expected then. Will still be playing it.

The PS3 (and PS2) were a bitch to program for. PS4 in contrast seems to be a game developers wet-dream by all accounts.
