PlayStation 4 Console Thread

Just like the PS4 games scores my thoughts are all over the place on whether to cancel my pre-order or not  I've read the reviews and I think back to how I hate the typical post launch lull, waiting for something, anything and even regretting buying the damn thing. BUT when that must have game does come along and I see people saying they'll have to buy the machine and the game, I admit to feeling a little smug that I got that cost out of the way months ago.

So that's the thing isn't it, I'm not rich but I'm not skint either, right now I can afford a PS4 with a little curbing of Xmas spending but that might not be the case when a game does come along that I really want, so do I keep my pre-order or not? Will I regret buying it once I go back to playing GTA Online? Damn I hate console launches, especially when they're so close to Xmas.

Have you read the EG review? It sounds pretty horrible. It's not really a platformer by the sounds of it, it's one of those games where you take ten steps, get locked in an arena with 47 enemies and then have to kill them all to progress, before walking ten steps and getting into another fight. It sounds really tiresome and apparently the combat isn't really up to it.

Obviously YMMV, but it's not what I thought it was, so I'd make sure you know what it is before spending silly money on it, even for the kid!

Nope, going by the videos I have seen. Walking around smashing shit up. The boy likes the look of it, so that is good enough for me. If we get it and it doesn't get enjoyed, we'll trade it in.

Have bought, played and traded stinkers before. Have also bought games that have been panned by the critics, but still enjoyed to some degree and other games that he loves that have been destroyed by the same critics.

Fair enough, as long as you know what you're getting into :)

So very glad I got a solus pack. I've never been a fan of the Killzone games. Just about started to get into Battlefield so it looks like the PS4 will be for that until more proper AAA titles come along. I'm more than willing to wait for the real gems to appear. Have a big backlog of PS3 games to buy/complete.

One things for sure. MS must be breathing a sigh of relief that the launch games haven't hit it out of the park. They've still got a decent chance to keep up.

Well, I'm glad of one thing. We can finally stop talking about resolutions and concentrate on whether the games are worth playing.

Aye, the one genuine standout launch that didn't rely on that that I can think of is the original Xbox, which launched with Halo in America (and then in every other territory). Spectacular launches are very rare, it's just that as European gamers that only started to really be an issue with the last generation.

The Super Famicom launched in Japan with SMW and F-Zero. Two all time classics with SMW having a good shout at being the best game of all time.

I'm a bit disappointed that Knack turned out to be cack (although I had my suspicions all along). I was hoping for something a bit more light-hearted to go along with the standard shooters and gritty realism but I'm not willing to take a £49 punt on getting some enjoyment out of it. I'm sure I'll pick it up down the line or when it turns up on PS+.

Looks like I'll have to make do with Killzone, NFS, Battlefield and Assassin's Creed (and Injustice if Argos doesn't cancel my order). Not a bad lineup really, especially when you add in the PS Plus stuff on top.

Well excellent. I don't suppose we're meant to know what it is or when this "Shocking announcement" will be?

My guess is the release date of MGS5, and maybe some sort of exclusivity period and/or exclusive DLC.

(covering pretty much all bases there, I know.)

I won't argue with F-Zero, at least. So that's two great launches!

Can't get along with the Lego games at all really, and I've tried! I'll probably just buy Mario 3D World and pretend I'm playing it on the PS4 instead.

Lego City Undercover (WiiU only) is one of the best games I have played this year so I have high hopes for Lego Marvels & The Lego Movie (assuming there will be a game tie-in)

Sounds from the eurogamer review like KZ has suffered from being a launch game. The open ended gameplay that made the single player look interesting is confined to a few levels then it turns into a corridor shooter with predictable set pieces. I'm also worried about the crappy sounding platforming sections.

Still looking forward to it just for the nextgen graphics, but it's obviously not a classic. I think some reviewers are being a bit too cool for school about it though.

I'm still excited. Currently have KZ, ACIV, NFS and Lego Marvel preordered. Cannot wait to play Resogun. The 60fps footage from Giant Bomb looked lovely. I'll also be downloading DC Universe Online (Hopefully in the background). Always did have a soft spot for that game.

Oh, leave off. You'd have nowt to say if the scores were incredible.

That's what is most depressing out of all this, we've turned into a bunch of whiny fanboys or GAF if you will. Just because the scores for the exclusive games aren't all that we're throwing around accusations of bias and money hats. Not everyone is part of this little posse but you know who you are and it's pretty pathetic.

Anyone considering switching to Xbox or maybe a Wii U? I mean that new Mario looks and plays incredible and is out the same day. You'd save money and probably have the best game of the year.

I bought a 360 on day one with Perfect Dark Zero, Condemned and Kameo way back in 2005. I've waited long enough for a new generation to arrive, after 8 (!) years I'm totally ready for a shiny new powerful console. And with Killzone, AC4, resogun and whatever else is free on PS+ on day one, it looks like I will have better and more games to play than with the 360 launch (never mind the Wii or PS3 launch  (I don't like Wii Sports at all btw)). Apart from Knack everything seems at the very least decent, and there's every chance of one them being as much fun as Condemned which surprisingly ended up being my favourite launch game of the previous gen by far. No Halo or Mario 64 type 10/10 must-have, but both Sony and Microsoft still have another 8 (!) years to come up with one.

TL;DR - LAUNCH DAY AWAITS AND I EXCITE

I wonder when the review embargo for those games is up as Dead Rising seems to be the one that people might switch for despite some people in this thread trying their best to put it down.

I considered it a bit, because I find the Kinect stuff more interesting, and forza, then titanfall.

But the machine-crippled-by-720p is putting me off.
