PlayStation 4 Console Thread

Was there anything about the disc drive itself? I'm guessing it's another slot loading drive for aesthetic purposes, I'm wary of them as my fat PS3 tends to need a load of tickling and compliments to cough up a disc nowadays.

Yeah, I'm talking about the current 360, the existence of it there sparked this whole backlash off (so people said), so it's weird to see a collective shrug about the same thing on PS4.

Same with complaints about 360 Live and a shrug for mandatory PS+ for online.

Because the perceived (and real) value of PS+ is way beyond that of live. PS+ with Live like reliability for online play? I'd buy that for a dollar, or 40.

I have no idea how you get discs into it.

Nanomachines, son.

NOT ENOUGH POS-ES

Ah, I've had a closer look at it's on the left of the USB ports, under the Sony writing. Slot loader FTW:

Also, amazing how far off the mark this guess was, which is a pity, I kinda liked it:

Finally, the pack-in mono headset looks amazingly shit, though I suspect it should work with any wired or Bluetooth phone headset.

Yeah, it was mentioned that gaikai will be streaming PS3 games in 2014. I don't think there was a word on PS+ only or the first set of titles.

Dude, that sports bit was about 2 minutes. You should have held fast!

The PlayStation 4 will be released this holiday season for $399 in North America, and Sony Computer Entertainment detailed the contents of the hardware and the box in a press release this evening.

All PS4 consoles will feature a 500 GB hard drive, just like the Xbox One. Sony listed some of the device's hardware specifications when it announced the console in February, and went into further detail today after unveiling the design of the console itself.

According to Sony, the console's internal architecture was designed in such a way as to "keep the body as slim and light as possible." As you can see in the product photos below, the console appears to be split into four blocks, and the disc slot, power buttons, power indicator and vent sit between the four sections. The indicator light glows blue when the console is on; Sony's official name for the console's color is "Jet Black."

The PS4 includes two USB 3.0 ports on the front of the console. It weighs 2.8 kg (6.17 lbs) and measures 275 mm wide by 53 mm high by 305 mm long (10.83 inches by 2.08 inches by 12 inches). The ports available on the back are power, HDMI out, optical audio out, AUX (for the PlayStation Eye) and Ethernet — like the Xbox One, the PS4 does not support video outputs other than HDMI (such as component video).

The box comes with a console, one DualShock 4 controller, 1 mono headset in earbud form, a power cable, a USB cable and an HDMI cable. According to the press release's list of PS4 box contents, the PlayStation Eye camera is not included in the box; it will be sold separately for $59 in North America (£44 in the U.K. and €49 in Europe), and additional DualShock 4 controllers will also cost $59 each (£54 in the U.K. and €59 in Europe).

Ah, that streaming lark doesn't appeal to me much. Unless I've missed something about it, poor graphics and controller latency don't seem like a fun way to game.

Yeah, I'm blaming MS for my departure. I figured we'd have another 20 minute presentation about how EA's new ball-tek that lets you update live or some shit. Oh well.

The only genuine bad news I could take away from that conference is that PS+ will be required for PS4's online multiplayer.

It's unfortunate, but as Sony mentioned, Instant Game Collection has won over a lot of supporters, myself included. As long as IGC continues to be astounding, I won't even be thinking about the multiplayer functions when I'm forking over my £30-40 a year for my umpteen Vita and PS3 games to play during the duration, and I'm glad the cogs are in place for it to continue on the PS4. In addition, I wouldn't be surprised if this is a necessary evil in order to support feature set parity when it comes to multi-platform games, and to support dedicated services much like Demon's Souls' persistent matchmaking which could well be the norm for every title. That's speculation, mind.

Other than that? The pacing was worse than Microsoft's pitch, but that means absolutely nothing when the writing was made on the wall like that. A replaceable HDD and Region-Free games that was mentioned afterwards makes it even more enticing.

I'm not sure what you're driving at.
