PlayStation 4 Console Thread

Does that apply to all first party games or just the racers...?

720p60fps or 1080p30fps, similar juice required.

I think probably just racers. Other genres could probably get away with it. Except maybe FPS and beat 'em ups. Not saying them being 30fps would make them worse but it'll stick out to "hardcore" gamers and it's them that Sony want to impress.

Thread needs a buzz reel. Fourty games being shown across Vita, PS3 and some-fucking thing called PS4.

I've got this mental image of the Sony offices, since the Microsoft PR trainwreck, of people casually and confidently walking around, high-fiving each other in the corridor, grinning from ear to ear, Hawaiian shirt day every day, just totally hyped to get stuck in to E3. Feeling on top of the World.

if their DRM restrictions are just as bad - SONY may well be bricking trying to come up with a way of making it sound more palatable.

I think the restrictions on games is OK as long as it is for digital download only. mainly because my expectation of that is different.

tyagi - totally agree.

Do you think we will see more Bravado in the Sony presentation as a result? And will we see a more humble Microsoft?

Really looking forward to E3 more than ever now.

Humble Microsoft? Bit of an oxymoron wouldn't you say?

Hmmm... So nothing confirmed. Ok.

You CAN choose though - like the Vita, Sony are going to have everything on PSN and in stores at the same time. You can either buy one, or the other, and you get different benefits for each.

To be honest, I can see Sony towing the line of 'We've created the tools to allow DRM Restrictions, but it's up to the Publishers if they want to use them'. I recall that being the same angle they gave in regards to the PS3's Region Locking situation when the console was announced.

Unfortunately, I can see a lot of publishers vying for that sort of control, in comparison to the region locks where the only company that actually locked down each region was Atlus/Arc System Works' Persona 4 Arena. And, well, the rest is history if you read into that debacle in regards to the EU release.

VN1X - good point. But if Microsoft are still bullish after the recent backlash then it could quite possibly be a great modern example of the emperors new clothes.

Now that I think about it, it would be great if they were bullish - it would certainly result in plenty of new memes for us all. Of course, I do hope that Microsoft get their act together but if the rumours are in anyway true then they do deserve to have their wings clipped.

Fingers crossed that Sony (and their recent silence) doesn't indicate that they are planning on the same things either of course!

Personally I think charging for online play would be counter-productive, especially given the free-to-play push.

Charging for pretty much everything else I can understand to some degree — whatever Plus becomes, Gaikai, video sharing, etc — but putting basic online play behind a paywall would be idiotic and incongruous with the PS2, PSP, PS3 and Vita not requiring a fee.

I can handle 30fps* (would obviously prefer 60) but I want an out- of-car view when I'm racing.

I'd love them to make a PS4 version of this though:

That looks amazing. The first Motorstorm was one of only two racing games i've ever given a shit about - I find the heavy physics base of it made it into an interesting experience.

Is that all scripted? It would be utterly incredible if it was random.

Rumours from Neogaf are that PS4 is going to introduce a tiered service, 30 dollars a year for online, 60 for PS+ and 100 for Gaikal.

$100 a year seems a lot for streaming demos, but too little for all-you-can-eat games, so I'm sceptical of that bit.

Well then Sony have already failed that test :P

1080p30fps currently, the big flagship sim racers are already 60fps on current hardware so staying with 60fps for them was expected. FPS games are generally 30fps on consoles due to the processing requirements and the need to look as shiney as possible at the same time, unless you pull the low resolution trick and do perceptual 60fps like CoD or have John Carmack sweating his balls off to make it work, but even he had to resort to the dynamic frame buffer trick to keep it up.

I don't mind certain FPS games at 30fps. Depends on the type of gameplay the game has. My PC is pretty beefy so I love everything at 60fps regardless- but 30 fps is plenty playable for loads of genres.

Racers and fighting games always have to be 60fps in my eyes

Source please. :)

It's in the same NeoGAF thread.

Guy who posted about the tiered service:

----- thuway is stupid and speaks out of ignorance with old information. Everything I said has been shut down. I will edit the posts. Bird will shut up now.

Sony insider 1:

Basic online play is still free AFAIK.

Sony insider 2:

Does anyone know what the sound of 2500 jaws hitting the floor at the same time sounds like?

You soon will.

What the hell? I leave for 15 minutes and you brought the place down already, Bird?

A man, both wise and weathered, stood up in front of you all and said...

"Let nothing come between the platform and the joy of play"

I dunno what you're on about here? Have framerates been discussed on PS4? I know this generation hasn't been great at hitting 60fps at 1080p.

It doesn't handle like Burnout, that's why.

When you're playing Burnout and you're crushing the controller in your hands, knowing that one slight misstep means crash, and you get that buzz feeling because it's just so much fun

Then you crash and you realise you haven't blinked for two minutes, but it's a good crash, it's a fun crash and it doesn't get annoying

And you're off again, and you're crushing the controller and you're gritting your teeth and you realise that you're sitting on the edge of the chair again, and it's the near the end of the final lap

You cross the line, realise you haven't breathed for a while and you're pumped full of adrenaline

That's what I mean when I say 'It's like Burnout', not because of the bloody handling. And it feels like Burnout while the end of the world happens.
